The purpose of this study is to analyze empirically the influences of different types of household income and asset in the consumption expenditures of homeowners and lessees with deposit. The data used in this study were the 1996 Korea Household Panel Study. 1,512 households data were selected for the final analysis. The statistical methods adopted for data analysis were frequency, percentage, one-way ANOVA, crosstabs, multiple regression analysis, and chow-test. The results are as follows: (1) There were the differences between three groups in the expenditure levels of each consumption category and the shares of each consumption category of total expenditures. (2) The change of labor income influenced more significantly consumption expenditures of homeowners and lessees with deposit, compared to changes of different types of household income. Also homeowners and lessees with deposit changed their consumption expenditures in different ways to changes of various types of household income. (3) Homeowners increased more significantly their consumption expenditures to increase of net asset than lessees with deposit.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of household characteristics on household expenditures on wedding, funeral, ancestor worship, and 60th birthday anniversary. Data for this study were from the 1996 Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey. OLS regression analysis was used to identify the effect of household characteristics on money spent on family ceremony expenditures. The household income, age of head, education of head, and family size were all significant factors for understanding family ceremony expenditures. The results also indicated that additional income from wife's labor force participation was associated with lesser expenditures on family ceremony, while business income, asset income, and transfer income had no effects on this category. The effect of the third quarter of 1996 was significant on family ceremony expenditures, indication that households spent significantly less for this category in the summer than did in the winter, holding other factors constant.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the health expenditures of the elderly by examinning 1) the level of the health expenditures by socio-demographic characteristics, and 2) the factors influencing the health expenditures of the elderly. The data were collected by individual interview, consisting of a sample of 258 elders living in Chungbuk province. Of them, 244 elders were used for the analysis. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, Anova, Tobit anlysis using SAS program. The results were as follows: there were significant differences in the health expenditures of the elderly by income, age, level of education, residential area, level of health condition, type of marriage, illness. The factors influencing the health expenditures of the elderly were income, residential area, and illness.
This paper examines the changes $(1982{\sim}1992)$ of social welfare expenditures of 12 welfare states. This paper focuses on two questions. First, to what extent have there been changes in social welfare expenditure (total social welfare expenditures, income support expenditures, social service expenditures) of 12 welfare states? Second, what are the causes of the changes in social welfare expenditures? Using Comparative Welfare States Data Set by Stephens(1997) and Social Expenditure Database by OECD (1999), this paper attempts to answer two questions. Fuller-Battese model, a data analysis method in pooled cross-sectional time-series analysis, is adopted to identify variables predicting social welfare expenditure changes. This paper analyzes the predictors separately according to the types of welfare states by Esping-Andersen (1990). Predictors are different by the types of welfare states; thus, economic variables such as GDP and financial deficiency have effects on social welfare expenditures of Liberal and Corporatist welfare states. while they have no effects in Social Democratic welfare states. Political variables has effects on social welfare expenditures of Corporatist welfare states, not of Liberal and Social Democratic welfare states. Demographic variables has effects on social welfare expenditures of Social Democratic welfare states rather than Liberal and Corporatist welfare states. This paper provides an additional knowledge about social welfare expenditure changes of 12 welfare states and discusses implications for the development of welfare state in Korea.
This study was conducted for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the patterns of medical care expenditures, and identifying some determinants of medical care expenditures in the rural Korea. Nine guns were chosen from the eight provinces, excluding Cheju island. One gun in each province and two villages were selected from the each myon or ub within the selected guns. The total number of households was 1,789 and the sample size was 9,826 non-institutionalized people. Followings are the major findings of the study : 1) Medical care expenditures increase proportionally with age in terms of cost per patient, per episode of illness, per treated case, and per person. Averagely, it cost 2,756 won per patient, 2,614 won per spell of illness, 4,361 won per treated case, and 413 won per person. 2) Medical care expenditures increase proportionally with educational level of patients. College graduates spent the most, 4,726 won per patient, 5,987 won per treated case, and 670 won per person. 3) The male spent a little more than the female in terms of per patient, per episode, and per person. For example, a male spent 23 won more than a female. 4) Those who were suffering from illnesses longer than 1 year spent three times more than that had illnesses of less than 1 year duration. 5) The simple correlation coefficient between activity restriction and medical care expenditures was the highest among others, 0.491. The next was 0.294 between duration of illness and medical care expenditures. 6) Attempts are made to identify the explanatory variables in medical care expenditures. Thirty one per cent of the variances in tile expenditures can be accounted for by the selected 15 predictors. Those predictors belonged to clinical renditions, such as activity restriction, duration of illness, and nature of conditions, are proved to be the most potent independent variabes. Level of education and monthly family income are also significant in terms of beta coefficient. Further studies are called for to unreveal the determinants of medical expenditures.
The objective of this study is to analyze the determinants of at-home laver consumption expenditures using the data from a survey of households implemented in 2009. It happened that non-response ratios of monthly expenditures on dry laver and flavored laver among sampled households are 18.8% and 25.6%. Accordingly, this study tries to analyze the determinants affecting at-home laver consumption expenditures by using type II tobit model, one of sample selection models, to deal with sample selection bias caused from non-response data. Analysis results show the age variable positively affects expenditures on dry laver but negatively contributes to expenditures on flavored laver. In addition, the household size, the household's income, the degree of preference for laver have positive relationships with both expenditures. Household size elasticity and income elasticity of the expenditure on dry laver are estimated as 0.220 and 0.251. In the case of flavored laver, these elasticities are estimated as 0.484 and 0.261. Such analysis results can provide information on division of the at-home laver consumption market into groups with high willingness to expense and implementation of detailed marketing strategies to increase at-home laver consumption. The methodology of this study can be applied to consumer preference analysis on other marine products and other analyses on sample with non-response data in the fishery research.
The purposes of this study are as follows: 1) To estimate the amounts of differences in service expenditures resulting from the effects of mother's marital and employment status. 2) To find out the relationship of socio-economic variables to expenditures for time-saving durables and services Data were taken from the 1988-1989 Consumer Expenditure Survey. The sample consisted of 2,216 families with 334 single-mother families and 1,792 married-mother families. Tobit regres-sion analyses were used to test of variables related to expenditures for (a) food away from home. (b) clothing care (c) child care (d) domestic services and (e) total services. The results of this study were as follows; 1) The percentage difference from non-employed married-mother families was higher for employed single-mother families than for other types of families indicating the positive effect on expenditures on market substitutes of mother's marital and employment status. 2) The father's wage rate was associated only with expenditures for domestic services. A positive relationship was found between family nonlabor income and domestic services Total family income was positively associated with expenditues for all dependent variables. There was a negative relationship between expenditures for child care and age of mother squared. Mother's education was associated with expenditures in all categories. Families of nonwhite spent less on time-saving durables. food away from home, and total services and spent more on apparel services than families of white mothers. The presence of young child was positively related to total services and child care services and negatively related to food away from home.
Clothing consumption expenditure (UX) data of Korean consumers during the period of 1965 to 1993 were analyzed by time series analysis technique. According to the results of regression analysis, current income and UX of the year before showed most significant influences on the current UX. This means that the absolute and permanent income hypotheses can be accepted in case of clothing expenditures. However the effect of income decreased as the economy developed. The relative price of clothing had weak or no influence on clothing expenditures. It was also found out that CSX of the year before, the change of income, relative price of clothing ware the factors that affected clothing expenditures. From the estimation of Houthakker-Taylor state adjustment model, a negative stock coefficient was obtained. That is, clothing is subject to an inventor effect and Korean consumers regard clothing as one of the durable goods. To define whether clothing is a "luxury" or a "necessity", income and relative price elasticity of clothing expenditures were estimated. Income elasticity of clothing is slightly below 1.0 in case of national aggregate expenditures, and slightly above 1.0 in case of urban consumers' expenditures. Income elasticity has declined over time. Meanwhile the coefficient of price elasticity is not significant, indicating that the relative price of clothing have little connection with clothing expenditure.lothing expenditure.
This study examines whether expenditures in information technology (IT) are associated with increases in the Tobin's q ratios a measure of organizational performance. It uses two groups of sample, Korean and American firms that disclose IT expenditures. For the all-firms group of each country, the association between IT expenditures and Tobin's q ratios is positive and statistically significant. But the association varies among industries. For Korean firms, IT expenditures appear to increase Tobin's q ratios for the machine and equipment manufacturing industry group (SIC3-2). IT expenditure ratio of this group as a percent of total sales is highest among the industry groups. For all service industry groups(SIC4&5), the estimated coefficient of IT expenditures is positive but statistically insignificant. For American firms IT expenditures in most of the manufacturing industry groups appear to increase only a little, if at all, for the Tobin's q ratios. But IT expenditures appear to have a greater impact on Tobin's q ratios for all service industries (SIC4-7). For three service industries tested (transportation and telecommunication- SIC4, financial- SIC6, consulting and other service industry- SIC7), the estimated coefficient of IT expenditures is positive and statistically significant. The evidence from both Korean and American firms suggests that IT expenditures in service industries provide a greater impact on an organizational performance than ones in manufacturing industry. To test whether service industries use a competitive strategy utilizing IT as a core competence, the samples ore divided into two groups, service and manufacturing industry. For Korean firms, both IT and R&D expenditures in manufacturing industry are associated with increases in Tobin's q ratios. But for service industry, the estimated coefficient of only IT expenditure is positive. For American firms, the estimated coefficients of both IT and advertising and R&D (ARD) expenditures in manufacturing industry are positive but the coefficient of only ARD is statistically significant. For service industry, the estimated coefficient of only IT expenditure is positive and statistically significant. The evidence may suggest that manufacturing industry uses both R&D and IT strategies to increase a competitive advantage but uses R&D strategy as a core competence. However, service industry uses IT strategy as a core competence to increase a competitive advatage.
Under the assumption that the size of military expenditures is largely determined by economic potential and military requirements as well, this paper conducts an econometric analysis for the purpose of predicting Korea's military expenditures using a technique of pooling time-series data (1967-1976) and cross-section data(95 countries) on the percentage of military expenditures to GNP (Cross National Product) and economic growth rate.
