  • The 4-pole linear homopolar synchronous motor (LHSM), so called linear inductor motor, is composed of the figure-of-eight shaped 3-phase armature windings, DC field windings, and the segmented secondary with the transverse bar track. To reduce the calculation time, the simplified 3D finite element model with equivalent reluctance and/or permanent magnet is presented. To obtain a clear understanding, propriety and usefulness of the developed model, we compare with the results of simplified 3D FEA, general 3D FEA and test. Consequently, the results of simplified and 3D FEM analysis are nearly identical, but much larger than that of static test at d-axis armature excitation. Therefore the improved FEA model, such as full model with half slot, is needed for the precise analysis.

  • In this paper, research on the thermal analysis method is reported for the characterization of heat generation while operating an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) for railway vehicles. Efficient cooling of the heat generated in the IPMSM is important because the excessive heat generated from the winding, core and permanent magnets increases the difficulty of continuously operating an IPMSM over long time periods. Therefore, in this study, in order to analyze the heat generation characteristics of the IPMSM for advanced research in the application of IPMSMs to cooling devices, the heat transfer coefficients for each component of the IPMSM were derived and the thermal equivalent circuit was configured to perform thermal analyses. Finally, the validation of the suggested thermal analysis method was performed through comparison with the heat experimental data of an IPMSM prototype.

  • A permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) differs from an ordinary synchronous motor in that the former has no field winding and the field flux can not be controlled by field current. A field-weakening control of PMSM utilizing the demagnetization due to d-axis armature reaction is equivalent to reducing the field current. In this paper, the armature resistance is considered for the optimum field-weakening control.

  • This paper presents the self-commissioning for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. The proposed strategy executes three tests with a standard inverter drive system. To do this, synchronous d-q axes currents are appropriately controlled for each test. From the three tests, armature resistance, armature inductance, equivalent iron loss resistance, and emf coefficient are identified automatically. The validity of the proposed strategy is confirmed by experimental results.

  • In this paper, the effect of permanent magnet overhang structure on the characteristics in Brushless DC motor has analyzed quantitatively. We classified the overhang structure as symmetric and asymmetric. 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network (EMCN) method which uses the permeance as the distributive variable is used for the efficient analysis of magnetic field. The overhang effect which increases the linkage flux at the stator is verified by comparison between overhang and no overhang structure. In addition, it is known that no load back electro motive force (EMF) is also increased due to the overhang effect. In case of asymmetric overhang structure, the ratio effect of the upper to lower overhang length on the magnetic forces is analyzed. Form the analysis results, the variation of the asymmetric overhang ratio has a significant effect on the axial magnetic force except the radial and tangential magnetic forces. The validity of the analysis results is also clarified by comparison between calculated results and measured ones such as back EMF and cogging torque.

  • To increase the retaining force, a novel design for a concentric, bi-directional, electromagnetic valve actuator that contains double-layer permanent magnets is presented in this paper. To analyze the retaining-force change caused by the magnets, an equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) model is established, while the EMC circuit of a double-layer permanent-magnet valve actuator (DLMVA) is also designed. Based on a 3D finite element method (FEM), the calculation model is built for the optimization of the key DLMVA parameters, and the valve-actuator optimization results are adopted for the improvement of the DLMVA design. A prototype actuator is manufactured, and the corresponding test results show that the actuator satisfies the requirements of a high retaining force under a volume limitation; furthermore, the design of the permanent magnets in the DLMVA allow for the attainment of both a high initial output force and a retaining force of more than 100 N.

  • For permanent magnet brushless DC motors used for high speed fuel pumps, torque ripple is an important origin of vibration, acoustic noise and speed fluctuation. In this paper, the output torque profile of a PM motor with one phase energized is decomposed into the commutation torque, the reluctance torque and the armature reaction torque according to their source origins. It verifies that the output torque profile is qualitatively equivalent to the BEMF profile for low reluctance motors. This paper discusses the effect of magnet pole shaping and magnet arc length on the output torque and torque ripple. A magnet edge shaping is proposed to design a trapezoidal BEMF motor without torque ripple, with minimal sacrifice of the maximum output torque.

  • In this paper, a novel stator hybrid excited doubly salient permanent magnet (SHEDS-PM) brushless machine with a special magnetic bridge is proposed for the first time. The originality of this machine is purposely to add a magnetic bridge in shunt with each PM pole, which not only maintains the stator lamination in its entireness, but also amplifies the effect of DC field flux on PM flux. An equivalent magnetic circuit is presented to clarify the novelty. Based on the 2-D finite element analysis, the static characteristics of the SHEDS-PM machine, namely phase flux linkage, back-EMF, cogging torque, winding inductance and static torque are deduced. The corresponding results on a prototype machine illustrate that the proposed machine is promising for application to electric vehicles.

  • This paper presents a neural network based adaptive dead-time compensation strategy for an inverter fed permanent magnet synchronous motor drive. The neural network is used for identifying the dead-time compensation time (DTCT) that includes an equivalent dead-time, turn-on/off time and on-state voltage components of the voltage source inverter. In order to train the neural network, desired DTCTs for eight operating points are prepared as training data. The trained neural network can identify a desired DTCT for any operating point because it has the capability of the interpolation. The accuracy of the identified DTCT is experimentally confirmed by comparing the calculated active power with a measured one.

  • In order to overcome the manufacturing difficulty of the transverse-flux permanent magnet linear motor (TFPMLM) and enhance its performance much better, a novel TFPMLM with E-core and 3 dimension (3D) magnetic structures is proposed in this paper. Firstly, its basic structure and operating principle are presented. Then the equivalent 2D configuration of the TFPMLM is transformed, so that the Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) mapping method can be used to analyze the motor. Furthermore, the air gap flux density distribution is solved by SC mapping method, based on which, the EMF waveform, no-load cogging force waveform and load force waveform are obtained. Finally, the prototyped TLPMLM is manufactured and the results are obtained from the experiment and 3D FEM, respectively, which are used to compare with those from SC mapping method.
