  • In this paper, a new approach is proposed for the segmentation of Computed Tomography (CT) head images. The approach consists of two-stage segmentation with each stage contains two different segmentation techniques. The ultimate aim is to segment the CT head images into three classes which are abnormalities, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain matter. For the first stage segmentation, k-means and fuzzy c-means (FCM) segmentation are implemented in order to acquire the abnormalities. Whereas for the second stage segmentation, modified FCM with population-diameter independent (PDI) and expectation-maximization (EM) segmentation are adopted to obtain the CSF and brain matter. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed system is feasible and achieve satisfactory results.

  • Modern society is experiencing a high population density and a centralization of facilities. The clear trends in the construction field are aggrandizement, elevation and specialization of building structures. Such trends require improvements of skills in raising material performances, structuring, planning, designing, and increasing construction capacities. In order to procure high performance materials and construction techniques, a top-quality concrete should be used since it takes up a large part of the material. In recent years, active researches have been done on the ultra high strength concrete. Therefore, this experimental study is strength management to fixed quantity in the field of ultra-strong concrete.

  • The number of long-term survivors is increasing in the western countries due to remarkable improvements in the treatment of childhood cancer. The long-term complications of childhood cancer survivors in these countries were brought to light by the childhood cancer survivor studies. In Korea, the 5-year survival rate of childhood cancer patients is approaching 70%; therefore, it is extremely important to undertake similar long-term follow-up studies and comprehensive long-term care for our population. On the basis of the experiences of childhood cancer survivorship care of the western countries and the current Korean status of childhood cancer survivors, long-term follow-up study and long-term care systems need to be established in Korea in the near future. This system might contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of childhood cancer survivors through effective intervention strategies.

  • The majority of childhood cancer survivors and their families will be psychologically healthy, but may desire and benefit from preventive care. A significant portion of the survivor population will be psychosocially distressed in various aspects by their harsh experience of long cancer treatment, and may warrant professional intervention and treatment. Pediatricians should be aware of the late psychological effects that can occur a year or 2 after treatment, possibly in many aspects of a survivor's life. Not only the cancer diagnosis, but also treatments such as chemotherapy, irradiation, and surgical intervention may exert different long-term effects on the psychosocial outcomes of survivors. Pediatricians need to be more concerned with maintaining and improving the psychological health of this growing number of childhood cancer survivors through long-term follow-up clinics, community support, or self-help groups. Research on all of the psychosocial aspects of childhood cancer survivors is important to recognize the reality and problems they face in Korea.

  • In order to populate ontology, this paper presents a generalization method of ontology instances, extracted from texts and web pages, by using unsupervised learning techniques for word sense disambiguation, which uses open APIs and lexical resources such as Google and WordNet. According to the experimental results, our method achieved a 15.8% improvement over the previous research.

  • While genomics (the set of experimental and computational tools that allows the blueprints of life to be read) opens the doors to a more rational approach to the design and use of living cells to bring about desirable chemical transformations, genomics is, by itself, insufficient. We need tools that allow us to relate genomic and molecular information to cellular physiology and then to the response of a population of cells. We propose the development of hybrid computer cellular models. In such models genomics and chemical detail for a cellular subsystem (e.g. pathogenesis) is embedded in a coarse-grain cell model. Such a construct allows the quantitative and explicit linkage of genomic detail to cell physiology to the extracellular environment. To illustrate the principles involved we are constructing a model for a minimal cell. A minimal cell is a bacterial cell with the fewest number of genes necessary to sustain life as a free living microbe.

  • This paper proposes the design of PI controller using real-coding genetic algorithm showing a good performance on convergence velocity and diversity of population among evolutionary computations. To evaluate the proposed method's effectiveness, we apply the proposed GA-PI controller to the speed control of an actual DC servomotor system. The experimental results show that GA-PI controller has the better control performance than PI controller in terms of settling time rising time and overshoot.

  • CNDO/2 and INDO calculations have been carried out on varying geometries of methyl chloro-and fluoro-formates. Results show that the configuration in which halogen atom is trans to methyl group is the most stable. Atomic charges and overlap population show that the trans form is stabilized by conjugation of carbonyl double bend with the unshared pairs of the ether oxygen and by electrostatic attraction of carbonyl oxygen to methyl group. Dipole moments of the trans forms agree reasonably well with the experimental values but showed that any generalizations made with dipole moments from bond moments should be accepted with considerable reservations.

  • This paper presents a new method that can efficiently solve the integrated problem of line balancing and model sequencing in mixed-model U-lines (MMULs). Balancing and sequencing problem are important for an efficient use of MMULs and are tightly related with each other. However, in almost all the existing researches on mixedmodel production lines, the two problems have been considered separately. In 1his research, an endosymbiotic evolutionary algorithm, which is a kind of evolutionary algorithm, is adopted as a methodology in order to solve the two problems simultaneously. Some evolutionary search capability, rapidity of convergence and population diversity. The proposed algorithm is compared with the existing evolutionary algorithm in terms of solution quality. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our approach.
