  • This study analyzes the visual image and the symbolic image of the 'New Woman' main female characters' costumes in three films: , , and , set in the Korean Empire Period and filmed in the last 10 years. The findings are as follows. First, on the visual image by formative characteristics, Gibson girl style was reflected in Western costume design. Korean costume design is based on a traditional style (or modified in some parts). Second, the three films have the same historical background on the visual image by the fidelity of historical research; however, the fidelity of historical research differs and varies with the personality of characters or situations in the films. Third, all three films share the symbolic image by characteristics of characters and 'New Woman' aspect with the same historical background and 'New Woman' female character in common; however, the personality and 'New Woman' aspect of the characters were somewhat different. There was also a distinct difference in the symbolic image of Western and Korean costumes. Western and Korean costumes signify externality versus internality and denial versus the affirmation of national identity in ; dailiness versus ceremonialness and dynamics versus statics in ; and independence versus conformity and variability versus continuity in .

  • As software producers have tried to keep their profit against illegal piracy, contents producers also want to protect their contents from unlawful sharing among users. Some researchers uncovered that the regulation on the unlicensed contents is not the best policy to maximize their profit mainly due to network effect but this issue has been still controversial. In this paper, we develop a model to investigate the effect of regulation against unlicensed contents sharing on the profit of contents producers and present the optimal condition to maximize profit of contents producers under the regulation and non-regulation of unlicensed contents. As a result, we analyzed that the firm's payoff under the regulation on unlicensed contents is not always greater than the payoff under the non-regulation because of network externality. If the additional utility from off-line purchase of type P consumers (who enjoy the additional benefit of off-line purchase) is large enough, then the firm's payoff is maximized without regulation.

  • This paper analyzes the interactions among regional labor markets in Korea. Specifically, we focus on the job market externality between neighboring regions. To estimate the job matching functions, we construct panel data on unemployment, vacancies and hires for the period of January 2004 through December 2007 for 15 cities and provinces in Korea. We employ various spatial econometric techniques to avoid the problem of spatial autocorrelation which frequently arises when dealing with regional data. Main findings are as follows. First, estimation results are consistent with conventional job matching theory. That is, as the number of job searchers and vacancies increase, the number of hires also rises. And it is relatively easier for firms to hire workers than for job seekers to find jobs. Second, it is found that, other things equal, the possibility of job matching is higher in large metropolitan areas than rural areas. Finally, the findings show that the number of job searchers in neighboring areas is negatively correlated with the number of hires in the area. Likewise, the number of vacancies in neighboring areas is positively correlated with number of hires in the area. These provide clear evidence on the existence of regional spillover effects.

  • In this paper, I examine the welfare effects of various revenue-neutral tax reforms in the case of two vertically-related oligopolies(downstream and upstream), where the upstream industry is polluting. I show analytically when and how government can improve welfare by initiating various tax reforms, regardless of either the feasibility of a lump sum transfer or the availability of a tax on pollution. The profit wedge that is the difference between the unit price and the unit cost and the marginal environmental damages(MED) becomes important to decidethe direction of a tax reform and is crucial to determine the direction of welfare-improving tax-subsidy schemes. I also show that a tax on pollution(Pigouvian tax) is superior to a tax on intermediate good even in the case of vertically-related oligopolies, because the former always brings in positive welfare effect from the upstream firms' input substitutability, which a tax on intermediate good cannot provide. Some policy implications for 'reducing environmentally-harmful subsidies' are also discussed.

  • Recently, there has been increasing demand from academic society in Korea for the improvement of current traffic congestion cost estimation methods. The purpose of this study is to suggest a better way to estimate congestion cost followed by in-depth review regarding traffic congestion. The key improvements proposed in this study include: 1) adding social externality to congestion cost, 2) integrating the green house and environmental pollution impacts with congestion costs, 3) taking non-recurrent traffic congestion costs into account for the assessment, 4) revising the criteria to determining the level of traffic congestion speed, and 5) deciding how to limit congestion measurement period. It is found meaningful that the improvements, notwithstanding difficulties in their real case application, provide invaluable insights in our efforts to change the meaning of congestion cost in an era of sustainable growth.

  • The effect of passing pedestrians'characteristics on locational goodwill was empirically modeled and tested. The theoretical basis for the study was central place theory, bid rent and, agglomeration theory, and demand externality theory. The data included information on goodwill, retail rents and passing pedestrians' characteristics in 100 retail trade areas in Seoul. The empirical model was tested with the sample of 1,307 retail units in Seoul, South Korea. The data set was analyzed with the Classification and Regression Tree software. As the results, using the regression tree method, the variables does affect locational goodwill in the each retail trade area were the volume of pedestrians around 2:00 pm on weekdays, volume of pedestrians around 4:00 pm on weekdays, and volume of pedestrians around 8:00 pm on weekdays. In summary, not only the economic base in the retail trade area but also the volume of passing pedestrians should be considered to determine the locational goodwill.

  • This paper develops a simple theoretical model that is consistent with the empirical evidence of an inverted U-shpated relationship between pollution and per capita income, which is so-called environmental Kuznets curve in this literature. Also, by incorporating the issue of environmental externality into an endogenous growth model, I investigate the circumstances under which growth can be sustained with the optimal control of pollution, and hence the sustainable development can be achieved. In order to study the problem of implementing the social optimum in a market economy, I examine the optimality of three different kinds of environmental policy instruments; pollution tax, pollution-permit trading system (pollution voucher), and direct regulation. This paper shows that the optimum can be implemented with a pollution tax or with a voucher system. Also, it is shown that the socially optimal rate of pollution tax should increase proportionally to the growth rate of consumption.

  • As the complexity of society increases, the demand for the forest-based recreational site is also increased. This, in turn. makes congestion an ubiquitous type of externality in forest-based recreational site. Efficient resource allocation requires this congestion effect to be accounted and considered in the decision making process. In this content, this study was conducted to suggest a process which can be used to measure the congestion and determine the optimal number of users. Willigness to pay(WTP) function obtained from Book Han San National Park users suggested that every 20.000 users increased decrease the satisfaction of users obtained from the site visit be 27.3%. For the purpose of demonstration this WTP function is applied tit determine the optimal number of users which is estimated as about 73,000 persons per day.

  • The bearer of the power sector's ETS compliance cost is power consumer for the following reasons. Firstly, power companies are constrained in establishing appropriate strategies to comply with ETS regulations due to the structural differences between the domestic power market and emission trading system. In other words, because power companies do not have a right to determine price and production of electricity, they have to compete with other companies under disadvantaged conditions in the emission trading market. Secondly, because ETS compliance cost is part of power production costs as it is also clearly written in the national greenhouse gas reduction road-map and the second energy supply plan, the cost should be included in power price following the power market operation rule. Thirdly, the most effective method to reduce carbon emissions in power sector is to reduce power demand, which is efficiently achieved through raising power price to a realistic level. Low power price in Korea is the major cause of rising power demand which is also the major cause of rising GHG emission. Therefore, power sector's ETS compliance cost should be included in power price to encourage power consumers' actions on reducing power consumption. Fourthly, when externality cost occurs in the process of delivering public services, usually beneficiary pay principle is applied to identify the cost bearer. Since electricity is one representative public good, the bearer of power sector's ETS compliance cost is power consumer.
