We calculate the probability to form giant radio halos (${\~}$ 1 Mpc size) as a function of the mass of the host clusters by using a Statistical Magneto-Turbulent Model (Cassano & Brunetti, these proceedings). We show that the expectations of this model are in good agreement with the observations for viable values of the parameters. In particular, the abrupt increase of the probability to find radio halos in the more massive galaxy clusters ($M {\ge} 2{\times}10^{15} M_{\bigodot}$) can be well reproduced. We calculate the evolution with redshift of such a probability and find that giant radio halos can be powered by particle acceleration due to MHD turbulence up to z${\~}$0.5 in a ACDM cosmology. Finally, we calculate the expected Luminosity Functions of radio halos (RHLFs). At variance with previous studies, the shape of our RHLFs is characterized by the presence of a cut-off at low synchrotron powers which reflects the inefficiency of particle acceleration in the case of less massive galaxy clusters.
We aim to investigate the formation of primordial globular clusters (GCs) in the isolated dwarf galaxy (${\sim}10^{10}M_{sun}$) with cosmological zoom-in simulations. For this, we modified cosmological hydrodynamic code, GADGET-3, in a way to include the radiative heating/cooling that enables gas particles cool down to T~10K, reionization (z < 8.9) of the Universe, UV shielding ($n_{shield}$ > $0.014cm^{-3}$), and star formation. Our simulation starts in a cubic box of a side length 1Mpc/h with 17 million particles from z = 49. The mass of each dark matter (DM) and gas particle is $M_{DM}=4.1{\times}10^3M_{sun}$ and $M_{gas}=7.9{\times}10^2M_{sun}$, respectively, thus the GC candidates can be resolved with more than hundreds particles. We found the following results: 1) mini halos with the more interactions before merging into the main halo form the more stars and thus have the higher star mass fraction ($M_{star}/M_{total}$), 2) the mini halos with the high $M_{star}/M_{total}$ can survive longer and thus spiral into closer to the galactic center, 3) the majority of them spiral into bulge, but some of them can survive until the last as baryon-dominated system, like the GC.
We present a UBVI and $H{\alpha}$ photometric study of the young open cluster NGC 1893 in the outer Galaxy as part of "Sejong Open cluster Survey (SOS)" project. Using the properties of early-type stars in the photometric diagrams 65 early-type members were selected. More than 120 $H{\alpha}$ emission stars and candidates were found by $H{\alpha}$ photometry. Together with the published young stellar object catalogue and X-ray source list for this cluster, a total of 837 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars were identified in our photometric data. We obtained the mean reddening of < E(B-V) > = $0.56{\pm}0.08$ mag from the (U-B, B-V) diagram and confirmed the normal reddening law ($R_V=3.1$) toward NGC 1893 based on color excess ratios from optical to mid-infrared wavelengths. The zero-age main sequence fitting to the reddening-corrected color-magnitude diagrams gives a distance modulus of $V_0-M_V=12.8{\pm}0.1$. The age of the cluster inferred from stellar evolution models is about 1-2 Myr. We also found the Salpeter/Kroupa type initial mass function for this cluster. Finally, the mass accretion rate of 80 PMS stars with UV excess emission was estimated for the stars with masses from $0.6M_{\odot}$ to $5M_{\odot}$.
Radial color gradient of early type galaxies (ETGs) is a key tool for studying the evolution of these galaxies. In this work, we investigated whether ETGs having negative or positive color gradients show any distinguishable characteristics in the galaxy properties. We selected sample of 211 ETGs at 0.01 < z < 0.5 in the Spitzer FLS field, then we constructed u-R color gradients. We obtained the stellar mass, specific star formation rate and fluxes of emission lines of each ETG from MPA-JHU DR7 catalog. Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24 micron data were used to detect dust emission from the ETGs. Preliminary result shows that less massive galaxies are likely to have positive color gradients, which is probably due to the ongoing star formation in the galaxy core. Almost all AGNs have negative color gradients. This probably is because AGNs are located in relatively massive galaxies with little ongoing star formation. There exists a marginal difference in the percentage of galaxies with PAH emission between ETGs having positive color gradient and negative color gradient. This also supports that ETGs with positive color gradient are galaxies having enhanced star formation.
While the current consensus view holds that galaxy mergers are commonplace, it is sometimes speculated that Globular Clusters (GCs) may also have undergone merging events, possibly resulting in massive objects with a strong metallicity spread such as Omega Centauri. Galaxies are mostly far, unresolved systems whose mergers are most likely wet, resulting in observational as well as modeling difficulties, but GCs are resolved into stars that can be used as discrete dynamical tracers, and their mergers might have been dry, therefore easily simulated with an N-body code. It is however difficult to determine the observational parameters best suited to reveal a history of merging based on the positions and kinematics of GC stars, if evidence of merging is at all observable. To overcome this difficulty, we investigate the applicability of supervised and unsupervised machine learning to the automatic reconstruction of the dynamical history of a stellar system. In particular we test whether statistical clustering methods can classify simulated systems into monolithic versus merger products. We run direct N-body simulations of two identical King-model clusters undergoing a head-on collision resulting in a merged system, and other simulations of isolated King models with the same total number of particles as the merged system. After several relaxation times elapse, we extract a sample of snapshots of the sky-projected positions of particles from each simulation at different dynamical times, and we run a variety of clustering and classification algorithms to classify the snapshots into two subsets in a relevant feature space.
We present our study on a comparison of dark matter halo merger history from the runs using different numerical simulation codes. To analyze the uncertainty caused by the use of different N-body calculation methods, we compare the results from two cosmological hydrodynamic simulation codes GADGET-2 and RAMSES, which use a TreePM algorithm and the Adaptive Mesh Refinement(AMR) technique respectively. We perform cosmological dark matter-only simulations with the same parameter set and initial condition for both. The dark matter halo mass functions from two simulation runs correspond well with each other, except for lower mass haloes. The discrepancy on the low-mass haloes in turn causes a notable difference in halo merger rate, especially for the case of extremely minor merger. The result from GADGET-2 predicts that most haloes undergo more number of mergers with small haloes than that from RAMSES, independent of halo mass and environment. However, in the context of the study on galaxy evolution, such extreme minor mergers generally do not have strong effects on galaxy properties such as morphology or star formation history. Hence, we suggest that this uncertainty could be quantitatively negligible, and the results from two simulations are reliable even with only minor difference in merger history.
The HULQ project proposes to use gravitational lensing to determine the masses of QSO host galaxies, an otherwise difficult goal. If these host galaxy masses, along with their SMBH masses from single-epoch measurements, are estimated for a substantial number of QSOs at various redshifts, the co-evolution of SMBHs and their host galaxies can be studied for a large portion of the history of the universe. To determine the feasibility of this study, we present how to estimate the number of sources lensed by QSO hosts, i.e. the number of lensing QSO host galaxies (hereafter QSO lenses). SMBH masses in the literature are transformed into the velocity dispersions of their host galaxies using the M_BH -sigma relation, and in turn the Einstein radii for each QSO -source redshift combination is calculated, assuming singular isothermal spherical mass distributions. Using QSOs and galaxies as potential sources, the probability of a QSO host galaxy being a QSO lens is calculated, as a function of limiting magnitude. The expected numbers of QSO lenses are estimated for ongoing and future wide-imaging surveys, and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Wide survey is illustrated as an example.
We present a study of the metallicity of the old open cluster NGC 1245 , based on the Washington CCD photometry obtained using the 0.6 m telescope at the Sobaeksan Observatory, Korea. NGC 1245 has been known to be a unique cluster among the known open clusters in the sense that the previous metallicity estimates for this cluster are much larger $(by\;\sigma)$ than the value expected from the radial metallicity gradient of the old open clusters in Our galaxy. We have estimated the metallicity of the cluster red giants using the four color-color diagrams, obtaining a value for the mean metallicity of $[Fe/H] = -0.04\pm0.05$ dex. The total error including the error of the metallicity calibration, 0.15 dex, is 0.16 dex. The metallicity estimate of NGC 1245 we have obtained in this study is smaller than previous estimates, and is consistent with the radial metallicity gradient of the old open clusters, showing that the mean metallicity of NGC 1245 is not abnormally high. The reddening, distance, and age of the cluster have also been derived using the isochrones based on the convective overshooting models: the reddening $E(B-V) = 0.28\pm0.03$; the distance $d = 2.5\pm0.2 kpc$ (the corresponding galactocentric distance is RGC = 10.7 kpc, and the distance from the galactic plane is z = -0.4 kpc); and the age $t = 1.1\pm0.1 Gyrs$.
The four dimensional classification of globular dusters with the parameters, Z, Y, age and HB type is presented defining two new parameters. $(B-V)_{1/2}\;and\;S_{3/2}$ which are shown to be tightly correlated with Kinman's spectral types and the helium abundances obtained from the R-method, respectively. The Z- and Y- abundances are derived from $(B-V)_{1/2}\;and\;S_{3/2}$, respectively, and the latter parameters determine the age class of clusters with help of Dickens' HB type, which is a function of Z. Y and age. For the examined forty two globular clusters the computed range at Z and Y are $1.5{\times}10^{-4}{\leq}Z{\leq}4.5{\times}10^{-2}\;and\;0.23<Y{\leq}0.41$. The age difference between the oldest (HB type 1) and the youngest (HB type 7) clusters is roughly estimated to be $2-4{\times}10^9$ years. Using these four parameters the known anomalous C-M diagrams seem to be reasonably interpreted without taking into account some complicate parameters such as unusually overabundant heavy elements, mass loss and mass spread, etc. The four dimensional scheme strongly suggests the slow successive collapses of the proto-Galaxy rather than a single fast collapse, and by this slow collapse model the inversion of chemical abundance gradient in the Galaxy can be explained. It is also shown that the clump position along the RGB near the HB level removes down to the fainter magnitude as the Z(Y)- abundance increases (decreases).
We examine the morphology and luminosity distribution of a strongly warped spiral galaxy PGC 20348 by conducting a detailed BVI CCD surface photometry using BOAO 1.8m telescope. The radial surface brightness shows a break at warp radius $(r_{\omega})$ with a shallow gradient in the inner disk and a steeper gradient in the outer disk. The luminosity of east side of the disk is ${\sim}0.5$ mag fainter than the west side at r > $r_{\omega}$. The reason for the asymmetric luminosity distribution is thought to be the asymmetric flarings that result in the formation of a large diffuse region at the edge of the east disk and a smaller diffuse region at the west disk. The vertical luminosity profiles show a thick disk component whose scale heights increase with increasing galactocentric distances. The warp of PGC 20348 seems to be made by the tidal interactions with the two massive companion galaxies since the flarings and radial increase of disk scale heights are thought to be general properties of tidally perturbed disks. According to the colors of the two clumps inside the diffuse region at the edge of the east disk, they seem to be sites of active star formation triggered by tidal forces from the companion galaxies.
