Five commercially valuable Korean Veneroid, Protothaca jedoensis, Ruditapes philippinarum, Saxidomus purpuratus, Cyclina sinensis and Meretrix lusoria were recognized by comparing internal and external morphological characters. As length of the primary tooth was directly grown proportional to shell size but all other characters were not measured according to size of shell. Hence, the morphological characters of these Veneroids may be estimated from the size of the unique primary tooth and it might be enough to be a good criterion for identification of species among Veneriods. Numerical index of hinge plate length of these species was assessed systematically, irrespective of measuring the length, height and width of the shell. The highest internal and external morphological similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and R. philippinarum and the lowest similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and M. lusoria. These similarities may be affected by multiple environmental factors as well as genetic characters. For artificial seed production of P. jedoensis, R. philppinarum, a closest relative among the five species, must be focussed.

The external morphological characters of six taxa of the genus Melampyrum in Korea (M. roseum, M. roseum var. japonicum, M. roseum var. ovalifolium, M. setaceum, M. setaceum var. nakaianum, and M. koreanum) were observed to identify the taxonomic entity. The taxonomically useful characters, confirmed in this study, were as follows; the shape of leaf and bract, the number and location of the setose teeth at bract margin, the shape of cross-section and distribution of hair on the stem, the shape of bract base, the shape and protuberance type of calyx lobes, the color and length of the corolla, and the shape of the capsule. Based on these results, a key to the Korean Melampyrum taxa is provided.
Intraspecific genetic relationship of 19 variation types of the Yam (Dioscorea alata) classified by their external morphological characteristics such as leaf and tuber shape were assessed by DNA using random and specific primer. Twenty two out of 113 primers (100 random[10-mer] primers, two 15 mer [M13 core sequence, and (GGAT)$_4$ sequence]) had been used in PCR-amplification. Only 12 primers, however, were success in DNA amplification in all of the analyzed plants, resulting in 93 randomly and specifically amplified DNA fragments. The analyzed taxa showed very high polymorphisms(69 bands, 71.0 %), allowing individual taxon to be identified based on DNA fingerprinting. Monomorphic bands among total amplified DNA bands of each primer was low under the 50%. Similarity indices between accessions were computed from PCR(polymerase chain reaction) data, and genetic relationships among intraspecific variations were closely related at the levels ranging from 0.66 to 0.90. These DNA data were not matched well with those of morphological characters since they were divided into two major groups at the similarity coefficient value of 0.70. Therefore, Grouping of species into variation types by mainly morphological charactistics was suggested unreasonable.
These studies were conducted to compare the external morphologies of 15 species of land snails in 8 genera of family Bradybaenidae in Korea. Principal component analyses of 15 species can be divided into five groups based on the morphological characters and the result of cluster analyses were in accord with the principal component analyses. The morphological intraspecific similarity of Nesiohelix samarangae of Mitan and Cheju population(S=0.999) proved to be highest. The degree of interspecific similarity between Aegista(Plectotropis)divesa and Aegista(plectotropis)quelpartensis(S=0.970)were more similar than the other interspecies.
Comparative studies on external morphology and anatomical characters were conducted understand the interspecific relationships and possibly to identify the position of Hanabusaya asiatica as an endemic genus among 4 genera and 9 species in H. asiatica and its allied groups. Such morphological characteristics as root shape, leaf size, presence or absence of wings in petiole, corolla and calyx shape, and inflorescence and stigma shape were useful qualitative characters. The morphology of stem, peduncle, calyx lobe, leaf, petiole, and ovary were also good characters to be included in this identification study. In the anatomical observations in these organs, projecting degree of epidermis and number of projecting area rather than cross-sectioned internal structures were found to be valuable index for the classification among species. External morphology and anatomical characters support the position of H. asiatica as an endemic genus very well. Known as the most important external characters to taxonomists(Fedorov, 1957: Nakai, 1952: Hong, 1983), leaf arrangement, inflorescence, and corolla shape were also preven to be very useful characters to identify the genera and species in the H. asiatica and its allied groups.
Saussurea chabyoungsanica was recorded in new species by Lim hyoung tak in 1997. In order to understand the entity of new species, we investigated the new distribution sites, general morphological characters, the width of variation among regional groups. S. chabyoungsanica were located Manduckbong, Mt. Sukbyoung, Mt. Duckhang, and Sukgaejae in ridgeline of the Taebaek mountains. These sites are typical limestone zones of Korea. As a result of PCA analysis for external morphology of S. chabyoungsanica and S. neoserrata, S. neoserrata group was distinctly discriminated from S. chabyoungsanica group. And it was considered that the characters of leaf, corolla and involucral bract were major factors of cumulative rate. And also, through the analysis of external morphology of S. chabyoungsanica by region, Mt. Sukbyoung group was discriminated from other groups.
Pedicularis growing at Mt. Halla of Jeju Island is known as an endemic species of P. hallaisanensis Hurusawa. On the other hand, the plant is morphologically similar to P. amoena, P. spicata, and P. verticillata in gross morphology, so the taxonomic treatment of the taxon remains controversial. To clarify the taxonomic position of the plants, we examined external morphological characters and nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS sequences for P. hallaisanensis and its related species. The plants of Mt. Halla are clearly different from P. amoena and P. verticillata in the morphology of calyx lobes, the length of galea and lower lip, density of glandular hairs on plants, presences of the radical leaves after anthesis and molecular data. However, P. hallaisanensis is not clearly separated from P. spicata distributed in N. E. Asia on external morphological characters and DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacers. In this study, the morphological and molecular data suggested that P. hallaisanensis should be merged into the former species.
Morphological reinvestigation, external characters and discriminant functional analysis(44 qualitative characters) were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea, and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi in order to clarify the limit of intersection and interspecies. And to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, number of corolla lobe and calyx lobe, and species were also distinguished by morphology of cauline leaf, and color and spot of corolla, respectively. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe. The results of the discriminal functional analysis indicated that characters of corolla were the most important qualitative characters to distinguish the Ophelia taxa, and morphology of seed and seed coat was useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. Therefore the difficult problems of identification of species were successfully solved, and the taxonomic position in intrageneric level was clarified on Korean Ophelia.
Objectives : Pharbitidis Semen, the seeds of Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth or I. purpurea (L.) Roth, is well-known traditional herbal medicine in Korea. But it is often marketed as a different seed or mixtures of its closely related species. Thus, the present study aims to provide external and micromorphological characters and identification key by using stereoscope (ST) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) for discriminating authentic of Pharbitidis Semen. Methods : A discrimination on external morphological characteristics of sepals, fruits, seeds, and hilum, testa cell micromorphology in the original plants and its congeneric species was carried out using digital calipers, ST, and SEM. Results : Number of valves (degree of apex of each valve), number of seeds per locule, hairy in capsules and size, luster, density of hairy, hilum shape in seeds and shape of cell, anticlinal, periclinal wall in testa may have high discriminative value. The seeds of Ipomoea nil as an original plant of Pharbitidis Semen were distinguished from other species by the relative larger in size, ovoid-trigonous in shape, mostly flabellate or triangular to trapezoid in outline (c.s.), dull, and puberulent in surface and thicken anticlinal wall. Conclusions : On the basis of the results, an identification key of Pharbitidis Semen and closely related species is provided. Our observations suggest that the combination of morphological characters and other studied results could be helpful in the successfully identified authentic herbal medicines. Moreover, micromorphological characters using SEM could be useful for discriminating authentic medicines.
During a systematic study on Korean nudibranchs, two phyllidiid and two polycerid species were collected and identified with examination of their external morphological characters. As a result of the study, two phyllidiid species, Phyllidia ocellata Cuvier, 1804 and Phyllidiella pustulosa (Cuvier, 1804) were redescribed since there was no descriptions of these species with Korean specimens. And two polycerid species, Thecacera pennigera (Montagu, 1815) and Triopha catalinae (Cooper, 1863) were described as new to Korean fauna. Diagnostic characters of these species are described with illustrations in this study. DNA barcode data from three species examined were also provided for a supplement to morphological identifications.
