  • To predict rolling performance for a barge-type FPSO, the evaluation of correct nonlinear roll damping is critical. The square section of FPSO causes a considerable viscous damping effect. Free roll decay tests were carried out to estimate nonlinear roll damping for a barge-type FPSO, under three different conditions. The roll motion RAO was deduced from model tests in the wave condition of the wideband spectrum. In numerical calculation, the quadratic damping was considered as equivalent linear damping, using the results of free roll decay test. Tested roll performance in the JONSWAP wave spectrum was compared with numerical results. These two results shaw good agreement, in spite of the proximity of peak wave period and roll natural period.

  • In this study, a modeling process of a 3-axis planar alignment stage is suggested. Vibration tests using a laser vibro-meter is performed to find the modeling parameters of the stage. By analyzing the result of the test, the stiffness of prismatic joints and revolute joints, as well as the contact conditions of the thrust bearings, can be calculated. The modeling of the stage was validated by comparing six normal mode shapes, which are acquired from experiments and simulations.

  • This paper presents the result of an international cooperative research on the post-correlation analysis of forced vibration tests and the prediction of earthquake responses of a large-scale seismic test structure. Through the post-correlation analysis, the properties of the soil layers are revised so that the best correlation in the responses may be obtained compared with the measured force vibration test data. Utilizing the revised soil properties as the initial linear values, the seismic responses are predicted for an earthquake using the equivalent linearlization technique based on the specified strain dependent characteristics of the shear moduli and damping ratios. It has been found that the predicted responses by the equivalent nonlinear procedure are in excellent agreement with the observed responses, which those using the initial properties are fairly off from the measured results.

  • Several types of supercapacitors have been developed for energy storage systems. Among them, the hybrid type has advantages such as a large capacitance per weight compared with the electric double-layer capacitator type. In this study, constant current charging and discharging tests were conducted for recently developed hybrid-type supercapacitors. Based on the experimental results, the capacitance and equivalent series resistance were obtained. The capacitance was larger than the designed capacitance at a low current but became small at a high current. In addition, the capacitance depended on the cell voltage. These results can be used to design an energy storage system.

  • Flexural stiffness of bridge spans has become even more important parameter since Eurocode 1 introduced for railway bridges the serviceability limit state of resonance. For simply supported bridge spans it relies, in general, on accurate assessment of span moment of inertia that governs span flexural stiffness. The paper presents three methods of estimation of the equivalent moment of inertia for such spans: experimental, analytical and numerical. Test loading of the twin truss bridge spans and test results are presented. Recorded displacements and the method of least squares are used to find an "experimental" moment of inertia. Then it is computed according to the analytical method that accounts for joint action of truss girders and composite deck as well as limited span shear stiffness provided by diagonal bracing. Finally a 3D model of finite element method is created to assess the moment of inertia. Discussion of results is given. The comparative analysis proves efficiency of the analytical method.

  • In this paper, the equivalent material properties of cellular metamaterials with different types of perforations have been presented using finite element (FE) simulation of tensile test in Abaqus commercial software. To this end, a Representative Volume Element (RVE) has been considered for each type of cellular metamaterial with regular array of circular, square, oval and rectangular perforations. Furthermore, both straight and perpendicular patterns of oval and rectangular perforations have been studied. By applying Periodic Boundary conditions (PBC) on the RVE, the actual behavior of cellular material under uniaxial tension has been simulated. Finally, the effective Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and mass density of various metamaterials have been presented as functions of relative density of the RVE

  • This paper presents the study on analysis of single phase induction motor characteristics by equivalent circuit. For high efficiency of single phase induction motor, the motor parameters used for equivalent circuit analysis is important. The accuracy of equivalent circuit analysis of motor depends on the circuit parameters like saturation factor. Therefore this paper proposed the analysis method considering saturation factor. The saturation factor was calculated by iteration routine and numerical method. this proposed method was verified by FEM analysis results and dynamo test results of the prototype model.

  • A modified space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) strategy based on vector space decomposition and its equivalent carrier-based PWM realization are proposed in this paper, which is suitable for six-phase asymmetrical dual stator induction machines (DSIMs). A DSIM is composed of two sets of symmetrical three-phase stator windings spatially shifted by 30 electrical degrees and a squirrel-cage type rotor. The proposed SVPWM technique can reduce torque ripples and suppress the harmonic currents flowing in the stator windings. Above all, the equivalent relationship between the proposed SVPWM technique and the carrier-based PWM technique has been demonstrated, which allows for easy implementation by a digital signal processor (DSP). Simulation and experimental results, carried out separately on a simulation system and a 3.0 kW DSIM prototype test bench, are presented and discussed.

  • This paper shows that a well-defined energy function can be developed to reflect the transfer conductances for multi-machine power systems under an assumption that all transmission lines have uniform R/X rations. The energy function is derived by introducing a pure reactive equivalent system for the given system. In this study, a static energy function reflecting transfer conductances is also derived as well as the transient energy function. The proposed static energy function is applied to voltage stability analysis and tested for various sample systems. The test results show that the accuracy of voltage stability analysis can be considerable improved by reflecting transfer conductances into the energy function.

  • In end milling processes, characterized by use of rotating tools, the underformed chip thickness varies periodically with the phase change of tool. In current study, as a new approach to analyse shear behaviors In the shear plane and chip-tool friction behavior chip-tool contact region during an end milling process. In this approach, an up-end milling process is transformed into an equivalent oblique cutting process. Experimental investigations for two sets of cutting tests i.e.. up-end milling and the equivalent oblique cutting test were performed to verify the presented model.
