  • Friction and wear behavior of a unidirectional high modulus carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite exposed to high and low humidity was experimentally examined with various sliding speeds. The results show that the moisture at the sliding surface greatly influences friction and wear properties of the composite. It is also discoverd that the difference in friction and wear behavior between samples with different fiber orientations is mainly due to the anisotropic properties caused by the microstructure of oriented graphite crystals in the carbon fibers and the macrostructure of fiber orientation in the matrix.

  • Amino terminated polyetherimide(ATPEI) has been synthesized by bisphthalic anhydride arid m-phenylenediamine, after that characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). Fourier transform (FT-IR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography(GPC). ATPEI was blend to improve the toughness of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin which was cured by nadic methyl anhydride(NMA). The fracture toughness and the molphology of the toughened epoxy resin was evaluated. The toughness of ATPEI modified epoxy resin was higher than that of the PEI modified epoxy resin. In addtion, carbon fiber/ATPEI modified epoxy resin composites were fabricated and the mechanical properties of the resulted composites were investigated.

  • In this paper the influence of fiber orientation of basalt and carbon inter-ply fabrics on the flexural properties of hybrid composite laminates was experimentally investigated. Four types of basalt/carbon/epoxy inter-ply hybrid composite laminates with varying angle ply orientation of reinforced basalt fiber and fixed orientation of carbon fiber were fabricated using hand lay-up technique. Three point bending test was performed according to ASTM 7264. The fracture surface analysis was carried out by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results obtained from the four laminates were compared. Lay-up pattern of $[0B/+30B/-30B/0C]_S$ exhibits the best properties in terms of flexural strength and flexural modulus. Scanning electron microscopy results on the fracture surface showed that the interfacial de-bonding between the fibers and epoxy resin is a dominant fracture mode for all fiber lay-up schemes.

  • Nondestructive damage sensing and mechanical properties for acid-treated carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique and acoustic emission (AE). Carbon black (CB) was used to compare to CNT and CNF. The results were compared to the untreated case. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) relating to electrical resistivity under double-matrix composites test. Sensing for fiber tension was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic strain. The sensitivity for fiber damage such as fiber fracture and fiber tension was the highest for CNT/epoxy composites. Reinforcing effect of CNT obtained from apparent modulus measurement was the highest in the same content. For surface treatment case, the damage sensitivity and reinforcing effect were higher than those of the untreated case. The results obtained from sensing fiber damage were correlated with the morphological observation of nano-scale structure using FE-SEM. The information on fiber damage and matrix deformation and reinforcing effect of carbon nanocomposites could be obtained from electrical resistivity measurement as a new concept of nondestructive evaluation.

  • The fracture toughness of three different kinds of epoxy-matrix composites containing the same volume fraction of reinforcement and the variation of fracture toughness of glass-carbon fiber/epoxy hybrid composites due to the change of test temperature and different glass fiber content were investigated in this study. Glass fiber/epoxy composite provided much higher fracture toughness than that of other composites because of the high strain at failure of glass fiber. Particularly the carbon fiber/epoxy composite exhibited the low fracture toughness caused by the low strain energy absorbing capacity of carbon fiber. And it was found that the strain at failure of reinforcement and interfacial delamination absorbing a significant amount of impact energy played an important role to increase fracture toughness of composites. The fracture toughness of the glass-carbon fiber hybrid composites increased with increasing the glass fiber content and decreased with raising the test temperature. The residual stress arising from the different thermal expansion between the matrix and reinforcement influenced the fracture toughness of composites.

  • Drop weight impact tests were performed to investigate the impact behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates reinforced by short fibers and other interleaving materials. Characterization techniques, such as cross-sectional fractography and scanning acoustic microscopy, were employed quantitatively to assess the internal damage of some composite laminates. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe impact damage and fracture modes on specimen fracture surfaces. The results show that composite laminates experience various types of fracture; delamination, intra-ply cracking, matrix cracking and fiber breakage depending on the interlayer materials. Among the composite laminates tested in this study, the composites reinforced by Zylon fibers showed very good impact damage resistance with medium level of damage, while the composites interleaved by poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEEA) film is expected to deteriorate the bulk strength due to the reduction of fiber volume fraction, even though the damaged area is significantly reduced.

  • In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of the friction coefficient and wear area change of carbon/epoxy and E-glass/epoxy composites depending on the fiber direction (0°/90°). We compared the results of the case where the sliding direction is parallel to the fiber direction (0°) with that of the case where it is perpendicular to the fiber direction (90°). The ball-on-plate wear test equipment was used to cause wear in both directions. Two types of specimens were prepared with thicknesses of 3 mm-one made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite (CFRP) and the other of glass fiber reinforced plastic composite (GFRP). A normal force of 20 N was applied to the specimen and the sliding speed was 10 mm/s and the sliding distance was set to 20 m to perform the wear test. The CFRP demonstrates superior tribological characteristics compared to the GFRP. This outcome is attributed to graphitization of carbon, which serves as solid lubricating particles. In addition, both CFRP and GFRP are worn more in the 90° direction than in the 0° direction. This is due to the greater occurrence of fiber breakage and separation in the 90° direction than in the 0° direction. This study is expected to be utilized as basic data for understanding the friction and wear characteristics of CFRP and GFRP composites along the fiber direction and to apply the appropriate material.

  • In this study, the variation of fatigue strength in CF/PEEK and CF/EPOXY, the matrix and interfacial strength of which differ from each other, has been studied from the viewpoint of microfracture behavior. The results obtained are as follows; According as the fatigue strength moves from the lower cycle range to the higher cycle range, that of CF/PEEK shows higher curve than that of CF/EPOXY does. In the early stage of fatigue life, the characteristic of fatigue crack in CF/PEEK is mainly the fracture of longitudinal fiber, while that in CF/EPOXY is the fracture of transverse fiber. The difference of fatigue strength in these materials can be explained by the fracture criteria of transverse fiber and longitudinal fiber.
