mathematics holds a key position among the subject-matters of school education. Nevertheless, beyond Its Instrumental one, humanity-educational value of mathematics for the general public has been under estimated. For the past fifty years, in the our country there has not been enough systematic and profound examination and discussion concerning the goals of mathematics education in order to establish the philosophy of mathematics education. Thus, in this thesis we argue how mathematics education could contribute to the humanity education. For this, we examine how western educational theorists have emphasized the value of mathematics as humanity education and how their theories have been reflected in the goals of the modern mathematics education. First of all, we discuss Platonism as a philosophical basis of the traditional mathematics teaching mainly with Euclid's "Elements" since the ancient Greece and the relationship between mathematics education and humanity education in the light of this traditional thought. Next, we examine the thoughts of Pestalozzi, Harbert, Froebel who provided the theoretical basis for the public education since 19th century, and discuss the value of mathematics teaching in their humanistic educational thoughts. Also we examine the humanistic value of mathematics education in Dewey's educational philosophy, which criticized the traditional western ethics and epistemology, and established instrumen talism. Further, we analyze how such a philosophy of mathematics teaching is reflected mathematics education of 20th century, and confirm that the formation of Dewey's rational intelligence is one of the central aims of mathematics education of late 20th century. Finally, we discuss the ideals of humanistic mathematics education ; develop ment of the rational intelligence via 'doing knowledge'and change of mind via 'looking knowledge'. In this paper identify the humanistic values of mathematics education through the historical examination of the philosophies of mathematics education, and we could find significance as a fundamental study for one of the most important problems which Korean mathematics educational society confronts, that is establishing the philosophy of mathematics education.
This study examines the effects of community child care center workers' perception of professionalism on their job satisfaction. This study conducts a survey of 221 community child care workers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon provinces in Korea. Results show that the level of perception of professionalism and job satisfaction are over intermediate. The perception on professional values and ethics are slightly higher than the perception on professional knowledge and skills. The workers are more satisfied with intrinsic job factors such as achievement and responsibility than extrinsic job factors such as compensation and working conditions. Regression analysis reveals that the workers' perception of professionalism is positively associated with both intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction. Based on the findings, this study provides suggestions to enhance the workers' professionalism and job satisfaction, which will contribute the quality of services in community child care centers.
This descriptive study was conducted to identify the attitude toward euthanasia of EMT and nursing students and to compare their attitude before and after clinical practice. The convenience sample was comprised of 40 first grade and 40 second grade EMT students attended at G college in G-city, and 40 first grade and 40 third grade nursing students attended at C college in C-province. The variable was tested with an euthanasia attitude scale developed by Kim Ae Kyoung(2001). The valid responses were obtained and analyzed by using SPSS PC+ from November 25 to December 6, 2002. The results showed that most of the respondents agreed to have positive attitude toward euthanasia in terms of client's right and client's quality of life. Also, they thought that euthanasia should be legalized and the right to die with dignity should be guaranteed. The EMT respondents having a clinical experience showed significantly higher score than respondents having no experience in the subarea of medical ethics, and nursing respondents who had a clinical practice showed significantly higher score than others no experience in the subarea of quality of life. But, the other sub-areas had no significant difference between the respondents before and after clinical practice. The attitude toward euthanasia composed of sub-areas such as being after the quality of life, having a high regard for a life and recognizing client's right was not affected by the single factor of clinical practice. Therefore, much supportive intervention need to be done for the students about the significant affecting factors found in this study like a religion, values, education and observing experience of someone's death.

Background: The aim was to determine the lifestyle behaviors and the practices for early diagnosis of cancer of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used for this study. The sample consisted of 222 patients with a diagnosis of cancer (non-random sample method). Ethical permission was obtained of the Non-interventional Research Ethics Committee of our Institution. Values of p<0.05 were accepted as statistically significant. Results: It was observed that 54.4% of the patients had never performed breast self-examination, 60.8% had never had a mammography, and 71.2% had never had a Pap smear. Sixty-six point two percent of patients had never had screening for colon cancer within the past ten years. GIS cancers were higher in smokers and ex-smokers (p=0.005), in drinkers and in ex-drinkers (p=0.000). The breast cancer rate was higher in obese people (p=0.019). Conclusions: The results of this study provide information on the healthy lifestyle behavior of cancer patients before their diagnosis, and their use of early diagnosis practices. The important aspect of this study is to extend cancer patients' period of life after the diagnosis and treatment process, to make them conscious of risky lifestyle and nutritional behavior so that they can maintain a high quality of life, and to start initiatives in this direction that would ensure changes in behavior.
This study was designed to identify nursing students' attitudes toward life through a Q-methodology. A Q-sample was formed through a review of the literature and interviews(n=160)l The final Q-sample consisted of 37 statements out of an initial 100 statements after consultation with an expert panel and pilot testing. The P-sample consisted of 14 university nursing students and 27 junior college nursing students, which was selected by convenience sampling method. Data were analyzed by the Q-analysis method. The correlation between type 2 and type 3 was relatively high (r=0.539) ; that between type 1 and type 3 was lowest (r=0.014). The first type of attitude was the “rational utilitarian” type. Students in this type valued life relative to the quality of life. They agreed with euthanasia and artificial abortion if the quality of life was threatened. The criteria for their judgement were scientific knowledge and rationality. The second type of attitude was the “Christian deontologic” type. These students appreciated the sanctity of life according to Christian dogma. They disagreed with euthanasia and artficial abortion. And they disagreed strongly that life should be created by scientific development, because only God creates life. The third type of attitude was the “unconditional deontologic” type. These students agreed with the sanctity of life, not from Christian belief but from belief in the sanctity of life. The final type of attitude was the “prima facie(conditional) deonologic” type. These students appreciated the value of life and humanity. They expressed concern for others' life and suffering. They do not want to afflict others with their own miseries. This group showed a dual value system toward themselves and others. So they experience conflict between their concern for their on and others' conditions. These nursing students' values may have been influenced by their clinical experience in hospitals and other nursing fields. Through this study, we may realize the importance of education in nursing ethics for discussion of ethical conflicts and to support ethical nursing practice.
The present study was conducted to analyze high school students' attitudes toward jean brand counterfeits relative to their self-esteem and self-consciousness. The study was implemented through a normative-descriptive survey using questionnaire. The sample consisted of 605 high school students from 6 high schools located in Seoul. Data were analyzed by mean, cluster analysis, regression, ANOVA and Duncan's test. The results were as follows: (1) As a whole, the mean values of preference and purchasing intentions toward counterfeit jeans were 2.99 and 2.83, respectively, indicating a slightly low average on the 5-point Likert scale. The results indicated that 45.5% of respondents have more than one item of counterfeit jeans. (2) Differences were found in the level of self-esteem and public self-consciousness among the three groups, who were classified by the level of purchasing intention and preference toward counterfeit jeans. Among the three groups (high/middle/low), the group having low purchasing intention and preference toward counterfeit jeans showed higher self-esteem and public self-consciousness than the other two groups. (3)Regression analysis showed that the self-esteem and public self-consciousness of high school students have an impact on the amount of purchasing of counterfeit jeans. (4)In the process of developing effective policies against the jean brand counterfeits market, it should be fully considered that high school students' purchasing intentions regarding jean brand counterfeits are related to their self-consciousness. It could be said that the policies followed to eliminate counterfeits and to enhance the consumer ethics of high school students will be more effective when those policies are accompanied by efforts to form their sound self-consciousness, especially in the areas of self-esteem and public self-consciousness.
The study aims to investigate the process of professional socialization of oriental medical students, to analyze influencing factors on it, and to compare the results with those of western medical students. Professional socialization, in the context of this study, means the process through which a layperson becomes a profession equipped with professional identity and values. A survey using specially designed questionnaire was carried out in 1999. The data were collected from 11 oriental medical colleges for 2,656 students. A total of 2,597 cases was finally included in the statistical analysis. Analysis of factors related to professional value found that oriental medical students thought highly of human-oriented factors, followed by science and status, and this trend remained unchanged as they moved on to qualification. Among professionalism related items, those involved in professional regulation and dominance factors showed high scores, while showing low scores on items related to bio-ethics and autonomy factors. Unlike items of professional value, those of professionalism showed a notable difference in attitude statistically by schooling level. The average scores of factors for professionalism increased with increasing schooling years. This trend proved that oriental medical students acquired professional norms and attitudes through their educational period. Multiple regression analysis with the factors related to professional value and professionalism as dependent variables found that independent variables had some impact on science, status, and clinical autonomy, but no impact on human, policy autonomy, and professional regulation factors. In conclusion, with increasing schooling years, professional norms and attitudes of oriental medical students were also strengthened. And, in spite of the differences in general propensity, they have a base consciousness in common with western medical students. The difference of mind-set and attitudes related to professionalism in the two groups, however, considering the necessity of future cooperative relations, indicated that a common curriculum between both schools is needed, and the education of social medicine should be strengthened in oriental medical colleges.
Background: From 2018 to 2020, the Expert Study on Public Understanding after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident (the Expert Study Group) identified and analyzed activities designed to promote public understanding of science and radiation since the Fukushima accident, and held discussions on how to achieve public understanding in the situation where public confidence has been lost, and how experts should prepare for dealing with the public. This panel session was held at the 53rd meeting of the Japan Health Physics Society on June 30, 2020. Materials and Methods: First, three subgroup (SG) leaders reported their research methods and results. Then, two designated speakers, who participated as observers of the Expert Study Group, commented on the activities. Next, the five speakers held a panel discussion. Finally, the rapporteur summarized. Results and Discussion: SG leaders presented reports from researchers and practitioners in health physics and environmental risks who provided information after the Fukushima accident. During the discussion, experts in sociology and ethics discussed the issues, focusing on the overall goals of the three groups, local (personal) and mass communication, and ethical values. Many of the activities instituted by the experts after the accident were aimed at public understanding of science (that is, to provide knowledge to residents), but by taking into account interactions with residents and their ethical norms, the experts shifted to supporting the residents' decision-making through public engagement. The need to consider both content and channels is well known in the field of health communication, and overlaps with the above discussion. Conclusion: How to implement and promote the public engagement in society was discussed in both the floor and designated discussions. Cooperation between local communities and organizations that have already gained trust is also necessary in order to develop relationships with local residents in normal times, to establish an information transmission system, and to make it work effectively.
This study analyzes Korean childcare policy from a caring democracy perspective by using the normative policy analysis method. In the midst of emergent new social risks engendered by low fertility and aging population, feminist scholars proposed a transformative paradigm shift from economic growth to caring oriented development on a macro scale but researches on how this grand principle can be reflected into each policy have hardly been discussed. Thus, this study intends to contribute to such policy-driven discussion by analysing childcare policy on the basis of three normative values of freedom, equality and justice re-interpreted by caring democracy theory. Following are key findings. First, childcare policy does not guarantee public value and social solidarity due to the limitations of free choice from the perspective of freedom. Secondly, gender and class stratification has been worsened in a multiple and more complicated way by adding generational and racial dimensions to the existing gender inequality and vicious circulation of private care is observed from equality perspective. Thirdly, structural inequality aggravated injustice previously accumulated in the past rather than providing flat ground by adjustment.
Purpose: This provides basic data for improving educational effectiveness by selecting and applying basic vocational competency applicable to dental technology's sub-major curricula by determining and researching dental technicians' awareness levels concerning the basic vocational competency's importance. Methods: 170 dental technicians working in Daegu, Korea were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire between 9 January 2018 and 23 February 2018. Results: 1. The highest level of the basic vocational competency elements by the awareness levels of importance in dental technology laboratories was shown in the occupational ethics, followed by technological skills, interpersonal skills, self-development levels, problem-solving skills, information skills, resource management skills and skills for understanding groups, communication skills, and mathematical skills. 2. Female dental technicians put relatively higher importance on writing documents and managing time, while males stressing on basic statistics. 3. Dental laboratory CEOs and managers put high values on resource management skills, while head technicians valuing information skills more. 4. The awareness levels concerning the basic vocational competency importance in some dental technology fields did not match those of the dental technology laboratories in the fields of porcelain, crown and bridge, and orthodontics. Conclusion : This study demonstrates that the awareness levels concerning basic vocational competency's importance in some fields of dental technology differ from those of dental technology laboratories. Developing a basic vocational competency curriculum, it seems necessary to find ways to increase educational effectiveness by selecting and applying the basic vocational competency for the respective fields of dental technology.
