  • The crystallization behaviours of poly(ethylene terephthalate) modified by 1, 3-propane diol, 1, 5-pentane diol, 1, 6-hexane diol, or poly(ethylene glycol) of molecular weight 300 as a third component were studied by isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization. When the content of the third diol was about 4 mol %, the isothermal crystallization rate at the same supercooling below the melting temperature and the nonisothermal crystallization rate at the same overheating above the glass transition temperature were increased more by the shorter flexible diol unit. On the contrary the nonisothermal crystallization rate at the same supercooling below the melting temperature was increased more by the longer flexible diol unit.

  • Using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a polymer host, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a plasticizer, potassium iodide and iodine as sources of $I^-/{I_3}^-$ PEO-PEG-KI/$I_2$ polymer gel electrolytes were prepared. Based on the polymer gel electrolytes, solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell(DSSC)s were fabricated. The content of PEG in the electrolyte was changed from 0 to 85%. The electrolyte showed self-supporting form through whole range of the PEG content. As the PEG content increased, the ionic conductivity and ${I_3}^-$ diffusivity increased and the light-to electrical energy conversion efficiency increased under irradiation of 100 $mWcm^{-2}$ simulated sunlight.

  • Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA-28)/Co-Al LDH nanocomposite membranes were prepared by solution intercalation using organically modified LDH. LDH was made organophilic by the intercalation of dodecyl sulfate (DS) anion in the interlayer. The prepared membranes were characterized using XRD, FT-IR and SEM. Gas permeability of EVA/LDH nanocomposite membranes with LDH content of 1, 3, and 5 w% was studied for $O_2$ and $CO_2$ at pressure of 3, 4, and 5 bar. The permeability of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ was minimum for nanocomposite membrane with 1 wt% LDH and increased with increasing LDH content, which is presumably due to aggregation of LDH filler. The selectivity of $CO_2$ for $O_2$ showed the maximum value at 1 wt% of LDH content and decreased thereafter.

  • Chloro isobutylene isoprene rubber (CIIR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) compounded with other formulation chemicals, depending on the polymer blend, were prepared by mechanical mixing. After manufacturing the rubber vulcanizate by compression molding with a hot press, the mechanical and thermal properties including thermal conductivity, rebound resilience of the CIIR/EPDM blends were measured. As the EPDM rubber content increased, hardness and tension set showed a tendency to increase. Pure CIIR exhibited the lowest tensile strength; however, tensile strength increased with loading of EPDM rubber. On the other hand, in CIIR rubber, which is usually a low-rebound elastomer owing to a high damping effect, rebound resilience exhibited an increasing trend as the content of EPDM rubber increased. As the EPDM rubber content increased, thermal stability was improved due to reduction of decomposition rate in the rubber region of the blend vulcanizate.

  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer made up of poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)-poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) 8/2 copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and PET were mechanically blended to pursue the liquid crystalline phase of ternary blends. Complex viscosities of blends decreased with increasing temperature and PHB content. DSC thermal analysis indicated that glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) of blends increased with increasing PHB content. Both tensile strength and initial modulus increased with raising PHB content and take-up speed of monofilaments. In the WAXS diagram, only PEN crystal reflection at 2Θ=$15.5^{\circ}C$ appeared but PET crystal reflection was not shown in all compositions. The degree of transesterification and randomness of blends increased with blending time but sequential length of both PEN and PET segment decreased.

Study on Property Change with a Fire Retardant Content in the Manufacture of Polymer Composites for Cable Sheath

  • Four different polymer compounds were manufactured to make cable sheaths for the shipping industry. Two kinds of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as the main matrix polymers and EVA-grafted maleic anhydride (EVA-g-MAH) as the coupling agent were selected for compounding with fire retardant, crosslinking agent, filler, plasticizer, and other additives. The properties of the four compounded materials were investigated with different contents of the fire retardant, silanecoated magnesium dihydroxide (S-MDH). In the rheology evaluation, the $t_{60}$ and ${\Delta}T$ values increased with increasing S-MDH contents. On the other hand, the tensile strength decreased with increasing S-MDH content due to a relative decrease in binder polymers. With increasing S-MDH content, fire resistance increased, but cold resistance showed no obvious enhancement due to the polar effect of vinyl acetate in EVA.

  • Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)(EVA) microspheres were prepared by a thermally induced phase separation. The microsphere formation occurred by the nucleation and growth mechanism in the metastable region. The diluent used was toluene. The microsphere formation and growth was followed by the cloud point of the optical microscope measurement. The microsphere size distribution, which was obtained by SEM observation and particle size analyzer, became broader when the polymer concentration was higher, the content of vinyl acetate in EVA copolymer was higher, and the cooling rate of EVA copolymer solution was lower.

  • Porous membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)/glycerol mixtures. The liquid-liquid (L-L) phase boundaries are shifted to higher temperature when the ethylene contents in EVOH increase. Moreover, the kinetic study proved that the growth of droplets formed by the general liquid-liquid (L-L) phase separation obeyed a power-law scaling relationship in the later stage of spinodal decomposition (SD). A new phase separation mechanism was presented, in which the L-L phase separation could be resulted from the crystallization. The hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The membranes showed asymmetric structures with skin layer near the outer surface, the larger pores just below the skin layer and the smaller pores near the inner surface. The effect of ethylene content (EC) in EVOH, cooling water bath temperature and take-up speed on membrane performance was investigated.

Arabidopsis thaliana의 Ethylene Triple Response Mutant에서 에틸렌 생합성 과정의 생리 생화학적 특성

  • The physiological and biochemical characterizations of the ethylene-related mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana - ethylene overproducing mutant (eto1-l) and ethylene insensitive mutants (etrl-3, ein2-l) - were detailed in this studies. Two or three week.old mature rosette leaves (before bolting) were used as the plant materials. Ethylene productions of eto1-l, etrl-3, and ein2-l mutants were about 200%, 400%, and 450% compared to that of wild type, respectively. ACC synthase and ACC oxidase activities of eto1-l mutant were similar to those of wild type. ACC content and ACC N-malonyltransferase activity, however, were 4.5 times and 3 times higher than those of wild type, respectively. SAM synthetase activity increased by 50% in eto1-l mutant plant. These results indicated that the alteration in the eto1-l mutant occured before the step of the conversion of SAM to ACe. In etrl-3 and ein2-l mutants, ACC synthase activities increased, but ACC oxidase activities decreased. ACC content and ACC N-malonyltransfcrase activity were 2 times higher than those of wild type. SAM synthetase activity in etrl-3 is similar to those of wild type, while it increased by 73% in ein2-l. These results showed that the block in ethylene action affected the autoregulation of ethylene biosynthesis, so that ACC synthase activity was not autoinhibited and ACC oxidase activity was not auto stimulated by ethylene. When the leaf tissues were used for in vitro kinase assay, a cytosolic protein (approximately 36 kDa) was phosphorylated only in eto1-l and ein2-l mutants.utants.

Mechanical Properties of Composites of HDPE and Recycled Tire Crumb (폐타이어 분말과 고밀도 폴리에틸렌 복합재료의 기계적 물성)

  • For a purpose of recycling of waste tires, composites of 10-60wt% recycled tire crumb blended with high density polyethylene(HDPE) were prepared, and their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, tensile modulus and impact strength were investigated as a function of tire crumb content. Ethylene-acrylic acid(EAA) copolymer was introduced by 10phr as a compatibilizer and the mechanical properties of the composites were measured. For the blend composition of 40wt% tire crumb content showing improved impact strength, the mechanical properties were measured by varying the EAA content of 5-15phr. All blends, whether modified or unmodified, showed a gradual improvement in impact strength as the tire crumb content increased, but the other properties decreased compared with the pure HDPE. In particular, the addition of EAA copolymer to the tire crumb content over 30wt% showed substantial improvement in impact strength. There was no significant effect of tire crumb size on impact strength of the composites.
