Generation Expansion Planning (GEP) is one of the most important decision-making activities in electric utilities. Least-cost GEP is to determine the minimum-cost capacity addition plan (i.e., the type and number of candidate plants) that meets forecasted demand within a pre specified reliability criterion over a planning horizon. In this paper, Differential Evolution (DE), and Opposition-based Differential Evolution (ODE) algorithms have been applied to the GEP problem. The original GEP problem has been modified by incorporating Virtual Mapping Procedure (VMP). The GEP problem of a synthetic test systems for 6-year, 14-year and 24-year planning horizons having five types of candidate units have been considered. The results have been compared with Dynamic Programming (DP) method. The ODE performs well and converges faster than DE.

Differential evolution is an efficient algorithm for continuous optimization problems. However, applying differential evolution to solve large-scale optimization problems quickly degrades performance and exponentially increases runtime. To overcome this problem, a new cooperative coevolution differential evolution based on Spark (referred to as SparkDECC) is proposed. The divide-and-conquer strategy is used in SparkDECC.

In this paper we present Logical Evolution method which is a new teaming algorithm for the concepts expressed as binary logic function. We try to solve some problems of Inductive Learning algorithms through Logical Evolution. First, to be less affected from limited prior knowledge, it generates features using the gained informations during learning process and learns the concepts with these features. Second, the teaming is done using not the whole example set but the individual example, so even if new problem or new input-output variables are given, it can use the previously generated features. In some cases these old features can make the teaming process more efficient. Logical Evolution method consists of 5 operations which are selected and performed by the logical evaluation procedure for feature generation and learning process. To evaluate the performance of the present algorithm, we make experiments on MONK data set and a newly defined problem.

Recently the research for Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) using DNA computing with massive parallelism has been. However, there were difficulties in real biological experiments because the conventional method didn't reflect the precise characteristics of DNA when it express graph. Therefore, we need DNA sequence generation algorithm which can reflect DNA features and reduce biological experiment error. In this paper we proposed a DNA sequence generation algorithm that applied DNA coding method of evolution model to DNA computing. The algorithm was applied to TSP, and compared with a simple genetic algorithm. As a result, the algorithm could generate good sequences which minimize error and reduce the biologic experiment error rate.
In this paper, we propose a new approach that enhances the continuous optimization performance of the MAP-Elites algorithm. The existing self-referencing MAP-Elites algorithm employed the "DE/rand/1/bin" operator from the differential evolution algorithm, which, due to its lack of rotational invariance, led to a degradation in optimization performance when there were high correlations among variables. The proposed algorithm replaces the "DE/rand/1/bin" operator with the "DE/current-to-rand/1" operator. This operator, possessing rotational invariance, ensures robust performance even in cases where there are high correlations among variables. Experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithm performs better than the comparison algorithms.

The Korea Meteorological Administration provided the recent four-years records of weather dataset for our very short-term heavy rainfall prediction. We divided the dataset into three parts: train, validation and test set. Through feature selection, we select only important features among 72 features to avoid significant increase of solution space that arises when growing exponentially with the dimensionality. We used a differential evolution algorithm and two classifiers as the fitness function of evolutionary computation to select more accurate feature subset. One of the classifiers is Support Vector Machine (SVM) that shows high performance, and the other is k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) that is fast in general. The test results of SVM were more prominent than those of k-NN in our experiments. Also we processed the weather data using undersampling and normalization techniques. The test results of our differential evolution algorithm performed about five times better than those using all features and about 1.36 times better than those using a genetic algorithm, which is the best known. Running times when using a genetic algorithm were about twenty times longer than those when using a differential evolution algorithm.
In this paper the performance of meta-heuristics algorithms such as GA (Genetic Algorithm), DE (Differential Evolution), PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and SA (Simulated Annealing) for the problem of TTC enhancement using FACTS devices are compared. In addition to that in the assessment procedure of TTC two novel techniques are proposed. First the optimization algorithm which is used for TTC enhancement is simultaneously used for assessment of TTC. Second the power flow is done using Broyden - Shamanski method with Sherman - Morrison formula (BSS). The proposed approach is tested on WSCC 9 bus, IEEE 118 bus test systems and the results are compared with the conventional Repeated Power Flow (RPF) using Newton Raphson (NR) method which indicates that the proposed method provides better TTC enhancement and computational efficacy than the conventional procedure.
In this study, the three different meta-heuristics namely the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Stochastic Fractal Search (SFS), and Adaptive Differential Evolution with Optional External Archive (JADE) algorithms are examined. This study considers optimization of the planer frame to minimize its weight subjected to the strength and displacement constraints as per the American Institute of Steel and Construction - Load and Resistance Factor Design (AISC-LRFD). The GWO algorithm is associated with grey wolves' activities in the social hierarchy. The SFS algorithm works on the natural phenomenon of growth. JADE on the other hand is a powerful self-adaptive version of a differential evolution algorithm. A one-bay ten-story planar steel frame problem is examined in the present work to investigate the design ability of the proposed algorithms. The frame design is produced by optimizing the W-shaped cross sections of beam and column members as per AISC-LRFD standard steel sections. The results of the algorithms are compared. In addition, these results are also mapped with other state-of-art algorithms.
Most of sensorless algorithm are based on motor equations where it is necessary to find the phase voltage and current. However, measurement error and environmental noise deteriorate the accuracy of speed estimation of PMSM. This paper investigates speed sensorless control of PMSM for noise rejection in harsh environment. The proposed algorithm is based on the interaction between electrical parameter and random noise. The evolution strategy is used for minimizing the noise effect. The proposed algorithm is verified through simulation and experiment.
