  • Heat pump systems are recognized to be heating and cooing systems. In this study, to check the practical application possibility of heat pump systems as low temperature storage systems and get basic data, apples of a long term storage items were stored and performance of low temperature storage and quality changes of apples were evaluated. Cooling coefficient of performance of the system was from 1.1 to 1.3. Although ambient air temperature varied widely from $-13^{\circ}C$ to $29.6^{\circ}C$ during low temperature storage period from January to June, the average temperature of low temperature storage chamber was $1.1^{\circ}C$ at setting temperature of $1.5^{\circ}C$. Sucrose of apples stored by the heat pump decreased from initial sucrose of 15.4% (Brix number) to final sucrose of 14.3%. Weight loss ratio of apples was 9.7% and internal and external view of apples after low temperature storage were very satisfactory with the naked eye.

  • In this paper, a modeling and co-simulation methodology is proposed to predict the radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) from on-chip switching I/O buffers. The output waveforms of I/O buffers are simulated including the on-chip I/O buffer circuit and the RC extracted on-chip interconnect netlist, package, and printed circuit board (PCB). In order to accurately estimate the EMI, a full-wave 3D simulation is performed including the measurement environment. The simulation results are compared with near-field electromagnetic scan results and far-field measurements from an anechoic chamber, and the sources of emission peaks were analyzed. For accurate far-field EMI simulation, PCB power trace models considering IC switching current paths and external power cable models must be considered for accurate EMI prediction. With the proposed EMI simulation model and flow, the electromagnetic compatibility can be tested even before the IC is fabricated.

  • Combustion performance characteristics of subscale high-pressure combustor were investigated at 70 bar combustion pressure. All tests were successfully performed without any damage on the combustor. The mixing characteristics and distribution pattern of the injectors were found to have considerable influence on the combustion performance. The characteristic velocity of the combustor was higher in the injector with internal mixing than that of external mixing and in the injector with smaller mass flowrate. The pressure fluctuations at the propellant manifolds and the combustion chamber were measured to be less than 3% of the mean combustion pressure to meet the combustion stability criterion and to prove stable combustion characteristics of the combustor.

  • A graphite calorimetry system was built and tested under irradiation. The noise level of the temperature measurement system was approximately 0.08 mK (peak to peak). The temperature of the core part rose by approximately 8.6 mK at 800 MU (monitor unit) for 6-MV X-ray beams, and it increased as X-ray energy increased. The temperature rise showed less spread when it was normalized to the accumulated charge, as measured by an external monitoring chamber. The radiation energy absorbed by the core part was determined to have values of $0.798J/{\mu}C$, $0.389J/{\mu}C$, and $0.352J/{\mu}C$ at 6 MV, 10 MV, and 18 MV, respectively. These values were so consistent among repeated runs that their coefficient of variance was less than 0.15%.

  • Large glass furnaces to produce glass for CRT are housed in huge chambers. It is costly to maintain such a chamber in constant temperature, humidity, and(air) pressure. In this study, first, we show that the process of such a huge furnace, which requires the steady maintenance of high temperature, is badly affected by the ambient temperature of surrounding air. Second, an alternative process which not only maintains the relatively constant temperature dispersion around the furnace, but is also economical will be proposed. We calculate the necessary volume of air inflow in the appendix.

  • This paper proposes a new method that reduces RCS(rader cross section) of the aluminum plate using a oscillation system composed of a VGA(variable gain amplifier) and a phase shifter. Once the oscillation system receives the external-RF signal through a probe on aluminum plate, it makes an amplified signal with a specific phase to cancel the signal reflected from the aluminum plate. The signal transmitted from the oscillation system has the same amplitude and out of phase with the reflected signal. And it can be controlled by the VGA and the phase shifter in the oscillation system. In order to validate the performance of the proposed oscillation system, FEM simulator was used and we measured how much an amplitude of the signal reflected from the aluminum plate rotated in phi direction is reduced in an anechoic chamber.

  • This paper presents bead-based microbiocihps to detect and separate target proteins. Micro beads coated with capture proteins were introduced into a microchamber, and target proteins flowing across the chamber were bound and concentrated. The chip was connected with an external fluid system. Bead surfaces were double-coated with photo-cleavable linkers and capture proteins. The proteins bound on the beads were photo-separated under UV irradiation, and excited to be measured in fluorescence. $38{\sim}50{\mu}m$ sized polystyrene beads were used. SOGs(silicon-on-glass) were used to fabricate the microchip having glasses bonded on both sides. 100 ${\mu}m$ thick silicon channel was formed through silicon deep RIE process. The upper glass cover had holed through to have inlets and outlets fabricated by powder-blastings. In this study, biotin and streptavidin were used as capture proteins and detection proteins, respectively. The protein mixtures of streptavidin, HSA(human serum albumin) and ovalbumin were applied for selective detection test.

  • Criticality alarm systems (CASs) are mandatory in nuclear plants for prompt alarm in the event of any criticality incident. False criticality alarms are not desirable as they create a panic environment for radiation workers. The present article describes the design enhancement of the CAS at each stage and provides maximum availability, preventing false criticality alarms. The failure mode and effect analysis are carried out on each element of a CAS. Based on the analysis, additional hardware circuits are developed for early fault detection. Two different methods are developed, one method for channel loop functionality test and another method for dose alarm test using electronic transient pulse. The design enhancement made for the external systems that are integrated with a CAS includes the power supply, criticality evacuation hooter circuit, radiation data acquisition system along with selection of different soft alarm set points, and centralized electronic test facility. The CAS incorporating all improvements are assembled, installed, tested, and validated along with rigorous surveillance procedures in a nuclear plant for a period of 18,000 h.

  • Recently, heat island and dry island phenomena occur frequently due to land surface development and excessive energy consumption in urban areas. As a result, the surface temperature of the building and the entire temperature of its surroundings are increased, and as a result, the durability of the building is rapidly deteriorated. In order to suppress these causes, a method of maintaining the temperature of road heating wires was implemented as a temporary measure, but this did not predict climate change. Therefore, this study is a method to measure the compressive strength, density, and thermal conductivity of lightweight concrete using waste glass foam beads. After fabricating a simple chamber, the temperature and humidity of the inside and outside were measured with an Arduino device in consideration of external factors. Therefore, if waste glass foam beads made through proper mixing are constructed in the urban center, the quality of the urban can be improved.
