This study was carried out with the view of fundamental investigating to improve the tactile and the hygroscopicity of Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers. Mono-sodium ethylene glycolate in ethylene glycol (MSEG-EG) solution was prepared and PET films were treated with it. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The tensile strength decreased with increasing decomposition ratio while density, crystallinity and crystallite size increased with increasing decomposition ratio when PET films were treated with MSEG-EG solution. 2. Number of carboxyl end groups was increased until 10-20% decomposition ratio when PET films were treated with MSEG-EG solution. However, the decomposition ratio became more than 20%, the number of carboxyl end groups had tendency to decreased. 3. The surface tension of PET films increased for treating with MSEC-EG solution. Hydrogen bonding force and poler force among the components of surface tension increased while dispersion force among those decreased. 4. The moisture region of PET films increased with increasing decomposition ratio when PET films were treated with MSEG-EG solution.
This experiment was carried out to investigate effects of DMSO or ethylene glycol as a cryopotectant and of freezing methods on survival rate of forozen-thawed rat 2-cell embryos by morphological observation. 2-cell embryos were recovered from oviducts of Sprague Dawley females mated with males of same strain on day 2 of pregnancy after inducing superovulation by intrapertioneal injection of PMSG and HCG. In slow freezing and thawing groups, embryos were frozen to -79$^{\circ}C$ or -196$^{\circ}C$ in a glass test tube containing 0.2ml PBI with 1.5M DMSO or 1.2M ethylene glycol at a rate of 0.3-1.0C/min. and thawed slowly. When samples were frozen to -79$^{\circ}C$, higher survival rate was obtained in the medium containing DMSO (43.9%) than ethylene glycol (41%). And similar result was obtained (32.5% in DMSO vs. 31.4% in ethylene glycol) when samples were frozen. In rapid freezing and thawing groups, embryos were frozen to -79 or -196$^{\circ}C$ in a glass test tube containing 0.2ml of PBI with 1.5M DMSO or 1.2M ethylene glycol by rapid cooling, and thawed rapidly. When samples were frozen to -79$^{\circ}C$, 1.5M DMSO (13.2%) was more effective than 1.2M ethylene glycol (6.1%). When the storage temperature was -196$^{\circ}C$, survival rates were 9.8% in 1.5M and 5.4% in 1.2M ethylene glycol.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of calcium and galactose treatments on ethylene productions in persimmon fruits for the study on the study of persimmon fruits. Ethylene was producted in green mature persimmon fruits treated with water, calcium and galactose after 24hrs of treatment. Ethylene productions of persimmon fiuits treated with galactose was very higher than those of persimmon fruits treated with water and calcium after 72hrs of treatment. Ethylene productions of persimmon fruits teated with water and calcium were similarly to that of persimmon fruit tested with calcium. The treatment of glucose was not effected on ethylene production of persiommn fruits. The ACC contents and ACC synthase activity in persimmon fruit treated with galactose were higher than those of other groups after 72hrs of storage, but the ACC contents and ACC synthase activity of persimmon fruits treated with calcium were lower than those of control and persimmon fruits treated with water.
Liquid crystalline (LC) poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-2(3)-chloro-1,4-phenylene terephthalate) [copoly(ET/CPT)] was prepared using poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) as a flexible spacer, terephthalic acid (TPA), and chlorohydroquinone diacetate (CHQDA). All reactions involved in the copolymerization were investigated using some model compounds: TAP was used for acidolysis, diphenylethyl terephthalate (DPET) for interchange reaction between PET chains, and 야-o-chlorophenyl terephthalate (DOCT) and di-m-chlorophenyl terephthalate (DMCT) for interchange reaction between PET and rigid rodlike segments. Activation energies obtained for the acidolysis of PET with TPA and for interchange reaction of PET with DPET, DOCT, and DMCT were 19.8 kcal/mol, 26.5 kcal/mole, and 45.9 kcal/mole, respectively. This result supports that the copolymerization proceeds through the acidolysis of PET with TPA first and subsequent polycondensation between carboxyl end group and CHQDA or acetyl end group, which is formed from the reaction of CHQDA and TPA. Also, it was found that ester-interchange reaction can be influenced by the steric hindrance. Copoly(ET/CPT)s obtained has ethylene acetate end groups formed from acetic acid hydroxy ethylene end groups and showed almost the random sequence distribution for all compositions.
ABA type block copolymers composed of poly($\gamma-benzyl$ L-glutamate) (PBLG) as the A component and poly (ethylene glycol) as the B component were obtained by polymerization of $\gamma-benzyl$ L-gletamate N -carboxyanhydride, initiated by amino groups at both ends of poly(ethylene glycol) . From circular dichroism measurements in ethylene dichloride solution as well as from infrared spectTa measurements in solid state, it was found that the polypep- tide block exists in the a-helical conformation, as in PBLG homopolymer. $Poly-N^5$ (3-hydroxypropyl glutamine) (PHPG)/poly(ethylene glycol)block copolymer hydrogel was obtained by the treatment of PBLG/PBG block copolymer with the mixture of 3-ammine-1-propanol and diamlnooctane. The water content of PHPG/PEG block copolymer hydrogel was about 80wt% when the concentration of crosslinking agent was below 5 mole % per polymer.
Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/functionalized bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers (f-BCNW) (0.1 wt%) composite nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning process and the thermomechanical properties were significantly enhanced more than the PEO and PEO/bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNW) (0.1 wt%) composite nanofibers. The functionalization of BCNW (f-BCNW) was performed by microwave plasma treatment for effects of nitrogen functionalization of chemically-driven BCNW. The N-containing functional groups of f-BCNW enhanced chemical bonding between the hydroxyl groups of the polymer chains in the PEO matrix and diameter size of PEO/f-BCNW (0.1 wt%) composite nanofibers were decreased more than PEO and PEO/BCNW (0.1 wt%) composite nanofibers on the same concentration. The strong interfacial interactions between the f-BCNW nanofillers and polymer matrix were improved the thermomechanical properties such as crystallization temperature, weight loss and glass transition temperature (Tg) compared to PEO and PEO/BCNW composites nanofibers. The results demonstrated that N2 plasma treatment of BCNW is very useful in improving thermal stability for bio-applications.
Films of Poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, were modified to impart hydrophilicity via UV irradiation. The UV irradiation treatment produced new photo-oxidized groups of carbonyl and ether groups as indicated in ATR and ESCA analysis. It was found that water contact angle decreased from $15^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ and total surface energy of PEO increased from 54.2 mN/m to 76.6 mN/m with increasing UV energy, which was attributed to significant contribution of acid base interaction of the photo-oxidized PEO rather than nonpolar interaction originating from the dominant increase in Lewis acid parameter. The increased hydrophilicity and surface energy were also proved by the decreased water wetting time.
Waterborne polyurethane as a new polymer electrolyte was synthesized by using relatively hydrophilic polyols. The morphology of polyurethane was changed as it was dispersed in water. In contrast to polyurethane ionomer, waterborne polyurethane did not form an ionic cluster but produced a binary system composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. In the colloidal system, the former and the latter existed at outward and inward, respectively. Waterborne polyurethane was prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) /poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) copolymer, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), ethylene diamine as a chain extender, and three ionization agents, 1,3-propane sultone, sodium hydride and lithium hydroxide. PEG/PPG copolymer was used for suppressing the crystallinity of PEG and N-H bond was ionized for increasing the electrochemical stability of polyurethane. Low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol dimethyl ether) (PEGDME) were used as plasticizers. DSC, FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR of the waterborne polyurethane were measured. Also, the ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes based on waterborne polyurethane and various concentrations of low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) or PEGDME were measured by AC impedance.
