Luminescent CdSe/ZnS QDs, with emission in the red region of the spectrum, were synthesized and encapsulated in poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(D,L-lactide) diblock copolymer micelles, to prepare water-soluble, bio-compatible QD micelles. PEG-PLA diblock copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of D,L-lactide, in the presence of methoxy PEG as a macro initiator. QDs were encapsulated with PEG-PLA polymers using a solid dispersion method in chloroform. The resultant polymer micelles, with encapsulated QDs, were characterized using various analytical techniques, such as UV- Vis measurement, light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic forced microscopy (AFM). The polymer micelles, with encapsulated QDs, were spherical and showed diameters in the range of 20-150 nm. The encapsulated QDs were highly luminescent, and have high potential for applications in biomedical imaging and detection.

In this study, the effects of oxygenated fuel such as ethylene glycol mono-normal butyl ether(EGBE) was investigated both DI and IDI diesel engine. Because EGBE includes oxygen content approximately 27.1 %, it is a kind of oxygenated fuel that the smoke emission of EGBE blending fuel is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel. The focus of this study was to investigate the effects of the addition of oxygenated fuel to diesel fuel on the engine-out emissions and the performance. Smoke emissions of all EGBE blends were reduced substantially in comparison with conventional diesel fuel. This study showed that remarkable reduction of smoke with oxygenate blending fuels in diesel engines including DI and IDI combustion method. Besides, this study showed that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx emissions could be achieved by oxygenated fuel and EGR method that was applied to decrease NOx emissions increasing with smoke emissions reduction.

Aerogel is a material having a nanopore structure based on a high porosity. Due to this high porosity, it has excellent properties not found in conventional materials, but its application has been limited due to low mechanical strength. Therefore, to improve the mechanical strength of the aerogel, polyurea crosslinking was introduced and a precursor having an amine group essential for polyurea polymer formation was selected to synthesize a polyurea crosslinked aerogel composite. In addition, the crosslinking of polyurea was adjusted according to the number of amine groups present in aminosilane. It was confirmed through various analyses that the nanopore structure of the aerogel was maintained to have mesopores. The aerogel thus formed was able to improve the mechanical strength by about two times, and it was confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscope analysis that a one-dimensional polymer was formed on the silica aerogel surface through the introduction of ethylene diamine. The one-dimensional polymer thus formed has improved mechanical properties, resulting in securing an elastic modulus of about 2.66 MPa.

This research was aimed to extend the vase life, improve the cut flower quality and promote flowering rate of bulbous cut Iris 'Blue Magic'. Three different concentrations of 1-MCP ranging from 250 to $750nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were treated on cut Iris flowers for the vase life elongation. Several effects of 1-MCP treatment has shown such as early flowering as one day but vase life showed no significant differences comparing to the untreated control. Flowering rate was 75% or more in the treated ones as compare to 64.2% in untreated control. Especially, in a treatment with $250nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 12 hours it showed all flowering. In many post-harvest experiments of cut flowers, ethylene production from flower organ has considered as most critical factor on vase life. Ethylene production from flower organ was measured by gas chromatography (GC) and it showed that there is no direct relation between flower longevity and emission of the ethylene gas in cut Iris. In comparison with the untreated control, ethylene generation rather seems to be increased as 1-MCP treatment increased. There was a synergy effect when 1-MCP and BA applied simultaneously in which flowering and vase life were fastened and also extended, respectively. Therefore, treatment of 1-MCP for cut Iris at flower early harvest is able to improve the flower quality both by diminishing non-flowering rate and by extended flower longevity.

$Gd_2O_3:Eu/Bi$ nanoparticles were synthesized via spray pyrolysis and applied for the preparation of a luminescent pearl pigment as an anti-counterfeiting material. The luminescence properties were optimized by changing the $Eu^{3+}$ and $Bi^{3+}$ concentration. Ethylene glycol was used as an organic additive to prepare the $Gd_2O_3:Eu/Bi$ nanoparticles. The highest emission intensity was achieved when the total dopant content was 10.0 at.% and the mole fraction of Bi was 0.1. The concentration quenching was mainly due to dipole-dipole interactions between the same activators, and the critical distances were 9.0 and $19.6{\AA}$ for $Eu^{3+}$ and $Bi^{3+}$, respectively. The prepared $Gd_2O_3:Eu/Bi$ powder exhibited an average size of approximately 82.5 nm and a narrow size distribution. Finally, the $Gd_2O_3:Eu/Bi$ nanophosphor coated on the surface of the pearl pigment was confirmed to have good red emission under irradiation from a portable ultraviolet light-emitting diode lamp (365 nm).

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions in the 2007 CAPSS (Clean Air Protection Supporting System) emissions inventory are chemically speciated for the SAPRC99 (Statewide Air Pollution Research Center 99) mechanism, following the Source Classification Code (SCC) matching method to borrow the U.S.EPA's chemical speciation profiles. CMAQ simulations with High-order Direct Decoupled Method (HDDM) are in turn applied to evaluate uncertainty in the method by comparing the simulated model VOC species to the observations in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) for a 2007 June episode. Simulations under-predicted ALK1 to ALK4 in SAPRC99 by a factor of 2 to 5 and over-predicted ALK5 by a factor of 7.5 while ARO1, ARO2, OLE1, and ethylene (ETH) are comparable to the observations, showing relative difference by 10 to 30%. OLE2 emissions are roughly 4 times overestimated. Emission rates for individual VOC model species are revised referring to the ratio of simulated to observed concentrations. Impact of the VOC emission changes on the overall ozone prediction was insignificant for the days of which 1-hr maximum ozone are lower than 100 ppb. However, simulations showed ozone difference by 5 to 10 ppb when high ozone above 120 ppb was observed in the vicinity of Seoul. This result suggests that evaluations on individual model VOC emissions be necessary to lead ozone control plans to the right direction. Moreover, the simulated ratios of ARO1 and ARO2 to $NO_x$ are roughly 50% lower than the observed ones, which imply that adjustment in $NO_x$ and VOC emission rates may be required to mimic the real VOC/$NO_x$ condition over the area.
The measured attenuation correction with transmission (Tx) scans produced quantitatively accurate images. However, it was not clear for optimal emission (Ex) and Tx scan time in PET imaging. This study was to evaluate acceptable Ex and Tx scan time by simulating clinical situations using various phantoms. Cylindrical and NEMA phantom were used for $^{18}$ F-PET scan using 2D protocol in GE Advance PETTM scanner. Cylindrical phantom was filled with 136 MBq 18F, and five regions of interests (ROI) were drawn on 23 slices. NEMA phantom had three inserts containing water, air and polytetrafluoro-ethylene (PTFE). Outside of these inserts were filled with 309 MBq of $^{18}$ F, and total 12 ROIs were drawn on 23 slices. Scans were carried out according to five Ex scan times: 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 min, and nine Tx scan times: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, and 30 min. Images were reconstructed using measured attenuation correction, and ROI analyses were performed for all images, and mean, standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation and percent errors were calculated. For cylindrical phantom study, ROI mean and SD were decreased as Ex and Tx time increased. Coefficients of variation were kept constant, when Tx was greater than 10 min. The amount of error decreased for the increment of Ex time from 10 min to 15 min was almost the same to that from 15 min to 30 min. In NEMA phantom Tx 15 min showed the lowest er개r level when the percent errors for three inserts were summed for all of the Ex times. This study suggested that Ex 15 min and Tx 15 min were acceptable as optimal scan time for the scanning protocol and the dose of radiopharmaceuticals used in these phantom study.

Europium-activated Ga$_2$O$_3$powders were prepared by modified "Pechini method" from mixed aqueous solutions of gallium nitrate, europium nitrate, ethylene glycol and citric acid. The formation process and structure of the phosphor powders were investigated by means of TG/DTA, XRD and SEM. It has been found that the phosphor powders were amorphous up to 50$0^{\circ}C$ and changed into crystalline $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$phase above $600^{\circ}C$. The resulting nano-sized powders were obtained. Red luminescence in emission spectra were observed at room temperature.
The hyaluronic acid (HA) conjugate bearing $\alpha$-cyclodextrin ($\alpha$-CD) was synthesized as the potential carrier of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-drug conjugates. The HA conjugate was prepared by the reaction between the carboxylic acid of HA and the primary amine of $\alpha$-CD in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole. The chemical structure of the conjugate was confirmed using $^1H$ NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The conjugate could form nano-sized particles in the presence of PEG by forming the inclusion complexes between $\alpha$-CD at the backbone of HA, which was demonstrated using electrophoretic light scattering and field emission transmission electron microscopy. It is anticipated that this novel kind of nanoparticles can serve as a useful delivery system for PEGylated drugs.
