The epilithic algal communities on the artificial substrata (unglazed ceramic tiles) were investigated from 5th July to 24th July 1999 with two or three days intervals for elucidating the effects of the experimental acidification. They were harvested inside the mesocosm with and without the acid treatment on Togyo reservoir within the Civilian Passage Restriction Line near Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea. After the colonization of epilithic algal community, their standing crops revealed different patterns outside and inside the mesocosm. However the time lapse of 5 days was observed on the inside with acid treatment. The dominant species were different: Achnanthes minutissima was outside but Coenochloris polycocca was inside and inside with acid treatment. The differences in floral composition were also found. Achnanthes minutissima which has been the most important species in the colonization by the epilithic algal community of the mesocosm was less important at the lower pH. Coenochloris polycocca is a species well adapted to low pH.
Patterns of epilithic algal colonization on artificial substrata (unglazed ceramic tiles) were investigated from 23rd April to 3rd July 1999 at weekly intervals over a 10 weeks period outside and inside the mesocosm in Togyo reservoir within the Civilian Passage Restriction Line near Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea. The highest standing crops of epilithic algae was 1,798$\cdot$10³ cells$\cdot$$cm^{-2}$ outside the mesocosm on 26th June and also inside the mesocosm those was 2,391$\cdot$10³ cells$\cdot$$cm^{-2}$ on 26th June, 9 weeks after the experiment began. The dominants outside the mesocosm were Achnanthes minutissima, Navicula bicephala, Oscillatoria angusta, Synedra delicastissima, S. tenuissima, S. ulna v. danica and Tabellaria flocculosa, and those inside the mesocosm were Achnanthes minitissima, Coenochloris polycocca, Fragilaria crotonenesis, Peridinium cinctum, Synedra delicatissima, Tabellaria flocculosa and Ulothrix subtilissima. Diatoms were most abundant and Achnanthes minutissima was the most important species colonizing on the tiles. Chlorophyll-a content was highest value of 5.4 mg$\cdot$$m^{-2}$ on 19th June after 8 weeks growth outside the mesocosm and was 24.4 mg$\cdot$$m^{-2}$ on 26th June, 9 weeks after the experiment began on tiles inside the mesocosm. It was also shown that unglazed ceramic tiles were a more suitable substratum for colonization than the glass slides. Consequently the substratum selection plays an important role in the colonization by the epilithic algal community.
This study investigated the temporal and spatial dynamics of an epilithic algal community in the Hantan River in November 2001, February, May and August 2002. It was identified a total of an epiphlithic 301 taxa which were composed of 275 species, 16 varieties and 10 unidentified species. The standing crops ranged between 598,600-16,525,200 cells $\cdot$$cm^2$ and showed the temporal and spatial variations, A higher value was found at the lower station than the upper station in winter, but a higher value was found at the upper station than the lower station in summer due to the effects of typhoons. Chlorophyll concentrations ranged between 13.4-304.2 ${\mu}g$$\cdot$$cm^2$. Standing crops and chlorophyll showed similar trends in autumn and winter, but temporal dynamics were not apparent in the overgrowth of Lyngbya, Schizothrix and so others in Cyanophyceae in spring and summer. They were composed of species in Chlorophyceae-Bascillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae and no seasonal effect was detected. Low diversity index values probably indicated the effects of environmental stresses (water temperature, flow and current velocity) other than organic pollution. An assessment of organic pollution using epilithic diatoms (DAIpo) showed $\alpha$-oligosaprobic states at the upper- and mid- stations, and $\alpha$-mesosaprobic states at the lower- stations.
The composition of phytoplankton and periphyton community in Togyo reservoir was investigated. A total of phytoplankton was composed of 150 taxa, belonging to 6 phyla, 8 classes, 15 orders, 5 suborders, 31 families, 71 genera, 106 species, 14 varieties, 1 form and 29 unidentified species. The observed number of diatoms and green algae were much higher than others. Within diatoms the pennate diatoms appeared more than centric diatoms and solitary forms or colonial forms appeared more than filamentous forms in green algae. A total of epipelic algae was composed of 125 taxa, belonging to 3 phyla, 3 classes, 6 orders, 3 suborders, 13 families, 30 genera, 87 species, 29 varieties, 2 forms and 7 unidentified species. The diatoms appeared much more than others. Among those, the pennate diatoms dominated the centric diatoms in species number observed. A total of epilithic algae was composed of 114 taxa, belonging to 4 phyla, 4 classes, 11 orders, 3 suborders, 22 families, 38 genera, 79 species, 8 varieties, 1 form and 26 unidentified species. The observed number of diatoms and green algae were much higher than others. Within diatoms the pennate diatoms dominated the centric diatoms in species number observed. The dominance of pennate diatoms of the diatom community in the epipelic algal community and the epilithic algal community could be assumed that was due to the presence of raphe structure of pennate diatoms.
The abundance and community structure of epilithic diatoms grown on different substrata were investigated in two first-order streams located in a limestone and granite area, north of the Suzuka Mountains in Central Japan. Experiments were conducted as follows: limestone and granite without algae were submerged in their own streambed or another stream station and incubated for seven weeks, while limestone and granite with algae were transferred to another stream station and incubated at the same time. The diatom biomass was consistently high in the lime-stone station experiments compared to those at the granite station. In addition, there was more diatom biomass on granite substrata than on the limestone substrata at both stations. The present results suggested that the difference in water chemistry including the major nutrient concentrations was the limiting factor for algal growth in these two streams; however, when the water chemistry was the same in each stream, the difference in substratum characteristics became the important factor affecting the diatom abundance. The diatom community grown on the transferred substrata with and without algae became similar to those grown on the original substrata in each stream during the incubation period. It was suggested that the effect of the substrata characteristics on the diatom community structure was rather small.
The purpose of the study is to understand the ecological characteristics of the early stage of community formation of epilithic diatoms. The samples were daily collected from a site of the Kumho River during 70 days from October 13 to December 21 in 2002. Total 126 diatom taxa collected in the study were classified into 114 species and 12 varieties belonging to 26 genera. About 80% of the taxa collected from the artificial substrata during the whole studying period were observed until tenth day from the start time of the study. In the study the successional process of the diatom community was divided into the three stages of the early, the middle and the later by cluster analysis based on the similarities in species composition among the communities. Cocconeis placentula Ehrenb. and C. placentula var. lineata (Ehrenb.) V.H., horizontally positioned species, would be divided into the early successional species, and Diatoma vulgre Bory, vertically positioned species, was the later successional species. Cell densities and species composition of the diatoms on the artificial substrata were closely similar to them of natural substrata after 40th day from the start time of the study.
At the estuaries of Bonggang and Miryong streams in the Korean southern coast, the spatiotemporal distribution and habitat environment of a nerite snail, Clithon retropictum (Gastropoda: Neritidae), which has been assigned as a legally protected species of Korea, were explored. Physicochemical environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, tidal level distribution as well as biotic environments (chlorophyll-a concentration and epilithic microalgae composition) were monitored every month. The relationships between the environmental factors and spatiotemporal distribution of the nerite snail population were analyzed. Water temperature, salinity, and water level varied by season and lunar tidal rhythm. The spatiotemporal distribution of the nerite snail was mostly related to water salinity. Among epilithic algae which were the priority prey of snails, blue-green algae and green algae dominated in summer and autumn, while diatoms predominated during winter and spring. Chlorophyll-a concentration was highly and positively correlated with the population density of the nerite snail. The correlation coefficients were different depending on the taxon (Family) of epilithic algae. The mean population density was 302.2 inds m-2 and 271.8 inds m-2 in Bonggang Stream and Miryong Stream, respectively. The egg capsules of the nerite snail in the two habitats were observed from March (in Bonggang Stream) or April (in Miryong Stream) to August, and newly hatched juveniles recruited in the habitats from August were assessed with regard to frequency distributions of shell width. The occurrence of large-sized snails in upper stream reaches of both Bonggang and Miryong indicated the movement of spats from the mouth to the upper reaches during the whole life cycle.

Population ecology of Palmaria palmata is described from the intertidal zone of Digby Neck and adjacent islands of Nova Scotia. The primary objectives were: to evaluate the difference in habitat specialization and population structure of P. palmata between harvest and non-harvest shores, and to characterize differences in thallus structure and frond sizes between epilithic and epiphytic populations. Harvest shores were gently sloping boulder fields with boulders typically about 0.5-1.0 m with dense cover of P. palmata on many of the rocks. Non-harvest shores (with or without P. palmata) consisted of boulders that were smaller or larger than harvest shores, or bedrock; when P. palmata was present on nonharvest sites it was typically epiphytic on other algae (e.g., Fucus spp., Mastocarpus stellatus, Devaleraea ramentacea). Harvestable epiphytic populations occurred only in high current areas. While there was little difference in average cover of P. palmata harvest and non-harvest shores ($31.2{\pm}13.7%$ vs. $19.4{\pm}7.3%$, mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation [SD]), the cover of P. palmata on harvest shores was highly skewed such that individual boulders often had >90% cover while adjacent rocks had little. Frond length of large fronds was greater on harvested shores, and mean frond density ($g\;m^{-2}$) was three times higher than the mean density on the non-harvested shores. Frond lengths of entire epiphytic and epilithic frond complements of 119 thalli from harvest beaches showed no difference in mean size of the largest fronds, and no difference in frond number per holdfast when epiphytic and epilithic thalli were compared.
The dynamics of physico-chemical factors and biomass of epilithic attached algae was determined by bimonthly sampling in the Kyechon and Yudongchon situated in the upper part of Som River from March 1998 to February 1999. Among environmental factors, average of $NH_4$, $NO_3$, SRP and SRSi concentration ranged $8.9{\sim}86.6{\mu}g$ N/l, $663.9{\sim}2,018.1{\mu}g$ N/l, $0{\sim}15.0{\mu}g$ P/l and 1.6~2.6 mg Si/l, respectively. The contents of chlorophyll-a and organic matter per unit area, which ranged from 21.1 to 231.8 $mg/m^2$ and ranged from 5.2 to 52.6 $g/m^2$, respectively, showed very high in the spatial and temporal variations. Both were high in February and May and low in March seasonally. The fluctuation of epilithic biomass related the concentration of $NH_4$, SRP and current velocity. In relationship between biomass and current velocity, >200 and 100~200 mg chl-a/$m^2$ corresponded to <0.2 and <0.8 m/s, respectively. The evaluation of water quality with chl-a and organic matter of periphyton resulted on over eutrophic condition. Periphytic algae in a small stream were more effective as indicator of water quality than planktonic algae. More researches on periphytic algae in relation to water quality evaluation are needed.
To study the influences of thermal effluents flowing from hot spring on epilithic algal community, seasonal survey was carried out at stream and its watersheds from Seokjeong hot spring in Chollabuk-Do, Korea. Totally 7 points were divided into three regions fur sampling of water and epilithic algae, such as the direct effected, uneffected and the mixed region, respectively. At the discharging points of effluents, a dark-green cyanobacterial mat were remarkably constructed, mainly by two cyanobacteria, Oscillatoria and Phormidium. The mat formation were more obvious at low temperature than any other season, and even result in disappear with downstream and season. Totally, one hundred and fifty-three taxa of epilithic algae were classified with 15 unidentified species. Among the, diatoms occupied 58% of total species, whereas cyanobacteria was 67% of total biomass, comparatively. In terms of stream direction, relative abundance of cyanobacteria was only limited in the upstream in cold season, and result in this pattern disappeared with season change. Although all physicochemical variables at the discharging points, was very high, compare to other points, they were quickly decreased downstream. Among them, some heavy metals were not detected or below the detection levels at downstream. Nitrate nitrogen increased with downstream, as well as phosphorus and sulfate have a similar trend throughout, while ammonia quickly decreased in the initial period of discharging effluents. This suggest that although the thermal effluent with high temperature and organic compounds could polluted the small study stream, various contributions such as flowing water, intake of uneffected streawater and collaboration of cyanobacterial mat and stream bottom gradually induces a stable water system.
