Vector Quantization of Reference Signals for Efficient Frame-Based Classification of Underwater Transient Signals (프레임 기반의 효율적인 수중 천이신호 식별을 위한 참조 신호의 벡터 양자화)

  • When we classify underwater transient signals with frame-by-frame decision, a database design method for reference feature vectors influences on the system performance such as size of database, computational burden and recognition rate. In this paper the LBG vector quantization algorithm is applied to reduction of the number of feature vectors for each reference signal for efficient classification of underwater transient signals. Experimental results have shown that drastic reduction of the database size can be achieved while maintaining the classification performance by using the LBG vector quantization.

Volume holographic correlator for fingerprint recognition (지문 인식을 위한 체적 홀로그래픽 광상관기)

  • In this paper, we propose an optical correlator system using volume holograms for database of matched filters. Optical correlator has high speed and parallel processing characteristics of optics. Matched filters are recorded into a volume hologram that can store data with high density, transfer them with high speed, and select a randomly chosen data element. The multiple reference images of database are prerecorded in a photorefractive crystal in the form of Fourier transform images, simply by passing the image displayed in a spatial light modulator through a Fourier transform lens. The angular multiplexing method for multiple holograms of database can be achieved by rotating the crystal by use of a step motor. Experimental results show that the proposed system can be used for the fingerprint recognition.

  • This study is analyze the damage of warehouse fire accident be made through the fire characteristic database of combustibles and real scale fire test of warehouse mock-up. Combustibles fire tests are carried out for database using RCT (Room Corner Tester) to predict fire growth the goods. A mockup ($3m{\times}3m{\times}2.4m$) of clothes warehouse was built and real scale fire test by LSC (Large Scale Calorimeter) base on the fire characteristic DB. The mock-up of clothes warehouse is made of two type sandwich panels (Glass wool, EPS foam sandwich panel). As a mock-up test result, test 1 (Glass wool sandwich panel) and test 2 (EPS foam sandwich panel) indicating fire growth such as 5 MW, 11 MW of maximum HRR (Heat Release Rate).

Wetland Performance for Wastewater Treatment in Growing and Winter Seasons (생장기와 동절기의 인공습지 오수처리 성능)

  • Field experimnet of constructed wetland for rural wastewater treatment was performed from July 1998 to April 1999 including winter to examine the seasonal effect on the wetland performance. The system worked without freezing even under $-10^{\circ}C$ of air temperature as long as watewater was flowing. BOD removal rates varied in similar pattern as the air temperature, and winter performance was relatively lower than that in the growing season. However, removing performance during winter was still significant, and BOD removal rates were almost the the same as in the growing season. SS removal rate was relativelyless affected by temmperature, but lower decay rate during the winter can result in accumulation of the SS in the system, which releases constituents in the next spring and can affect whole system performance. The winter removal rates of nutrients like T-N and T-P were decreased about half compared to the growing season and low temperature. To maintain stabilized wetland performanced including winter time, supplying minimum heating for plants could be an alternative in field application. Experimental data was compared with NADB(North Americal Wetlands for Water Quality treatment database), and general performance of the system was within the reasonable range. The pollutant loading and effluent concentration of the experimented system were in high margin. Base on the experiment and databases, the required effluent water quality could be achieved if loading rate adjusted as ilulstrated in the database.

  • In spatial database based on spatial data structures, instead of one-dimensional indexing structure, new indexing structure which corresponds to multi-dimensional features of spatial objects is required. In order to meet those requirements, in this paper we proposed new indexing structure for efficient retrieval of spatial database by carrying through the feature analysis of conventional multi-dimensional indexing structures. To improve the sequential search method of supernodes in the conventional X-tree and to reduce the retrieval time in case of generating the huge supernode, we proposed a indexing structure integrating the kd-tree based on point index structure into the X-tree. We implemented the proposed indexing structure and analyzed its retrieval time according to the dimension and distribution of experimental data.

  • A Multilinear LDA Method of Tensor Representation for ECG Signal Based Individual Identification Electrocardiogram signals, included in the cardiac electrical activity, are often analyzed and used for various purposes such as heart rate measurement, heartbeat rhythm test, heart abnormality diagnosis, emotion recognition and biometrics. The objective of this paper is to perform individual identification operation based on Multilinear Linear Discriminant Analysis (MLDA) with the tensor feature. The MLDA can solve dimensional aspects of classification problems in high-dimensional tensor, and correlated subspaces can be used to distinguish between different classes. In order to evaluate the performance, we used MPhysionet's MIT-BIH database. The experimental results on this database showed that the individual identification by MLDA outperformed that by PCA and LDA.

The multiple reference fingerprint photographs of database are prerecorded in a photorefractive material in the form of Fourier transform images, simply by passing the image displayed in a spatial light modulator through a Fourier transform lens. The angular multiplexing method for multiple holograms of database is achieved by controlling the reference directions with a step motor. Experimental results show that the proposed system can be used for secure entry systems to identify individuals for access to a restricted area, security verification of credit cards, passports, and other IDs.

Experimental vs. theoretical out-of-plane seismic response of URM infill walls in RC frames

  • In recent years, interest is growing in the engineering community on the experimental assessment and the theoretical prediction of the out-of-plane (OOP) seismic response of unreinforced masonry (URM) infills, which are widespread in Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings in Europe and in the Mediterranean area. In the literature, some mechanical-based models for the prediction of the entire OOP force-displacement response have been formulated and proposed. However, the small number of experimental tests currently available has not allowed, up to current times, a robust and reliable evaluation of the predictive capacity of such response models. To enrich the currently available experimental database, six pure OOP tests on URM infills in RC frames were carried out at the Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II. Test specimens were built with the same materials and were different only for the thickness of the infill walls and for the number of their edges mortared to the confining elements of the RC frames. In this paper, the results of these experimental tests are briefly recalled. The main aim of this study is comparing the experimental response of test specimens with the prediction of mechanical models presented in the literature, in order to assess their effectiveness and contribute to the definition of a robust and reliable model for the evaluation of the OOP seismic response of URM infill walls.

Scene Recognition based Autonomous Robot Navigation robust to Dynamic Environments (동적 환경에 강인한 장면 인식 기반의 로봇 자율 주행)

  • Recently, many vision-based navigation methods have been introduced as an intelligent robot application. However, many of these methods mainly focus on finding an image in the database corresponding to a query image. Thus, if the environment changes, for example, objects moving in the environment, a robot is unlikely to find consistent corresponding points with one of the database images. To solve these problems, we propose a novel navigation strategy which uses fast motion estimation and a practical scene recognition scheme preparing the kidnapping problem, which is defined as the problem of re-localizing a mobile robot after it is undergone an unknown motion or visual occlusion. This algorithm is based on motion estimation by a camera to plan the next movement of a robot and an efficient outlier rejection algorithm for scene recognition. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of the vision-based autonomous navigation against dynamic environments.

  • This paper is concerned with face recognition for human-robot interaction (HRI) in robot environments. For this purpose, we use Tensor Subspace Analysis (TSA) to recognize the user's face through robot camera when robot performs various services in home environments. Thus, the spatial correlation between the pixels in an image can be naturally characterized by TSA. Here we utilizes face database collected in u-robot test bed environments in ETRI. The presented method can be used as a core technique in conjunction with HRI that can naturally interact between human and robots in home robot applications. The experimental results on face database revealed that the presented method showed a good performance in comparison with the well-known methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) in distant-varying environments.
