In this study, a chair with 5 or 6 legs was designed using the commercial program CATIA V5 in order to efficiently design considering the load conditions. In addition, the stress analysis and shape optimization were carried out using ANSYS Workbench for the chair consisting of stainless steel, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys and structural steel. As a result, a chair with five legs showed the maximum equivalent stress at the end of the edge of the wheel parts and on the other hand, a chair with six legs showed the maximum equivalent stress at the corner of the connecting parts of the pillar and leg. In addition, the material and the weight was reduced by shape optimization for the chair model with 5 legs and maximum equivalent stress for stainless steel was found that greatly relaxed, compared with that of before shape optimization model.
Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) have been accepted widely as an effective lateral load resisting system. For seismic performance evaluation of a multi-story building with SPSWs, detailed finite element models or a strip model can be used to represent the SPSW components. However, such models often require significant effort for tall or medium height buildings. In order to simplify the analysis process, discrete elements for the framing members can be used. This paper presents development of a simplified equivalent braced model to study the behavior of the SPSWs. The proposed model is expected to facilitate a simplification to the structural modeling of large buildings with SPSWs in order to evaluate the seismic performance using regular structural analysis tools. It is observed that the proposed model can capture the global behavior of the structures quite accurately and potentially aid in the performance-based seismic design of SPSW buildings.

It may be inefficient to conduct the aeroelastic analysis by using full-scale conventional finite-element analyses or experiments, from the initial design phase, for an aircraft wing which can be considered as the discontinuum complex structure with composite laminated skins. In this paper, therefore more efficient aeroelastic analysis has been conducted for a box-beam typed aircraft wing by using the equivalent continuum beam-rod model which is derived from the concept of energy equivalence. Equivalent structural properties of the continuum beam-rod model are obtained from the direct comparison of the finite-element matrices of continuum beam-rod model with those of box-beam typed aircraft wing. Numerical results by the continuum beam-rod model approach are compared with those by the conventional finite-element analysis approach to show that the continuum beam-rod model proposed herein is quite satisfactory as a simplified model of aircraft wing structure for aeroelastic analyses.

In this study, an efficient analytical model for the dynamic analysis of tall buildings with a shear wall-frame structural system has been proposed. A shear wall-frame structural system usually consists of a core wall showing flexural behavior and a frame presenting shear behavior. Therefore, the deformed shape of the shear wall-frame structural system is shown by the combination of flexural mode and shear mode. These characteristics should be considered when an efficient analytical model is developed. To this end, the effect of shear wall and frame on the dynamic behavior of a tall building with a dual system has been separately investigated. In this study, the structural characteristics of a separated individual shear wall model and the frame model without shear wall has been evaluated. In order to consider the effect of the shear wall in the frame model without shear wall, a rigid body was used instead of the shear wall. Each equivalent model for the separated shear wall part and frame part has been independently developed and two equivalent models were then combined to create an efficient analytical model for tall buildings with a shear wall-frame structural system. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method, time history analyses of tall buildings with a shear wall-frame system were performed. Based on analytical results, it has been confirmed that the proposed method can provide accurate results, requiring significantly reduced computational time and memory.
The static and dynamic responses of guyed telecommunication towers can be determined by using two models, the space truss element model, and the equivalent beam-column element model. The equivalent beam-column analysis is based on the determination of the equivalent shear, torsion, and bending rigidities as well as the equivalent area of the guyed mast. In the literature, two methods are currently available to determine the equivalent properties of lattice structures, namely: the unit load method, and the energy approach. In this study, an equivalent beam-column analysis is introduced based on an equivalent thin plate approach for lattice structures. A finite-element modeling, using suitably modified ABAQUS software, is used to investigate the accuracy of utilizing the different proposed methods in determining the static and dynamic responses of a guyed tower of 364.5-meter high subjected to static and seismic loading conditions. The results from these analyses are compared to those obtained from a finite-element modeling of the actual structure using 3-D truss and beam elements. Good agreement is shown between the different proposed beam-column models, and the model of the actual structure. However, the proposed equivalent thin plate approach is simpler to apply than the other two approaches.

In this paper, a simplified vibration analysis model for bellows was presented to avoid excessive effort required for shell model. To reduce degree of freedom, bellows was modelled using one dimensional beam element. The equivalent mass and stiffness matrices were obtained based upon Guyan reduction process. The results were compared with the confirmed results, which were in good agreement.

As computer power is increased, refined finite element models are employed for structural analysis. However, it is difficult and expensive to use refined models in the design stage. The refined models especially cause problems in the preliminary design where the design is frequently changed. Therefore, simplified models are needed. The simplification process is regarded as an empirical technique. Simplified and equivalent finite element model of a structure has been studied and used in the preliminary design. A general approach to establish the simplified and equivalent model is presented. The generated simple model has satisfactory correlation with the corresponding refined finite element model. An optimization method, the Goal Programming algorithm is used to make the simple model. The simplified model is used for the design change and the changed design is recovered onto the original design. The presented method was verified with three examples.

The earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for the stability. For those purposes, recently, the performance design concept to increase the degree of absorbed energy level of structures has been proposed. One practical way of the performance design in the spatial structures is to apply the isolation system to boundary parts of roof system and sub-structure to obtain the target performance. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behavior of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify the analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behavior of roof system according to the mass and the stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.

Possibility of passive piezoelectric damping based on a new shunting parameter estimation method is studied using finite element analysis. The adopted tuning method is based electrical impedance that is found at piezoelectric device and the optimal criterion for maximizing dissipated energy at the shunt circuit. Full three dimensional finite element model is used for piezoelectric devices with cantilever plate structure and shunt electronic circuit is taken into account in the model. Electrical impedance is calculated at the piezoelectric device, which represents the structural behavior in terms of electrical field, and equivalent electrical circuit parameters for the first mode are extracted using PRAP (Piezoelectric Resonance Analysis Program). After the shunt circuit is connected to the equivalent circuit for the first mode, the shunt parameters are optimally decided based on the maximizing dissipated energy criterion. Since this tuning method is based on electrical impedance calculated at piezoelectric device, multi-mode passive piezoelectric damping can be implemented for arbitrary shaped structures.

Background: Steam explosions may occur in nuclear power plants by molten fuel-coolant interactions when the external reactor vessel cooling strategy fails. Since this phenomenon can threaten structural barriers as well as major components, extensive integrity assessment research is necessary to ensure their safety. Method: In this study, the influence of yield criteria was investigated to predict the failure of a reactor cavity under a typical postulated condition through detailed parametric finite element analyses. Further analyses using a geometrically simplified equivalent model with homogeneous concrete properties were also performed to examine its effectiveness as an alternative to the detailed reinforcement concrete model. Results: By comparing finite element analysis results such as cracking, crushing, stresses, and displacements, the Willam-Warnke model was derived for practical use, and failure criteria applicable to the reactor cavity under the severe accident condition were discussed. Conclusion: It was proved that the reactor cavity sustained its intended function as a barrier to avoid release of radioactive materials, irrespective of the different yield criteria that were adopted. In addition, from a conservative viewpoint, it seems possible to employ the simplified equivalent model to determine the damage extent and weakest points during the preliminary evaluation stage.
