The main buildings of the important Buddhist temples - the pagoda, the Buddhist sanctum, the lecture hall - was surrounded by the cloister until Koryo Dynasty. And the Buddhist sanctum was located the center. It meant that the Buddhist sanctum was important building. It is very important thing that we understand the usage of the interior space because the architectural space consists of the unified space by the organic function of the interior space and the exterior space. But there is not so much the study on the interior space of the Buddhist sanctum. So, the purpose of this study is to understand of the interior space of the Buddhist sanctum in Ancient and Medieval Times. Till now, it was impossible that the Buddhist monk or the General public entered the Buddhist sanctum in Ancient and Medieval Times because they regarded the Buddhist sanctum as the place of sacrosanctity and the floor was finished by bricks. But, we saw that they could enter the Buddhist sanctum. Of course the floor of the Buddhist sanctum was finished by bricks, but they spread mats on the floor, took off his shoes in the interior space and used the furniture for sitting on. The plan of the Buddhist sanctum was designed by the process of the ceremony and the way of the enshrinement of the Buddhist statues because it is the place to enshrine the Buddhist statues. They performed the ceremony like as pray, worship, offer food to Buddha, HaengDo - an act to turn round an object of worship - and so on in the interior space of the Buddhist sanctum.
This study is to comprehend the interior space of the Royal Palace in the 15th Century, the early years of Joseon Dynasty. The subject of this study is limited to the center of the Royal Palace, that is Jeongjeon(正殿, the royal audience chamber) and Haengrang(行廊, which encloses Jeongjeon on four sides and has many rooms). It is very important to understand the usage of the interior space because the architectural space consists of the space unified by the organic function of the interior and the exterior space. But there are few studies on the interior space of Jeongjeon and Haengrang at the Royal Palace. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the interior space of those buildings. The result of this study is following. Haengrang has several uses such as a night duty room, a storehouse, a government office or a banquet hall etc. So the interior spaces were finished with various methods that were suitable for the use of each room, and the material of the floor were the ground, Maru(the wooden floor) or Ondol(the Korean traditional heating system) There were held many kinds of ceremonies in Jeongjeon, and the government officials could not enter the inside of that building and took part in the ceremony on the front court of Jeongjeon, except the men performing the ceremony. But the high ranking officials could enter the inside when King gave a banquet and there, they prostrated themselves before King. They sat down with their legs crossed on the ground floor instead of sitting on a chair. When King held tea ceremony with Chinese envoys in Jeongjeon, they sat on Gyoui(交倚, a kind of armchair). Then, the government officials performing the ceremony in Jeongjeon prostrated himself around the King and the Chinese envoys and others stood around them.
Since the accomplishment of industrialization and mechanization, human and the nature have gone farther their own way. Human depending on technology have been increasingly expanding and developing their artificial space and as times go by in such a way, estrangement between the human and nature has resulted in dissatisfaction of human's instinctual desire and devastation of human's living. People, to deal with such challenge, begins taking a look at the nature. In introducing the nature into the modern architecture, a physical natural element is often directly taken into or the shape that could be inferred from the nature is taken. The study was intended to identify the characteristics of the pattern introducing the nature into the modern architecture, as mentioned in the former case, which is summarized as follows, Introduction of the nature contains a variety of functions in the space and it creates the new space by integrating the internal and external space which becomes boundaryless integrated space. The boundary in the building tends to be getting more ambiguous, while the space accommodating the nature serves the interface, playing a role of intermediator for both the internal and external space. It functions the open public place that helps build the natural community among the users but taking the nature into the inner space, and it is used to attempt to change the interior of the building or for ventilation lighting or energy-saving purpose. The spatial meaning was found to have varied depending on pattern of the nature introduced. Such conclusions mentioned hereon is expected to help forecast and understand the forthcoming space accommodating the nature when reviewing the pattern of introducing the nature appeared In modern architecture.
Purpose: Since hospitals have a big impact on the natural and social environment, hospitals' sustainability must be considered in various aspects including environmental, social, and economical aspects. So far, research on sustainable hospitals has mainly been conducted on indoor environment, but outdoor space of hospital is as important as well. The purpose of this research is to study the sustainability of hospital outdoor space and to make proposals for improving sustainable regional public hospitals. Methods: Through preceding research analysis and literature review, the concept of sustainable outdoor space of hospital was defined. Also, the evaluation contents of outdoor space were extracted from domestic and foreign green building certification criteria. With this analytic frame, we visited 4 regional public hospitals in Korea, interviewed the facility managers, and analyzed sustainability of hospital outdoor space. Results: Analysis of 4 regional public hospitals reveals that there is a lack of consideration for sustainability in all 4 categories; urban and network, natural environment, community, and user. In terms of community, sustainability has rarely been applied to all four hospitals. The site selection and terrain of the site were essential to sustainability. Implications: Establishing a master plan considering future expansion is critical. Also more attempt to show regional characteristics is needed. It is necessary to design a comprehensive outdoor space that considers sustainability and also healing environment. Level difference in the site can be used as a design element.
This study suggests institutional and methodological approaches for preservation of South Korea's registered cultural properties of modern architecture. The suggested approaches are as follows. First, in order to improve the current registration and preservation system for cultural properties, we need to employ both structure-based classification and style-based classification. Registration criteria for modern architecture properties need to include more detailed classification in terms of their structure: brick structure, steel concrete structure and post lintel structure. In terms of construction style, the properties need to be further classified into the western style, the traditional style and the Korean-western eclectic style. In addition, protection of registered cultural properties need to be achieved through legislation of a protection system. Second, while the current system sets out six methods for preservation of registered cultural properties of modern architecture, more specific preservation methods types and plans need to be continuously introduced. In particular, as for the method of partial preservation, the method needs to be further classified based on the usage of the relevant structure so as to allow for more diverse options. First, the 'Preservation by Interior Alteration' needs to be added to the category, where the exterior is preserved as it is and the interior is preserved through alteration. Also needs to be added the preservation method where the interior space is preserved as it is and the exterior space is altered, in case the finishing materials of the exterior has deteriorated. Third, if the records on registered cultural properties of modern architecture are to provide the functions of legal evidences regarding management of architectural cultural properties, sources of knowledge required for policy making and implementation and past management record for the future, each phase needs to be closely connected in an organic manner, and we need to establish a management system and plan that go beyond the relevant organizations. Fourth, in order to preserve South Korea's registered cultural properties of modern architecture in its original state, it is imperative to prepare separate criteria for registration of technicians with expertise on modern architecture, and train experts and technicians on modern architecture, which is distinguished from the traditional architecture.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa as a regional public culture facility is the place where it is possible to think over the roles and meanings of a museum. The urn of this research is to provide information for exploring a desirable direction of the design of a regional museum by analyzing the architectural meanings and public property of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. In addition, we arranged the totes and meanings of a regional museum and the concept of the public property in architecture. We also analyzed the architectural quality and the expression of the public property in this museum, as well as the value and meaning of a museum through field researches. The results of this research are as follows. First, this museum breaks with the existing stereotyped Idea to be a space open to the citizens. It secures a wide public space and provides the convenience of access and every facility for citizens. Second, the floor plan is divided into the interchanging area for citizens and an exhibition area; the outskirts of the inside of the museum are planned to be used free of charge for an interchanging space of citizens as a public-owned space of citizens. Third, the public-owned space of citizens includes a citizen exhibition hall, an art library, a kids studio and rest space, which ate all designed lot everyone to enjoy freely. Last, the exterior shape of the museum is simple but harmonize with the surroundings. It has an unique shape showing the local identity, and its most special properties are the convenience of access, introduction of a free space inside, and security of a huge space for children and citizens.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between fashion brand image and store space image. To investigate this study further, one of the luxury fashion brands was selected for a case study and surveys were conducted to 200 participants. This study evaluates the factors of fashion brand images that customers associate with a brand before stepping inside the flagship store. Also it analyzes the factors of store space image after the experience of the flagship store. As a result of the correlation analysis based on quantitative statistic measures, the fashion brand image and store space image coincided highest with extraordinary, young and strong characteristics. According to the space elements of the flagship store, the relationship of the brand image with the store image was investigated. As a result of analysis, customers felt the high correlation with the facade among the architectural elements of flagship store. This resulted in that customers consider that the black box of the facade represents originality of this fashion brand as a concept of spatial elements. As a practical implication, companies should understand that the architectural design is a very crucial component in designing the flagship store, as it gives customers their first impression about a brand. The brand image is required to be integrated through the exterior design of the store. The final conclusion of this study shows that the flagship store provides a space where you can experience the corporate value and brand through the space of brand experience and share an emotional image created by the brand as well.
Many of penthouse apartments began to be built and distributed in Korea from the 2000s. However, we have a transformed definition from the international concept of penthouse. It seems that the penthouse apartments in Korea have a confined definition as a luxury and privileged house-we often find it out from advertisements of newly built apartments. In this thesis, therefore, it needs to make a clear and substantial definition of penthouse. And on the base of this definition, this study is intended to analyze planes of penthouse apartments which are distributed recently. It is in order to find out positive aspects of penthouse apartments and to make practical application of this analysis. The process of this study for plane-planning is as follows. Firstly, it is investigated and analyzed that external factors that have an effect on plane-planning such as locations and types of penthouse apartments. Secondly, an interior of penthouse apartments are divided into a private, public and outward area. And properties of each area through this research show the way of division and arrangement of plane. Thirdly, methods of connection between spaces is analyzed on the base of results of research for the way of partition. Finally, specific characters of penthouse apartments planning is derived from synthesis of research. In conclusion, analysis of plane-planning of penthouse apartments is summarized as follows. The majority of penthouse apartments is arranged to small portions of households and on higher stories in apartment which is situated around Han River or public parks. These external factors influence the plane-planning in both the interior and exterior way. For the exterior planning in space, it becomes important to design bays as many as possible in contact with outside in order to satisfy demands for fine prospects. It is also important to plan extra places naturally such as a terrace in order to provide virtual grounding. In the interior planning, a large size of interior induces to develop space for linking between each area, such as corridors or extra rooms. This makes it possible that the private area is linked to each other, at the same time it has its own distinctiveness according to its usage.
The purpose of this study is to examine residents' perception and needs for storage according to the family life cycle. In order to achieve our goal, the questionnaire survey is used. We sample the questionnaire surveys of 250 apartment households in Seoul. The data collect by the questionnaire survey was analyzed by examining the frequency, percentage on the SPSS/PC+ Statistics package. The results of the study are obtained as follows: 1) In research on the actual storage condition, residents tend to feel constraint on storage of the season goods and the storage satisfaction on the service area is founded lowest. Therefore, it is needed more efficient space plan on the balcony storage and the interior storage for the season goods. 2) In research on the storage consciousness and attitude, residents tend to keep the goods of no use and prefer to arrange neatly rather than use conveniently. Therefore, it is needed more efficient space in the balcony for the storage of the goods of no use and the colsed furniture rather than the open furniture is suited for arrangement. 3) In research on the storage needs, needs for the built-in furniture in all family life cycle show highly and residents want to a space for the exclusive use of the storage.
