During torsional fatigue of externally cracked cylindrical specimen, crack face rubbing may occur. At this time, normal contact forces arise when shear displacements cause the crack faces to be wedged open due to mismatch of the fracture surface asperities. These normal forces, in turn, generate friction force which act in opposition to the applied shear stresses and reduce the effective stress intensity factor. The premise of the proposed work is that friction and wedging can be studied by measuring the shear and normal displacement across the crack mouth. We have measured the crack mouth compliance using the new biaxial extensometer.

Several sensor systems are used to estimate the reinforceing effect of pile in hihg cut slopes, and to find a failure zone in slopes effectively. Inclinometer, extensometer and V/W sensor have shown a great potentiality to serve real time health monitoring of the slope structures. They were embedded or attached to the structures, we conducted field tests and test results have shown great solutions for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures. This research is to seek for the relationships among the slope movement and the reinforceing effect of pile, and the strain distribution in a active zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure zone should be well defined based on the relationships. Also, the relationships between temperature and reinforceing effect of pile, and the strain distribution are estimated in this paper.

In this study, a technique for monitoring of fatigue damage of composite laminates by measuring the stiffness change using embedded intensity-based optical fiber sensors was investigated. Firstly, the underlying measurement principle and structure of intensity-based sensors and then a simple stiffness conversion process was explained. The monitoring technique was evaluated by fatigue tests of composite laminates with an embedded intensity-based sensor. From the test results, the response of the intensity-based sensor showed good correlation with that of surface mounted extensometer. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intensity-based sensors have good potential for the monitoring of fatigue damage of composite structures under fatigue loading. In addition, it could be confirmed that the intensity-based sensors have higher resistance to fatigue than the commercial electrical strain gauge.

The flaw assessment method based on ${delta}_5$ parameter was recently proposed and put to the practical use. However: since it is almost impossible to measure the ${delta}_5$ by the existing commercial clip gager, we need to develope the specially designed gages which are suitable for that purpose. In this research, a double cantilever type ${delta}_5$ clip gage with the traveling distance of 4mm was developed by the finite element analysis and the construction of Wheatstone bridge circuit including strain gages. The linearity of developed ${delta}_5$ clip gage was evaluated by the MTS extensometer calibrator with the proper adapters which allow the 6s clip gage to sit on the calibrator. Consequently, the 6s clip gage revealed the good linearity between the output voltage and the traveling distance of gage.
The plastic strain ratios(R-values) of low carbon steel sheets were determined by the automatic strain measurement method using two extensometers, the indirect photo method for the same tensile specimen during tensile test and the indirect method for the specimen after tensile test. The experimental results showed that the measured plastic strain ratios from the automatic strain measurement method using two extensometers coincided with those from the indirect photo method and the indirect method for all tensile specimens. In addition, the strain dependence of plastic strain ratios could be continuously recorded and the anisotropy of the strength coefficient, K, and strain hardening exponent, n, could be automatically calculated in three directions by computer through the use of two extensometers. The experimental results showed that the strain dependence of R-value was related to the anisotropy of strain hardening exponent in low carbon steel sheets.
Geosynthetics are widely used in different ways such as reinforcement of structures in road, railway, harbor and dam engineering, drainage, separation and erosion prevention. They are especially applied to reinforced retaining wall and slope or ground reinforcement. Recently, geosynthetics reinforced pile supported (GRPS) embankment was developed to improve stability and construability of embankments in railway engineering. Extension strains are usually measured by strain gauges adhered to geosynthetics to evaluate the stability of geosynthetics. However, the measurements are influenced by manufacturing method and stiffness of geosynthetics and also adherence of strain gauge. In this study, wide-width tensile strength tests were performed on three types of geosynthetics including geogrid, woven geotextile and non-woven geotextile. During the test, strains of geosynthetics were measured by both video extensometer and strain gauges adhered to the geosynthetics and the measured results were compared. Results show that the measured results by strain gauges have high reliability in case of large stiffness geosythetics like geogrid and woven geotextile, whereas they have very low reliability for small stiffness geosythetics like non-woven geotextile.
We measured subsidences occurred in a coastal reclaimed land, Noksan industrial complex, from May 2, 1996 to February 21, 1998, using 5 interferograms of JERS-1 L-band SAR. SAR with a spatial resolution of about 16 m can detect the two-dimensional distribution of subsidence that is difficult to be estimated from in situ measurements. Accuracy of the subsidences estimated by 2-pass DInSAR was evaluated using the measurements of Magnetic Probe Extensometer (accuracy of :${\pm}$1 mm) installed at 42 stations. DInSAR measurements were well correlated with the field measurements showing an average correlation coefficient of 0.77. The correlation coefficient was further improved to be 0.87 (with RMSE of 1.44 cm) when only highly coherenced (>0.5) pixels were used. The slope of regression line was 1.04, very close to the unit value. In short, DInSAR measurements have a good linear relation with field measurements so that we can effectively detect a subsidence in the coastal reclaimed area especially using pixels of high coherence (>0.5). The maximum accumulated subsidence was about 60 cm in the study area, while the subsidence in the northern and south western areas were less than 20 cm. The resuts show that DInSAR is extremely useful for geotechnical applications as well as observation of natural deformation.

Instrumentations are essential in NATM tunnels, however measuring instruments are installed and applied without performance verification procedures due to insufficient research on methods, procedures, regulations, etc. to verify the reliability of the measuring instruments. In this study, domestic and foreign regulations relating to the verification and calibration of instruments were investigated and necessities for accreditation standards were proposed. In order to identify the causes of the defects, an external inspection was performed on rock bolt stressmeter and rod extensometer, which are measuring instruments with relatively complex structures. For verifying the performance of these instruments, verification devices were developed that can load step-by-step and the causes of defects were identified in measuring instruments of nine domestic manufacturers. Through the performance test, a number of measuring instruments were found to be defective. It was important to test the performance of the instruments in the state of a finished product and accordingly performance inspection methods and procedures were proposed. The results of this study are expected to help preparing related regulations for verifying instrument performance and selecting instruments in the field.

As a way to improve the safety of automotives and to reduce the weight of vehicles, new forming technologies and advanced materials are in high demand in the automotive industry. However, the advanced strength steel has inferior formability and large springback. In order to overcome such drawbacks, the hot press forming process (HPF) has been being applied for forming of automotive sheet parts. In this work, new equipment was suggested to measure unlimited displacement range compared to previous one which was able to measure only up to 10mm displacement range. The external extensometer connected with grips by wire was applied to equipment so that total strain range was measured up to failure also in high temperature. And the finite element analysis was conducted to characterize the mechanical properties of the HPF steel. Finally, the flow curves were represented by utilizing the Johnson-Cook type equation both in uniform and post-uniform deformation regions.
