  • Results from an experimental study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter(CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out with a flow measurement system specially designed for this study under steady and transient flow conditions. A pitot tube was a tool for measuring flow distribution at the exit of the first monolith. The flow distribution of the CCC was also measured by LDV system and flow visualization. Results from numerical analysis are also presented. Experimental results showed that the flow uniformity index decreases as flow Reynolds number increases. In steady flow conditions, the flow through each exhaust pipe made some flow concentrations on a specific region of the CCC inlet. The transient test results showed that the flow through each exhaust pipe in the engine firing order, interacted with each other to ensure that the flow distribution was uniform. The results of numerical analysis were qualitatively accepted with experimental results. They supported and helped explain the flow in the entry region of CCC.

  • We present numerical and experimental results of the periodic flows inside a rectangular container under a background rotation. In numerical computation, a parallel-computation technique with MPI is implemented. Flow visualization and PIV measurement are also performed to obtain velocity fields at the free surface. Through a series of numerical and experimental works, we aim to clarify the fundamental reasons of discrepancy between the two-dimensional computation and the experimental measurement, which was detected in the previous study for the same flow model. Specifically, we check if the various assumptions prerequisite for the validity of the classical Ekman pumping law are satisfied for periodic flows under a background rotation.

  • In this paper, it is attempted to distinguish the charged particles and to judge the polarity by the use of Thermally Stimulated Current(TSC) and Temperature Gradient Thermally Stimulated Surface Potential Measurement(TG-TSSP)with experimental insulation material XLPE-EVA for power cables which is made by blending cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) and ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer(EVA). In addition, it is performed to investigate the effect of EVA blending. From the experimental results, it is known that for the case of XLPE-EVA blended experimental material, the generation of space charged electric field is not obtained in the high temperature region due to the obatruction of the injection of trapping carrier by the electron and the positive hole.

  • We present numerical and experimental results of periodic flows inside a rectangular container under a background rotation. The periodic flows are generated by changing the speed of rotation periodically so that a time-periodic body forces produce the unsteady flows. In numerical computation, a parallel-computation technique with MPI is implemented. Flow visualization and PIV measurement are also performed to obtain velocity fields at the free surface. Through a series of numerical and experimental works, we aim to clarify, if any, the fundamental reasons \ulcornerf discrepancy between the two-dimensional computation and the experimental measurement, which was detected in the previous study for the same flow model. • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of laminar water flow in a horizontal circular tube by using liquid crystal. A simultaneous measurement technique has been employed to measure the temperature field in a two-dimensional cross section of fluid flow. This study found the temperature distribution for Re =900~1,500 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. To determine some characteristics of the laminar flow, 2D PIV technique is employed for temperature measurement and liquid crystal is used for heat transfer experiments in water. The experimental rig was manufactured from an acryle tube. The test tube diameter of 25mm, and a length of 1200mm. The used algorithm is the gray level cross-correlation method by using Kimura et al. in 1986.

  • This paper introduces optical methods for in-situ measurement of surface temperature and pressure transient in thermal processes having nanosecond time scales. In the temperature measurement, a p -Si thin film whose refractive index is calibrated as a function of temperature is embedded beneath the sample surface and the photothermal reflectance is monitored for estimating the surface temperature. The pressure transients are measured using the photoacoustic optical deflection method. The experimental technique is used to analyze the nanosecond laser induced vaporization process that is central to numerous engineering and bio-medical applications. Based on the experimental results, discussions are made on the experimental technique and the physical mechanisms of laser-driven explosive vaporization phenomena.

  • The objective of this paper is to suggest an experimental technique to measure the out-of-plane vibration intensity of a coupled plate. In order to measure the out-of-plane vibration intensity of the plate, the frequency response technique has been implemented. In this technique, the 2-D intensity vector at a measurement point has been estimate from the frequency response functions measured at 4 points in the neighborhood of the measurement point. The experimental result has been compared with a theoretical result. It showed that the experimental technique can be effectively used to measure the out-of-plane vibration intensity of plates.

  • Thermal deformation behavior has been investigated for unsymmetric laminates composed of various kinds of material layers, such as stainless steel, aluminum, carbon/epoxy or glass/epoxy. The thermal deformations of unsymmetric laminates were predicted using the classical lamination theory and compared with those obtained from experimental measurement. In the case of unsymmetric laminate composed of stainless steel and aluminum layer, the experimental results were agreed well with the values predicted. But in the case of unsymmetric laminate composed of fiber composite layers, there was a considerable difference of thermal deformation between the prediction and experimental measurement, which may be from the change of material properties of fiber composite layers for temperature variation.
