The steel ribs which are used to enhance the supporting capability of the shotcrete are estimated to be very effective, but their characteristics depending on the types of steel support are not well understood enough to be considered in the design stage. This paper describes the behavior of the shotcrete reinforced by various types of steel supports. Through flexural toughness test, major strength parameters such as flexural tensile strength, equivalent flexural tensile strength and residual tensile strength were obtained and used in the numerical analyses. Test results show that steel rebar was not as dependable as H-beam or lattice girder but close examination of the test results revealed that the specimen was failed in shear because of the shorter span than desired. Therefore tests on the properly dimensioned specimens are necessary for valid evaluation of the steel rebar reinforced shotcrete. In the first set of numerical stability analyses, shotcrete and steel supports were modelled separately. Then compared with the second set of analyses in which shotcrete and steel supports were regarded as a composite material. The two results coincided reasonably and this equivalent model turned out to be useful.
In flexural strength design of unconfined reinforced concrete (RC) members, the concrete compressive stress-strain curve is scaled down from the uni-axial stress-strain curve such that the maximum concrete stress adopted in design is less than the uni-axial strength to account for the strain gradient effect. It has been found that the use of this smaller maximum concrete stress will underestimate the flexural strength of unconfined RC members although the safety factors for materials are taken as unity. Herein, in order to investigate the effect of strain gradient on the maximum concrete stress that can be developed in unconfined flexural RC members, several pairs of plain concrete (PC) and RC inverted T-shaped specimens were fabricated and tested under concentric and eccentric loads. From the test results, the maximum concrete stress developed in the eccentric specimens under strain gradient is determined by the modified concrete stress-strain curve obtained from the counterpart concentric specimens based on axial load and moment equilibriums. Based on that, a pair of equivalent rectangular concrete stress block parameters for the purpose of flexural strength design of unconfined RC members is determined.

Addition of steel fiber to shotcrete is to improve the brittleness of concrete. Quality of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete can be evaluated by quantitive analysis of toughness characteristics after cracking. The toughness characteristics can be expressed by absolute value of energy absorption capacity, non-dimensional toughness index related to the energy absorption capacity, and equivalent flexural strength at arbitrary deflection. In this study, merits and demerits of flexural toughness by RTA round panel of Australia and other specifications have been analyzed.

Steel set is a structure that stabilize the NATM tunnel until the installation of shotcrete, and it is combined after the shotcrete is installed to improve stability. In this study, determination approach for the equivalent elastic modulus of shotcrete-lattice girder composite is newly suggested for tunneling simulation. Also, a method was presented to calibrate the equivalent elastic modulus through the comparison of the full 3D model and equivalent model. When the conventional equivalent elastic modulus is used for shotcrete-lattice girder composite, the flexural strength of equivalent model is 130% smaller than that of full 3D model. Equivalent elastic modulus is adjusted considering the error of flexural strength. It is found that the error of flexural strength obtained from adjusted equivalent model using adjusted equivalent elastic modulus is reduced less than 1%.

From the early 1980s, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) has been developed as a one of the standard tunneling method in Korea. Approximately 10 years ago, wet-mix shotcrete with sodium silicate accelerator (waterglass) was introduced and widely used to tunnel lining and underground support. However, this accelerator had some disadvantages due to the decrease of long-term strength compared to plain concrete (without accelerator) and low quality of the hardened shotcrete. In order to compensate for these disadvantages, recently developed alkali-free accelerator has been successfully demonstrated in numerous projects and applications as a new material to make tunnels more durable and safer. An experimental investigation was carried out in order to verify the strength behavior of wet-mix Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) with alkali-free accelerator. Compressive strength, flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength were measured by testing specimens extracted from the shotcrete panels. From the results, wet-mix SFRS with alkali-free accelerator exhibited excellent strength improvement compared to the conventional shotcrete accelerator.

Shotcrete is NATM technique after tunnel excavation as major tunnel support for ground stability, curtail of execution period and reduction of execution expenses instead of general lining method. It is trend using constantly shotcrete lining. This high-strength shotcrete is require to use as constantly shotcrete lining. This brought out the solution of environmental pollution and harmfulness about human. Accordingly, in this study Specimens of strength measurement was made to develop shotcrete possible to develop in early materials with Cement Mineral Accelerator as NATM method construction. It's compared with existing shotcrete material, Unconfined Compression test, flexural strength test were experimented. The fish poison test was experimented to evaluate an influence of environment. On results of test, Unconfined Compressive Strength and flexural strength was equivalent with 28-day strength of existing material. On results of fish poison evaluation research subject material was founded environmentally friendly for existing shotcrete.
Seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures requires a certain minimum level of flexural ductility. For example, Eurocode EN1998-1 directly specifies a minimum flexural ductility for RC beams, while Chinese code GB50011 limits the equivalent rectangular stress block depth ratio at peak resisting moment to achieve a certain nominal minimum flexural ductility indirectly. Although confinement is effective in improving the ductility of RC beams, most design codes do not provide any guidelines due to the lack of a suitable theory. In this study, the confinement for desirable flexural ductility performance of both normal- and high-strength concrete beams is evaluated based on a rigorous full-range moment-curvature analysis. An effective strategy is proposed for flexural ductility design of RC beams taking into account confinement. The key parameters considered include the maximum difference of tension and compression reinforcement ratios, and maximum neutral axis depth ratio at peak resisting moment. Empirical formulae and tables are then developed to provide guidelines accordingly.
Replacement of actual stress distribution in a reinforced concrete (RC) flexural member with a simpler geometrical shape, which maintains magnitude and location of the resultant compressive force, is an acceptable conceptual trick. This concept was originally perfected for normal strength concrete. In recent years, high strength concrete (HSC) has been introduced and widely used in modern construction. The stress block parameters require updating to account for special features of HSC in the design of flexural members. In future, more varieties of concrete may be developed and a corresponding design procedure of RC flexural members will be required. The usual practice is to conduct large number of experiments on various sizes of specimen and then evolve an empirical relation. This paper presents a numerical procedure through which the stress block parameters can be numerically derived for a given strain ratio variation. The material model for concrete is presented and computational procedure is described. This procedure is illustrated with several variations of strain ratio. The advantages of numerical procedure are that it costs less and it can be used with new material models for any new variety of concrete.
In this paper, a new hybrid fiber system (NHFS) is investigated for the application of slab. The steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) whisker is added to form NHFS. The four-point bending test is carried out on the flexural properties of slab with plain, steel fiber, traditional hybrid fiber system (THFS) and NHFS reinforced cementitious composites. The flexural behavior is evaluated by ASTM C1018-97, JCI-SF4 and post-crack strength (PCS) technique. The evaluation parameters of flexural toughness such as toughness index (TI), equivalent flexural strength (EFS) and PCS are determined. The size of slab specimens is $15mm(thickness){\times}50mm(width){\times}200mm(length)$. The results show that adding $CaCO_3$ whisker to THFS can significantly improve the flexural strength, TI, EFS, PCS of the slab. The empirical relation between reinforcing index ($RI_v$) and flexural parameters show that flexural parameters of slabs increase first and then decrease; which indicates that optimum $RI_v$ values can be helpful in the considering the mix design of steel-PVA fibers-$CaCO_3$ whisker composites for achieving the desired flexural-related properties. The scanning electron microscopy is performed to observe the micro-morphological characteristics of the fracture surface, which proved the positive hybrid effect among the different fibers in cementitious composites. The NHFS can arrest the generation and propagation of the crack from micro to macro level.
This paper deals with a comparative study among three different rehabilitation techniques, namely, (i) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), (ii) glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) and (iii) ferrocement on the flexural strengthening of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beams. As these different techniques have to be compared on a level playing field, tensile coupon tests have been carried out initially for GFRP, CFRP and ferrocement and the number of layers required in each of these composites in terms of the tensile strength. It was found that for the selected constituents of the composites, one layer of CFRP was equivalent to three layers of GFRP and five layers of wiremesh reinforcement in ferrocement. Rehabilitation of RCC beams using these equivalent laminates shows that all the three composites performed in a similar way and are comparable. The parameters selected in this study were (i) the strengthening material and (ii) the level of pre-distress induced to the beams prior to the rehabilitation. It was noticed that, as the levels of pre-distress decreases, the percentage attainment of flexural capacity and flexural stiffness of the rehabilitated beams increases for all the three selected composites used for rehabilitation. Load-deflection behavior, failure modes, energy absorption capacity, displacement ductility and curvature ductility were compared among these composites and at different distress levels for each composite. The results indicate that ferrocement showed a better performance in terms of ductility than other FRPs, and between the FRPs, GFRP exhibited a better ductility than the CFRP counterpart.
