Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of motor function recovery and change of the heart function factors(ECG & Troponin I) with ischemic stroke patients by different amounts(times) exercise. Methods : Forty-six consecutive chronic hemiparetic patients with cerebral infarct were randomly assigned to two groups: Group 1 (exercise time 60 minutes/day) and Group 2 (exercise time 120 minutes/day). Types of exercise included static bicycle, isokinetic exercise, and standing or gait exercise on a treadmill. Outcome measures included the level of motor recovery (Fugl-Meyer Scale, FMS) and heart function (ECG and Troponin I), and measurements were performed three times: pre-test, 8 weeks and 12 weeks. Results : There was a significantly different change of motor function recovery and ECG between two groups during treatment period. Especially there were significantly change period of pre-test to 8 weeks on ECG and pre-test to 12 weeks on motor function recovery. But Troponin I has no significantly different change between two groups during treatment period. Also there was no significantly different change of motor function recovery and ECG and Troponin I with between two groups during treatment period. Conclusion : The exercise program improved motor function and change ECG without Troponin I in two groups. The result of this study shows that no matter how different amounts of exercise to effect of motor function recovery and heart function test in chronic patients with cerebral infarct.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in heart rate according to recovery methods after circuit weight training exercise. Fourteen men in their twenties were selected as subjects, and three sets of circuit weight training were performed by cycling six sports, and two recovery conditions (dynamic and static) were performed immediately after exercise. Changes in heart rate did not have an interactive effect according to recovery method and time, and both conditions showed significant changes between sets 1 and 2, and between sets 3 and after recovery. In this study, the high heart rate of 2 sets and 3 sets was seen as a result of exercise stimulation, and the low heart rate of 1 set was thought to be due to the decrease in vagus nerve activity rather than the role of catecholamines. On the other hand, the heart rate after 20 minutes of exercise did not show any difference according to the recovery method, which could mean that the recovery process due to the aquatic environment can act more strongly than the process of dynamic recovery and static recovery. It is thought that the characteristics affected the sensory and circulation of the body, and thus the change of the afferent signal and the level of metabolic products generated in the active muscle.
Heart rate recovery (HRR) immediately after a treadmill exercise test is a function of vagal reactivation. A delayed heart rate recovery is associated with an increased risk for overall cardiovascular mortality. The purpose of this study is to find out if metabolic syndrome is associated with autonomic nerve function and exercise capacity in healthy adults. We measured the treadmill exercise capacity (METs) and heart rate recovery in 119 subjects through a medical checkup at $J$ General Hospital. The metabolic syndrome was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria. The value for the HRR was defined as the difference between the heart rate obtained during the peak exercise and the heart rate obtained at first minute during the recovery period. The subjects with the metabolic syndrome had significantly lower exercise duration ($9.6{\pm}1.5$ vs $8.7{\pm}1.4$), METs ($11.6{\pm}1.7$ vs $10.4{\pm}2.5$), and HRR ($37.5{\pm}14.3$ vs $27.1{\pm}8.9$). The waist circumference in subjects with the metabolic syndrome was more strongly correlated with HRR ($r$=-.517, $P$ <.001) than in normal subjects. Furthermore, delayed HRR was associated with high resting heart rate and increased waist circumference ($P$=.032, $P$ <.001, respectively). In conclusion, delayed HRR during the first minute after a treadmill exercise test was associated with the metabolic syndrome risk factors. Delayed HRR was also associated with high resting heart rate and increased waist circumference.

PURPOSE: This research was intended to investigate the influence to function recovery at the early stage after surgery, by conducting Multipath Electrical Simulation and isometric exercise treatment as early stage medical treatment method for Total knee arthroplasty patients. METHODS: The subject of 30 patients having Unilateral Total knee arthroplasty over age 65, Multipath Electrical Simulation and isometric exercise (experiment group I), Conventional Electrical Simulation and isometric exercise (experiment group II) and isometric exercise (control group). The intervention was performed in 5 times per a week and 60 minutes per a day during 4 weeks. We performed research by conducting Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation and isometric exercise together and measured pain, range of motion, muscle strength and gait ability before and after intervention. RESULTS: The result showed therapeutic improvement in experiment group I, experiment group II and control group, but Multipath Electrical Simulation and isometric exercise showed significant improvement in function recovery of early stage compared to Conventional Electrical Simulation and isometric exercise, only isometric exercise. CONCLUSION: Based on research result, in order for early state function recovery of Total knee arthroplasty patients, when conducting neuromuscular electrical stimulation and isometric exercise together, especially when applying Multipath Electrical Stimulation, we could know that it showed more significant improvement to function recovery after surgery. Also, we suggest that Multipath Electrical Simulation may become a useful tool as a method for intervention and performing in various diseases for weakening of Quadriceps muscle.
Physical activity is a primary cancer control strategy that has received little attention to date. However, an Increasing number of epidemiological studies have proposed that physical exercise may be beneficial by enhancing anticancer immune system responses. We investigated the effects of acute exercise on changes in nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. The amounts of NO generated by abdominal macrophages in mice were measured after exercise. Thirty-two mice, which were challenged with thioglycollate broth to activate peritoneal macrophages, were randomly assigned to control, exercise and recovery groups. The mice exercised on a motor-driven treadmill for 3 consecutive days, either moderately (18m/min, 30 min/day, 5% grade) or severely (18-35m/min, 60 min/day, 5% grade). The mice were killed immediately after exercise or after 6 hrs of recovery. Nitric oxide was quantified by the Griess assay. The exercised mice showed higher levels of NO generation than those of the control mice, but the intensity of exercise had no significant effect on NO generation. Mice allowed six hours of recovery after exercise showed higher levels of NO generation than that of animals sacrificed immediately after exercise, but there were no significant differences in NO generation with variations in the intensity of exercise. Increased levels of iNOS were found in the exercised groups, and this was greatest in the groups allowed six hours of recovery compared to those groups sacrificed immediately after exercise. The results of this study suggest that acute exercise may enhance an immune response by inducing macrophage-derived NO generation; these results support the epidemiological findings which support the benefits of exercise in the prevention and control of cancer. Further study is needed to determine the physiological significance of these findings, which could be applied to the use of therapeutic exercises to assist in the prevention and control of cancer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the systematic breathing exercise program on recovery of patients with pneumothorax. Methods: An nonequivalent interrupted time-series control group posttest design was used. Participants were 40 inpatients (Experimental Group; 20, Control Group; 20) at the one University Hospital in U city. The systematic breathing exercise program including education on deep breathing exercise using incentive spirometry, Range of motion (ROM) exercise in shoulder joint, walking exercise and feedback were provided to the experimental group, while the control group carried out deep breathing exercise using incentive spirometry. The duration of chest tube insertion, duration of hospitalization, and frequency of analgesics use were measured. The data were analysed by a SPSS/WIN program. Results: The duration of chest tube insertion and duration of hospitalization in the experimental group were significantly shorter than the control group. However, there is no difference of the frequency of analgesics use between the experimental group and control group. Conclusion: The result showed that the systematic breathing exercise program was effective to improve recovery of patients with pneumothorax. This program can be applied in hospitals for patients with pneumothorax as one of the nursing intervention modalities.
This study selected 10 university football male players and repeatedly treated them as sports massage group, exercise resumption group, and stability resumption. After maximum exercise, when sport massage, exercise resumption, and stability resumption were applied during recovery, blood lactic acid concentration and $LDH_5$ isozyme concentration were examined. Finally this study obtains the following conclusion 1. There was a significant difference in both lactic acid concentration and time between groups. Besides, the cross-action on group and time was significant. 2. There was a significant difference in both $LDH_5$ concentration and time between groups. Besides, the cross-action on group and time was significant. Based on the above findings, this study suggests that sport massage resumption and exercise resumption remove blood lactic acid more quickly than stability resumption to promote recovery. That means that sport massage and exercise resumption anre very effective for lowering the level of fatigue. Thus sport massage or exercise resumption treatment is considered to have a very positive effect on player's quick recovery and it should be used aggressively in a field.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of treadmill exercise of low-intensity and moderate- intensity on the functional recovery and histological change in spinal cord injury (SCI) rats. SCI was induced by the spinal cord impactor dropped after laminectomy. Experimental groups were divided into the Group I (normal control), Group II (non-treatment after SCI induction), Group III (low-intensity treadmill exercise after SCI induction), Group IV (moderate-intensity treadmill exercise after SCI induction). After operation, rats were tested at modified Tarlov scale at 2 days with divided into 4 groups, and motor behavior test (BBB locomotor rating scale, Grid walk test) was examined at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days. For the observation of damage change and size of the organized surface in spinal cord, histopathological studies were performed at 21 days by H & E, and BDNF(brain-derived neutrophic factor) & Trk-b immunohistochemistry studies were performed at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 days. According to the results, treadmill exercise can play a role in facilitating recovery of locomotion following spinal cord injury. Specially, moderate-intensity treadmill exercise after SCI induction was most improvement in functional recovery and histological change.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of exercise of diverse intensities on the recovery of articular cartilage in osteoarthritic rats. METHODS: Over a period of four weeks, the authors applied treadmill exercise programs of diverse intensities to Sprague-Dawley rats, to which intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate(MIA, 3mg/$50{\mu}l$, diluted in saline) was applied to the right knee joint to induce osteoarthritis. The four-week exercise program was not carried out with the control group(CG, n=10). Exercise programs of applicable intensities were applied to the low-intensity exercise group(LEG, n=10), moderate-intensity exercise group(MEG, n=10), and high-intensity exercise group(HEG, n=10) over the four weeks. Observations were made of morphological changes in the rats' articular cartilage, using hematoxylin and eosin stains. RESULTS: there were significant differences(p<.05) in the comparison of articular damage scores between the four groups involved. Articular cartilage damage scores were found to be significantly lower in the LEG, MEG, and HEG than in the CG, indicating that exercise helped with the recovery of cartilage. Of these latter three groups, the MEG showed the highest level of recovery, while the HEG showed the lowest. CONCLUSION: These study results suggest that exercise is effective in treating OA. They also indicate that in prescribing exercise to treat osteoarthritic patients, exercise of moderate intensity is most suitable to patients' physical conditions, rather than low or high intensity, maximizes, and so should be used to maximize the effects of therapy.
