  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that motivate nurses. Data were collected from 373 nurses employed at 4 general hospitals located in Seoul, Korea. Nine research instruments were used in the formulation of a questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 18.0. The mean score of motivation was 3.49. The major influential background factors for motivation among the hospital nurses were growth needs (${\beta}=0.31$, p<0.001), auto-suggesting strategies (${\beta}=0.20$, p<0.001), optimism (${\beta}=0.18$, p<0.001), problem solving and cognitive restructuring strategies (${\beta}=0.11$, p=0.035), extroversion (${\beta}=0.10$, p=0.027), and support-seeking strategies (${\beta}=0.09$, p=0.036). These factors accounted for 40% of the motivation for nurses. Identifying the major factors would therefore serve as predictors to motivate nurses, and we further discuss how these findings might benefit an employer.

  • This study aims at empirically analyzing the relation between employees' personality and their knowledge sharing intentions, on which enough light has not yet been shed in spite of its importance. By integrating the big five model of personality with social capital theory and social cognitive theory, this study develops six hypotheses concerning the relation and empirically tests them by using 724 samples collected from employees in practice. The empirical analysis results from this study reveal that employees' extroversion and agreeableness are positively associated with their social relations and that their openness to experience and conscientiousness are positively associated with their knowledge self-efficacy, which are positively related to their knowledge sharing intentions. Based on the new findings, theoretical and practical implications are provided for knowledge management researchers and managers in practice.

  • This study was designed (1) to examine the results of previous qualitative research on clothing-wearing motives by quantitative approach, (2) to explore the concept of clothing utility, utility-reduction and discard, and (3) to investigate the impact of clothing-wearing motives on consumer attitudes and consuming-behaviors. Date were collected by questionnaire from 443 collegiate students between August and September of 2000, and 396 questionnaires were analyzed. 3 groups were identified on the basis of clothing-wearing motives and named by extroversion group, introversion group, and least clothing-congnizing group respectively. This supported the qualitative results in part, especially in the direction of motives. Clothing utility-reduction factors were identified as appearance demage, social-psychological damage, and abandonment-causing damage. The 3 groups were responded on utility-reduction differently, thus clothing-wearing motive variable was determined as useful in fashion marketing.

  • In this paper, we studied facial impression construction with smartphones in a series of experiments with two smartphone applications: SmartRing and SystemSens+. In the first experiment, impressions of faces associated with different music genres (trot vs. classical) were compared to impressions formed from a facial image alone along the social warmth and intelligence dimensions. In the second experiment, the effect of similarity attraction was investigated by manipulating the extroversion of facial images. Results indicated that impressions of faces cannot only be constructed along the social warmth and intelligence dimensions, but can also be made more or less attractive based on their similarity to the viewer's personality. Our experiments provide interesting insights into facial impressions formed in a smartphone environment.
