  • Inherently safe plants are maintained through the systematic identification of potential hazards, and various hazard evaluation methods have been developed. Recently, much effort is given into the development of automated hazard evaluation system by introducing the expert system. An automated system will help to obtain consistency and to make the result more reliable. HAZOP study is one of the most systematic and logical evaluation procedure. However, it has disadvantages: experts should participate at the same time, the detailed study requires much man-hour, and the results depend on the expertise of the experts. Therefore, the automation of hazard evaluation is necessary to reduce the required time and to get the consistent evaluation results. In this study, HAxSYM, an expert system to automate HAZOP study, is developed. The case studies are performed to validate the effectiveness of the developed system, and the results are compared to the results of traditional method.

  • The material handling equipment selection, that is a key task in the material handling system design, is a complex, difficult task, and requires a massive technical knowledge and systematic analysis. It is also invaluable to justify the selected equipment model by the performance evaluation before its actual implementation. This paper presents an intelligent knowledge-based expert system called "IMESE" created by author, for the selection and evaluation of material handling equipment model suitable for movement and storage of materials in a manufacturing facility. The IMESE was constructed by using the tools of VP-Expert expert system shell, DBASEIII plus, FORTRAN 77, and SLAMII simulation language. The whole process of IMESE is executed under VP-Expert expert system environment.vironment.

  • Augmented reality applications offering location based service on smart phone require attention to users and new usability evaluation methods. The aim of this paper is to introduce new usability principles for application development and usability evaluation, and conduct expert evaluation on the augmented reality applications. We created a set of usability principles by analyzing characteristic of augmented reality applications, and conducted expert evaluation on three augmented reality applications primarily used by smart phone users. In expert evaluation and filtering procedure, we identified six usability problems that three applications have in common and the improvement guideline for the usability problems. The results of expert evaluation was verified by user test with a prototype that was developed using the guidelines. It is expect that the results of this study can be presented usability principles of the augmented reality application and a method of usability evaluation in the middle of new technology development process.

  • Aims of the EXCEPT project and tasks and characteristics of the EXCEPT system are presented based on an analysis of urban planning EIAs. The methodology of evaluation in EIAs, which had to be developed in order to program the system, is based on a model of evaluation processes. Evaluation principles, evaluation rates, an environmental model and a model of the projects being planned are presented. The evaluation concern re-unifies the different components of evaluation again.

  • The design and manufacture of injection molded polymeric parts with desired properties is a costly process dominated by empiricism including repeated modification of actual tooling. This paper presents and expert design evaluation system which can predict the mechanical performance of a molded product and diagnose the design before the actual mold is machined. The knowledge-based system synergistically combines a rule-based expert system with CAE programs. An iterative boundary pressure reflection method(IBPR) is developed to automate the cavity filling simulation program and to predict thermo-mechanical properties of a molded part precisely. Mathematical models of weldline and frozen-in molecular orientation are established to determine the spatial variation of microstructural anisotropies of a molded part from the result of cavity filling simulation. The strength ellipse is devised as and index which represents th spatial distribution of the microstructural anisotropies of a molded part, Heuristic knowledge of injection molding, flow simulation, and mechanical performance prediction is formalized as rules of an expert consultation system. The expert system interprets the analytical results of the process simulation, predicts the performance, evaluates the design and generates recommendations for optimal design alternative.

  • This study has intended to elicit the definition of rural landscape, to classify rural landscape type, and to develop the evaluation indicators of rural landscape, meeting the definition through delphi expert survey method. The survey was performed five times for 80 days by 20 experts. The delphi expert survey asked experts as follows: 1) to fill out open-ended questions regarding the definition of rural landscape, and classification of rural landscape types, and evaluation indicators; 2) to provide their own feasibility evaluation regarding the results of the previous answer; and 3) to reevaluate the feasibility of the definition, types, and indicators. Based on the survey results, this study has found the appropriate definition of rural landscape like the comprehensive complex of physical (objective) and nonphysical (subjective) factors characterizing natural and/or artificial scenary of rural village itself Also, this study has developed the evaluation indicators of rural landscape in accordance with space types and landscape units classified. The developed indicators included areal ratio, the degree of green naturality, the building coverage ratio for physical landscape field, and skyline, landscape adjectives, color landscape, semantic scale.
