  • The sources of uncertainty in the analysis of liquified natural gas (LNG) process are evaluated. The uncertainty sources evaluated are the repeatability of measurement, non-linearity of GC, the uncertainty of standard gas used for calibration, difference of gas sampling and deviation after GC calibration and major revealed sources are the non-linearity of GC, the uncertainty of standard gas and the deviation after GC calibration. The determined values and uncertainties of methane and ethane as the major components are $90.0%mol/mol{\pm}1.9%$ (relative and 95% level of confidence) and $6.26%mol/mol{\pm}0.08$ (relative and 95% level of confidence), respectively. The contribution of uncertainty varies depending on the source of uncertainty and gas component. In the case of methane, non-linearity of GC, the uncertainty of standard gas and deviation after GC calibration contribute 0.28%, 0.25% and 0.24% of relative expanded uncertainty, respectively.

  • We have developed the calibration technique of the VT comparator using nonreactive standard resistors, which evaluates both accuracy and linearity of the VT comparator by comparing experimental values with theoretical values. The correction values of VT comparator obtained by using both our method and wide ratio error VT are consistent within the expanded uncertainty. Furthermore the specification for ratio error of VT comparator have been revaluated.

  • This study was demonstrated to estimate the measurement uncertainty of 23 multiple-component amino acids from beef bone extract by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The sources of measurement uncertainty (i.e. sample weight, final volume, standard weight, purity, standard solution, calibration curve, recovery and repeatability) in associated with the analysis of amino acids were evaluated. The estimation of uncertainty obtained on the GUM (Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement) and EURACHEM document with mathematical calculation and statistical analysis. The content of total amino acids from beef bone extract was 36.18 g/100 g and the expanded uncertainty by multiplying coverage factor (k, 2.05~2.36) was 3.81 g/100 g at a 95% confidence level. The major contributors to the measurement uncertainty were identified in the order of recovery and repeatability (25.2%), sample pretreatment (24.5%), calibration-curve (24.0%) and weight of the reference material (10.4%). Therefore, more careful experiments are required in these steps to reduce uncertainties of amino acids analysis with a better personal proficiency improvement.

  • The purpose of this study was to calculate uncertainty of orthodontic measurement in skeletal class III malocclusion children using lateral cephalometry analysis software which obtained traceability in previous study. Using this data, standard reference of measurement value for skeletal class III malocclusion was obtained. Lateral cephalometric data was collected from 144 children who visited Pediatric Dentistry from 2017 to 2020 for orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic measurement was analyzed with software which obtained traceability. Type A evaluation of uncertainty and type B evaluation of uncertainty was calculated to obtain combined standard uncertainty and expanded uncertainty. Standard reference of skeletal class III children was compared to standard reference of skeletal class I children. Distribution range for skeletal class III malocclusion children aged 6 to 10 with 95% confidence interval was provided using calculated uncertainty of orthodontic measurement value.

  • The aim of this study was to obtain the traceability of the software used to analyze lateral cephalometry and to calculate the uncertainty of the measurements. Furthermore, this study aimed to provide a basis for obtaining standard references for measurement values for orthodontic treatment in children. Cephalometric data were collected from 100 children diagnosed with class I malocclusion between the ages 6 to 13 years who visited the pediatric dentist at Seoul National University Dental Hospital. To ensure traceability, a phantom device was created. Correction values were calculated by measuring the length and angle of the phantom device using the software. Type A uncertainty was calculated by obtaining the standard deviation of cephalometric measurements of 100 persons and the standard error of repeated measurements. Determination of the type B uncertainty was induced by minimum resolution and the position of the head. Using these, the combined standard uncertainty was obtained and the expanded uncertainty was calculated. The results of this study confirm that the currently used software has high accuracy and reliability. Furthermore, the uncertainty of orthodontic measurements in Korean children aged 6 to 13 years was calculated, and distribution range for class I malocclusion with 95% confidence interval was suggested.

  • The inter-comparison project for seawater salinity measurements, in which 25 laboratories from 16 countries took part, was conducted by JCOMM (Joint WMO/IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology) for the first time in 2014. Two seawater samples of different salinity values ranging from 30-35 and 20-25 for Sample A and Sample B respectively and which had sufficient homogeneity and stability were distributed to all participants. Participants measured the salinity in their own laboratories at least 3 times and reported the results. Statistical treatments were applied to the results to assess discrepancies among laboratories. 20 out of the 25 laboratories used laboratory salinometers and statistics for this group were denoted as belonging to group ${\alpha}$; while 5 out of the 25 laboratories used hand-held measuring instruments and statistics for this group were denoted as belonging to group ${\beta}$. Bias described as discrepancy among laboratories in group ${\alpha}$ was within ${\pm}0.001$ and expanded uncertainty (k = 2) was in the vicinity of 0.002. The bias and the uncertainty of Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), in group ${\alpha}$, were 0.000 and 0.002, respectively. The biases of group ${\beta}$ were greater than group ${\alpha}$ because of constraints related to instrument accuracy. Biases from 3 laboratories in group ${\beta}$ exceed the accuracy specification of the corresponding instruments. Considering that the uncertainty of Standard Seawater (SSW) is of the order 0.001 to 0.002, the inter-comparison results show that 16 laboratories among the 25 laboratories made high quality measurements, largely indistinguishable from one another.

  • A sea trial of the speed performance test is the one of the most important means of verifying a ship's performance, and the International Organization for Standardization established a standard for this test in 2015. Environmental disturbances such as wind and waves are always present under real sea conditions, however, so it is impossible to accurately estimate delivered horsepower under ideal conditions. These disruptive influences also make it difficult to evaluate the positive effect of recently developed energy-saving devices. In this study, uncertainty analysis of improved speed performance was carried out using Monte Carlo simulation to confirm the energy-saving efficiency of a ship equipped with an air-lubrication system. The findings showed the average power saving to be 3.2%, with the expanded uncertainty of ± 2.7% at a 95% confidence level (k=2).

  • A reverberation chamber should be designed and constructed so as to satisfy its purposes and available space. However, it is somewhat difficult to meet the intended design requirements due to various errors from construction process. So, the post-construction measurement of its volume and surface areas is very essential to check the actual volume and volume uncertainty of a reverberation chamber These values should be carefully calculated and accurately estimated since they are used not only to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of building materials but also to calculate uncertainties for other acoustic characteristics. In this work, the method for the calculation and uncertainty estimation of the volume of a reverberation chamber is presented. To this end, the coordinates of all corners was measured with Total Station after construction. The results showed that the calculated volume of the measured reverberation chamber differs by 5 % from the design specification. The expanded volume uncertainty was also estimated to be about 2 % of the total calculated volume.

  • Traceability establishment in chemical measurements is a like a linkage established through an unbroken chain from the measured results to the international system (SI) of units. The primary process for traceability establishment is the purity assignment of a target material to be measured. In this study, we studied the purity assignment of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP). The presence of 17-OHP is indicative of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and it builds up due to the deficiency of 21-hydroxylase and 11β-hydroxylase enzyme in the human blood. The purity assignment of 17-OHP was performed by the mass balance method, in which the impurities are categorized into four classes: total related structural impurities, water, residual organic solvents, and nonvolatiles/inorganics. The total related structural impurities were characterized by HPLC-UV; water content was determined by Karl-Fisher coulometer; and the total residual solvents and nonvolatiles/inorganics were determined by TGA. The purity of 17-OHP from a commercial manufacturer was calculated as 993.30 mg/g, and the expanded uncertainty was 0.58 mg/g. The proposed method was validated by uncertainty evaluation and comparing with the actual value of purity.

  • Force measuring devices should be calibrated to guarantee their test results. In order to establish the force standards in Korea, deadweight machines of 5 kN, 20 kN, 100 kN and 500 kN capacity and a hydraulic force standard machine of 2 MN capacity were installed at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS). As heavy industries in Korea have been developed, we should measure large forces over 2 MN capacity precisely in industries. We developed a 10 MN force standard machine with built-in force transducers which is more compact and cheaper than hydraulic force standard machines which have been widely used as large force standards in most national metrology laboratories. Test results reveal that the relative expanded uncertainty of the force machine is less than 4.1 $\times$ 10-4 in the range of 1 MN-4.5 MN.
