In general, the problems of strengthening and repairing of deteriorated or damaged reinforced concrete members are usually worked out in situ by externally bounding steel plates using epoxy resins, which has been recognized to be one of effective and convenient methods. But the disadvantages of strengthening/repairing concrete members with externally bonded steel plates include ; (a) deterioration of the bond at the steel-concrete interface caused by the corrosion of steel ; (b) difficulty in manipulating the plate at the construction site ; (c) improper formation of joints, due to the limited delivery lengths of the steel plates ; and etc. Therefore these difficulties eventually have led to the concept of replacing the steel plates by fiber-reinforced composite sheets which are characterized by their light weight, extremely high stiffness, excellent fatigue properties, and outstanding corrosion resistance. In the paper, for the reliability assessment of reinforced concrete beams externally strengthened by carbon fiber plastic(CFRP) laminates, an attempt is made to suggest a limit state model based on the strain compatibility method and the concept of fracture mechanics. And the reliability of the proposed models is evaluated by using the AFOSM method. The load carrying capacity of the deteriorated and/or damaged RC beams is considerably increased. Thus, it may be stated that the post-strengthening of concrete beams with externally bonded CFRP materials may be one of very effective way of increasing the load carrying capacity and stiffeness characteristics of existing structures.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of different hand positions on scapulothorcic muscle activities during push-up plus exercises. Fourteen healthy males performed push-up plus exercises under three conditions (neutral, $90^{\circ}$ internally rotated, and $90^{\circ}$ externally rotated hand positions), during which the activities of the serratus anterior, pectoralis major, and upper trapezius muscles were recorded using surface electromyography. The statistical significance at three different hand positions was tested by repeated one-way ANOVA. The mean activities of the serratus anterior increased and the mean activities of the pectoralis major decreased in the order of neutral hand position, internally rotated hand position, and externally rotated hand position. There was a significant difference during push-up plus between neutral and externally rotated hand positions as well as in the serratus anterior/pectoralis major activity ratio (p<.0.5). However, no significant differences were found in the activity of the upper trapezius muscle or the serratus anterior/upper trapezius activity ratio. We suggest that the push-up plus exercise performed in the externally rotated hand position could a beneficial strategy for selective strengthening of the serratus anterior muscle, while minimizing the activity of the pectoralis major muscle.

The present experimental study addresses the structural response of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear. Thirteen RC beams were divided into four different sets to investigate the effect of transverse and longitudinal steel reinforcement ratios, concrete compressive strength change and orientation for installing carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. Then, we employed a shear strengthening solution through externally bonded reinforcement in grooves (EBRIG) and externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) techniques. In this regard, rectangular beams of $200{\times}300{\times}2000mm$ dimensions were subjected to the 4-point static loading condition and their load-displacement curves, load-carrying capacity and ductility changes were compared. The results revealed that using EBRIG method, the gain percentage augmented with the increase in the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. Also, in the RC beams with stirrups, the gain in shear strength decreased as transverse reinforcement ratio increased. The results also revealed that the shear resistance obtained by the experimental tests were in acceptable agreement with the design equations. Besides, the results of this research indicated that using the EBRIG system through vertical grooves in RC beams with and without stirrups caused the energy absorption to increase about 85% and 97%, respectively, relative to the control.

Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) have a proven strength enhancement capability when installed into Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams. The brittle failure of traditional FRP strengthening systems has attracted researchers to develop novel materials with improved strength and ductility properties. One such material is that known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This study presents a numerical investigation of the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams externally strengthened with PET-FRP systems. This material is distinguished by its large rupture strain, leading to an improvement in the ductility of the strengthened structural members compared to conventional FRPs. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) model is developed in this study to predict the load-deflection response of a series of experimentally tested beams published in the literature. The numerical model incorporates constitutive material laws and bond-slip behavior between concrete and the strengthening system. Moreover, the validated model was applied in a parametric study to inspect the effect of concrete compressive strength, PET-FRP sheet length, and reinforcing steel bar diameter on the overall performance of concrete beams externally strengthened with PET-FRP.
An innovative retrofit method using pre-stressed steel strips and externally-bonded steel plates was presented in this paper. With the aim of exploring the seismic performance of the retrofitted RC interior joints, four 1/2-scale retrofitted joint specimens together with one control specimen were designed and subjected to constant axial compression and cyclic loading, with the main test parameters being the volume of steel strips and the existence of externally-bonded steel plates. The damage mechanism, force-displacement hysteretic response, force-displacement envelop curve, energy dissipation and displacement ductility ratio were analyzed to investigate the cyclic behavior of the retrofitted joints. The test results indicated that all the test specimens suffered a typical shear failure at the joint core, and the application of externally-bonded steel plates and that of pre-stressed steel strips could effectively increase the lateral capacity and deformability of the deficient RC interior joints, respectively. The best cyclic behavior could be found in the deficient RC interior joint retrofitted using both externally-bonded steel plates and pre-stressed steel strips due to the increased lateral capacity, displacement ductility and energy dissipation. Finally, based on the test results and the softened strut and tie model, a theoretical model for determining the shear capacity of the retrofitted specimens was proposed and validated.
The primary objective of this paper is to study the effectiveness of anchorage on the performance of shear deficient beams externally strengthened with CFRP composites. The overall behavior of the tested beams loaded up to failure, the onset of the cracking, and crack development with increased load and ductility were described. The use of CFRP composites is an effective technique to enhance the shear capacity of RC beams by using CFRP strips anchored into the tension side and from the top by 15-34% based on the investigated variables. Bonded anchorage of CFRP strips with width of 0.1h-0.3h to the beam resulted in a decrease in average interface bond stress and an increase in the effective strain of the FRP sheet at failure, which resulted in a higher shear capacity as compared with that of the U-wrapped beams without anchorage as well as delay or mitigate the sheet debonding from the concrete surface.

This paper presents an analytical prediction of Nonlinear characteristics of prestressed concrete bridges by strengthened of externally tendon considering the work sequence, using beam-column element based on flexibility method and tendon element. The beam-column element was developed with reinforced concrete material nonlinearities which are based on the smeared crack concept. The fiber hysteresis rule of beam-column element is derived from the uniaxial constitutive relations of concrete and reinforcing steel fibers. The tendon element represent the bonded tendon and unbonded tendon behaviors. Beam-column element and tendon element was be subroutine A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of RC and PSC structures was used. The proposed numerical method for prestressed concrete structures by strengthened of externally tendon is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

Seismic retrofitting technologies have been paid attention to structural engineers for rehabilitations of existing building structures vulnerable to seismic loading conditions. This paper introduces the traditional strengtheing method applying externally-bonded steel frames to column and beam elements, and compares with the improved scheme using the frames with additional energy dissipation systems. Throughout experimental studies, it was observed that the method can be effective for promoting the seismic performance of seismic force-resisting systems by guaranteeing strong column-weak beam mechanism. Compared to the traditional manner, it was found that the new scheme can be more efficient for confirming capacity design concept, while energy dissipation systems can provide additional damping effects corresponding to lateral deformation which occurs at seismic force-resisting systems exposed to seismic excitations.

The shape memory alloys (SMAs) are often used in smart materials and structures as the active components. Their ability to provide a high recovery force and a large displacement has been used in many applications. In this paper the radial displacement of an externally pressurized elliptic composite cylinder where SMA liner or strips actuators are bonded on its inner or outer surface is investigated numerically. The elliptic composite cylinders consisting of an inlet duct system with SMAs are designed and analyzed to determine the feasibility of such a system for the removal of stiffeners from an externally pressurized duct of an aircraft inlet. The deformations caused by prestrained SMAs placed on either surface of an elliptic composite cylinder are studied when activated. The externally pressurized elliptic composite cylinders with the SMA actuators were analyzed using the 3-D finite element method incorporated with 3-D SMA behaviors. The results show that the role of stiffeners may be switched by the activated light SMA actuators.

The paper presents the results of experimental studies on two strengthening methods for reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. Bending tests on RC slabs have been carried out to investigate the influence of the increased thickness and externally bonded carbon fiber sheets. The interfaces of new and old concrete of increased thickness specimens have been chipped and treated with bonding agent. The conclusions have been reached as followings. (1) The behavior of specimens with chipped interface is good enough to calculate flexural strength of RC slabs for increased depth. (2) The flexural stiffness of increased depth specimen is severely increased and the deformation of RC slabs is controled. (3) The specimens with externally bonded carbon fiber sheets can be assumed to behave monolithically.
