Train Booking Agent with Adaptive Sentence Generation Using Interactive Genetic Programming (대화형 유전 프로그래밍을 이용한 적응적 문장생성 열차예약 에이전트)

  • As dialogue systems are widely required, the research on natural language generation in dialogue has raised attention. Contrary to conventional dialogue systems that reply to the user with a set of predefined answers, a newly developed dialogue system generates them dynamically and trains the answers to support more flexible and customized dialogues with humans. This paper proposes an evolutionary method for generating sentences using interactive genetic programming. Sentence plan trees, which stand for the sentence structures, are adopted as the representation of genetic programming. With interactive evolution process with the user, a set of customized sentence structures is obtained. The proposed method applies to a dialogue-based train booking agent and the usability test demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed method.

A Design of Capacitated Hub-and-Spoke Networks with Direct Shipment: Evolutionary Algorithm based Approach (용량제한과 직접수송이 있는 Hub-and-Spoke 네트워크 설계: 진화알고리듬 기반의 접근법에 의해)

  • In this paper we address a design problem for hub-and-spoke networks and then consider a capacitated hub locations problem with direct shipment (CHLPwD). We determine the location of hubs, the allocation of nodes to hubs, and direct shipment paths in the network, with the objective of minimizing the total cost in the network. In this paper, CHLPwD is formulated as 0-1 integer programming. We develop an evolutionary algorithm here to solve the large sized CHLPwD. To do this, we present the representation and the genetic operators suitable for the problem and propose a heuristic method for the allocation of nodes to hubs. To enhance the search capability, problem-specific information is used in our evolutionary algorithm. The proposed algorithm is compared with the heuristic method in terms of solution quality and computation time. The experimental results show that our algorithm can provide better solutions than the heuristic.

  • Ecological modeling faces some unique problems in dealing with complex environment-organism relationships, making it one of the toughest domains that might be encountered by a modeler. Newer technologies and ecosystem modeling paradigms have recently been proposed, all as part of a broader effort to reduce the uncertainty in models arising from qualitative and quantitative imperfections in the ecological data. In this paper, evolutionary computation modeling approaches are introduced and proposed as useful modeling tools for ecosystems. The results of our case study support the applicability of an algal predictive model constructed via genetic programming. In conclusion, we propose that evolutionary computation may constitute a powerful tool for the modeling of highly complex objects, such as river ecosystems.

A Study on the Stabilization Control of IP System Using Evolving Neural Network (진화 신경망을 이용한 도립진자 시스템의 안정화 제어기에 관한 연구)

  • The stabilization control of inverted pendulum (IP) system is difficult because of its nonlinearity and structural unstability. In this paper, an Evolving Neural Network Controller (ENNC) without Error Back Propagation (EBP) is presented. An ENNC is described simply by genetic representation using an encoding strategy for types and slope values of each active functions, biases, weights and so on. By an evolutionary programming which has three genetic operation; selection, crossover and mutation, the predetermine controller is optimally evolved by updating simultaneously the connection patterns and weights of the neural networks. The performances of the proposed ENNC(PENNC)are compared with the one of conventional optimal controller and the conventional evolving neural network controller (CENNC) through the simulation and experimental results. And we showed that the finally optimized PENNC was very useful in the stabilization control of an IP system.

Application of multi objective genetic algorithm in ship hull optimization

  • Ship hull optimization is categorized as a bound, multi variable, multi objective problem with nonlinear constraints. In such analysis, where the objective function representing the performance of the ship generally requires computationally involved hydrodynamic interaction evaluation methods, the objective functions are not smooth. Hence, the evolutionary techniques to attain the optimum hull forms is considered as the most practical strategy. In this study, a parametric ship hull form represented by B-Spline curves is optimized for multiple performance criteria using Genetic Algorithm. The methodology applied to automate the hull form generation, selection of optimization solvers and hydrodynamic parameter calculation for objective function and constraint definition are discussed here.

An Efficient Topology/Parameter Control in Evolutionary Design for Multi-domain Engineering Systems

  • This paper suggests a control method for an efficient topology/parameter evolution in a bond graph-based GP design framework that automatically synthesizes designs for multi-domain, lumped parameter dynamic systems. We adopt a hierarchical breeding control mechanism with fitness-level-dependent differences to obtain better balancing of topology/parameter search - biased toward topological changes at low fitness levels, and toward parameter changes at high fitness levels. As a testbed for this approach in bond graph synthesis, an eigenvalue assignment problem, which is to find bond graph models exhibiting minimal distance errors from target sets of eigenvalues, was tested and showed improved performance for various sets of eigenvalues.

  • In this paper, we approach the problem of image filter design automation using a kind of intrinsic evolvable hardware architecture. For the purpose of implementing the intrinsic evolution process in a common FPGA chip and evolving a complicated digital circuit system-image filter, the design automation system employs the reconfigurable circuit architecture as the reconfigurable component of the EHW. The reconfigurable circuit architecture is inspired by the Cartesian Genetic Programming and the functional level evolution. To increase the speed of the hardware evolution, the whole evolvable hardware system which consists of evolution algorithm unit, fitness value calculation unit and reconfigurable unit are implemented by a commercial FPGA chip. The Celoxica RC1000 card which is fitted with a Xilinx Virtex xcv2000E FPGA chip is employed as the experiment platform. As the result, we conclude the terms of the synthesis report of the image filter design automation system and hardware evolution speed in the Celoxica RC1000 card. The evolved image filter is also compared with the conventional image filter form the point of filtered image quality.

Collision Prediction based Genetic Network Programming-Reinforcement Learning for Mobile Robot Navigation in Unknown Dynamic Environments

  • The problem of determining a smooth and collision-free path with maximum possible speed for a Mobile Robot (MR) which is chasing a moving target in a dynamic environment is addressed in this paper. Genetic Network Programming with Reinforcement Learning (GNP-RL) has several important features over other evolutionary algorithms such as it combines offline and online learning on the one hand, and it combines diversified and intensified search on the other hand, but it was used in solving the problem of MR navigation in static environment only. This paper presents GNP-RL based on predicting collision positions as a first attempt to apply it for MR navigation in dynamic environment. The combination between features of the proposed collision prediction and that of GNP-RL provides safe navigation (effective obstacle avoidance) in dynamic environment, smooth movement, and reducing the obstacle avoidance latency time. Simulation in dynamic environment is used to evaluate the performance of collision prediction based GNP-RL compared with that of two state-of-the art navigation approaches, namely, Q-Learning (QL) and Artificial Potential Field (APF). The simulation results show that the proposed GNP-RL outperforms both QL and APF in terms of smooth movement and safer navigation. In addition, it outperforms APF in terms of preserving maximum possible speed during obstacle avoidance.

  • A cellular automaton is well-known for self-organizing and dynamic behavions in the filed of artifial life. This paper addresses a new neuronic architecture called an evolvable celluar classifier which evolves with the genetic rules (chromosomes) in the non-uniform cellular automata. An evolvable cellular classifier is primarily based on cellular programming, but its mechanism is simpler becaise it utilizes only mutations for the main genetic operators and resmbles the Hopfield network. Therefore, the desirable bit-patterns could be obtained through evolutionary processes for just one individual agent, As a rusult, an evolvable hardware is derived which is applicable to clessification of bit-string information.
