The consciousness of environmental education has increased for the last decades, and schools make efforts for education in the systematic environment. To keep pace with trends such as the open school and the open class, students, teachers and parents are actively participating in environmental education programs. Parents' active participate in environmental education programs will provide excellent basis to operate environmental education efficiently and advise fruitful operation of environmental education programs. In addition, as parents play an important role of deciding the students' life habits or attitudes about environment, their participation is greatly meaningful. This study was conducted to 203 fourth and fifth graders in M elementary school in Ulsan city that operated the model school for protecting the forest from March to December, 2009 and their parents in order to examine the effects of parents' participation in environmental education programs, and the results are as follows. First, the student group with parents who participated in environmental education programs showed higher interest in surrounding environment of the school. Second, the student group with parents who participated in environmental education programs showed higher environment sensitiveness and environmental practice intention. Third, the parent group who participated in environmental education programs showed higher environmental sensitiveness and environmental practice intention. Fourth, the parent group who participated in environmental education programs showed higher satisfaction about the program. As the result of the study, environmental education programs with parents' participation attracted their active interest and participation about school environment problems, and a lot of conversation and attention between students and parents who participated in environmental education programs improved the students and their parents' environmental sensitiveness and environmental practice intention.
Nowadays environmental education is getting important. So, it is necessary to teach for students to realize the protection environment. Therefore, in this study, environmental teaming was planned and practiced for high school 'Ecology & environment' class by e-PBL. Self-directed teaming, collaborative teaming and performance assessment are emphasized in the 7th educational curriculum. The PBL is efficient learning model for them. This study designed for a teaching and teaming method and strategies using PBL based upon the theories and practices. This study will also develop an e-learning. As a result, it is indicated that the teaching and learning method using PBL has the positive effects on learning that the development of self-directed learning and collaboration teaming Is observed by reflect journal and presentation of students. e-PBL is a teaming model for learning-centered that adapted many school and subject. Therefore e-PBL makes full use of be 'Ecology & environment' class and environmental education.
Since 1985, the Ministry of Environment have supported environment conservation model schools (ECMS) to promote more structured and effective environmental education in schools. For driving ECMS to playa central role for sustainable schools in the community in Korea, international trends in foreign environmental education model schools need to be analysed in addition to overall evaluations of the present status. Eco-school related initiatives as whole-school approaches in other countries include Eco-Schools, Green School, Enviro School, and Sustainable School, etc. and most of them are usually involved in international network such as ENSI(Environment and School Initiatives) and FEE(Foundation for Environmental Education). This study was based on the literature analysis, which included available documents and reports of other countries from country reports, web-pages or official documents. Also, face-to-face or email interviews with personnels responsible for running such initiatives in a couple of countries were conducted. Implications for operating and supporting ECMS were provided based on the analysis and investigation on eco-school related initiatives of other countries, which included the main objective of initiatives, overall program direction, supporting methods, criteria for selection or accreditation, evaluation and monitoring.
This study was conducted as a preliminary step to establish a model for the practical application of environmental education related to food wastes collected from elementary school foodservices. Methods of treatment and present recycling status of food wastes in elementary schools in Kyonggido were surveyed. The consciousness of dieticians who have been serving for elementary school foodservices was also analyzed through the survey questions concerning environmental education for the reduction and recycling of food wastes. The results derived from this survey were as follows: The major portion of food wastes from elementary school foodservices was constituted with vegetables and soup, and an average amount of food wastes per day was highest in June and July. Therefore environmental education related to reduction of wastes was needed in the first semester of school terms, and the possible reduction of food wastes achieved through the proper planning of school foodservice menu was also needed. In most cases food wastes were collected and treated by animal growing farmers or composted by machines in school. In operating composting machines microorganism inoculant was mostly used but dieticians pointed out the problem of a nasty odor, insects, and high energy consumption. This situation means it has not been operated efficiently and suggests an efficiency problem of machine composting in elementary schools because composting itself is based on the aerobic digestion and high temperature fermentation which kills insects and harmful microorganisms. Elementary school dieticians in Kyonggido were aware that food wastes cause main pollution problem, and that food wastes are valuable resources which can be recycled, and recycling of food wastes is inevitable. But more than half of the schools surveyed have not been reused food wastes in school, so a proper model for recycling and reuse of food wastes in school grounds was thought to be needed. Environmental education programs related to food wastes have not been peformed in more than half of the schools surveyed. It was concluded that the following three plans will be helpful to reduce school food wastes. First, environmental education should be enforced, second, teachers' and dieticians' intensive teaching concerning food wastes should be needed, and finally establishment of a model for recycling and reuse of food wastes in school grounds and its application to environmental education would offer a valuable field experience to school students.
This study is about interdisciplinary education model of using Davis Guggenheim's documentary film on global warming which is a big concern in climate change issues, An Inconvenient Truth. It based on Al Gore's slide speech. Through a course student analyzed the cause and phenomenon of global warming resulted from increase of $CO_2$ by using fossil fuel and its environmental science effects-heat wave, desertification, tornado, hurricane, sea level rise caused by melting glaciers, destroying ecosystem like habitat degradation of wild animals, for example polar bear, extreme cold wave caused by change of ocean currents- of global warming. After, student discussed of efforts to prevent global warming. This educational model is appropriate for lower grade student of environmental engineering and also available for converged majors or general education class.
This study was conducted to develop a forest education program through middle school curriculum linkage. We used the ADDIE model, comprising the five phases of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation, to secure the objectivity of the program. In the Analysis phase, middle school textbooks were analyzed while considering middle school students' needs for curriculum linkage and the developmental stages of adolescents. The Design phase focused on promoting an understanding of curriculum subjects based on what was reviewed in the Analysis phase and concretized and organized a program that can be implemented in the forest, with a focus on science and physical education, based on the results of middle school students' needs. We also established the objectives and goals of curriculum linkage forest education, established the concept of the program, and selected the educational contents, teaching-learning methods, and evaluation methods. In the Development phase, we developed a 2-night, 3-day program linkage with the middle school curriculum and created a manual for instructors and a workbook for students. In the Implementation phase, we revised and supplemented the program through the first test operation with 24 students in their second year of middle school, after which, we carried out a six-session program for the 2-night, 3-day as the second test operation with 17 students in their second year of middle school. In the Evaluation phase, the program was evaluated by the students who participated in the second test operation using questionnaires on satisfaction and curriculum linkage understanding as well as rating scales for attitudes toward forests and environmental sensitivity. The results showed that middle school students showed positive significance in satisfaction and understanding of the middle school curriculum as well as attitudes toward forests and environmental sensitivity through the forest education program.
The Environmental problem solving model is an instructional strategy to accomplish the aim of environmental education through investigation of environmental problems and issues of the community. This study is intended to compare the instructional effect of the structured model with the unstructured model of environmental problem solving. The experimental group received the structured instruction and the control group received the unstructured instruction. There did not appear to be any significant difference between the groups in regard to knowledge but in regard to knowledge of environmental issues, the experimental group was more effective than the control group. No significant differences existed between the groups in attitude. In regard to investigating skill and evaluation of environmental issues, the experimental group was significantly more effective than the control group. The experimental group was significantly more effective than the control group in regard to environmental action skills. To foster responsible environmental behavior, environmental education a number of methodologies must be considered and learners must be trained to become problem-solving citizens. It was noted that the structured instruction was more effective than the unstructured instruction in middle school where environmental issues were not taught as an independent subject. We conclude that environmental education must be systematically constructed and taught in a manner which takes into account both its goals and the characteristics of the various learners. 환경문제가 부각되고 글로벌 환경위기에 대응한 저탄소 녹색성장 정책에 따라 초·중등학교도 저탄소 녹색성장 구현을 위한 방안을 마련해야 할 것이다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 교육정보화를 통한 초·중등 녹색학교를 만들기위해 'IT 정보자원의 그린화'와 '교육정보화를 통한 교육환경의 그린화'로 구분하여 추진과제를 제시한다. 'IT 정보자원의 그린화'는 그린 IT 제품 도입시 필요한 가이드라인과 IT 제품 재활용을 고려한 폐기 방안을 제안하고, 친환경 정보 인프라 모델을 제안한다. 교육정보화를 통한 교육환경의 그린화는 학교 구성원들인 교사.학생들이 지켜야할 그린 IT 실천방안 및 교육활동을 제안하고. IT를 활용한 저탄소 교육환경으로 전환을 추구하는 다양한 교육정보화 서비스 활용을 제시한다. 앞으로 이러한 제안이 학교현장에 실현되면 녹색학교 구현에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.
Recently environmental problem becomes such a big issue all over the world that the necessity and importance of the environmental education in school has been simultaneously emphasized. While diverse methods for the environmental education have been researched, this paper, especially focused on a teaching-learning model called GBS (Goal-based scenario), aims to provide a new learner-centered approach for the environmental education. For this purpose, this paper first briefly presents two theoretical backgrounds of GBS (i.e., constructivism and Schank's dynamic memory theory), which is followed by specific and concrete strategies and methods of how to apply GBS in class for the teacher. GBS(Goal-Based Scenario) is a learner-centered model in which learners are presented with a reality-based scenario (or task or problem) and go through several stages of 'missions' to get to a final solution of the given scenario. GBS, while completely resonant with other constructivist learning models in terms of learner-centered approaches, is distinctive from others, when it supplies more specific, structured guides of learning, called 'missions', to the students throughout the whole learning process. In a words, GBS ought to be recognized as an unique learner-centered model compromising the contradictory concepts of 'learner control' and 'structure and specifics' in learning environments still without any damage of constructivist learning principles.
The objective of this study was to review the meaning and problems of Scientific Knowledge and Ethical Value in Environmental Education. The ultimate goal of environmental education is shaping proenvironmental human behavior. The factors of human behavioral decision making are ideology, value, attitude and behavioral intentions. Ideology is a kind of belief system used by social groups to interpret their social world. The main elements of belief system are knowledge and value. The traditional thinking in education has been that we can change behavior by making human beings more knowledgeable and more valuable. In environmental education, the aim of scientific inquiry is to analysis cause-effect relation of human beings behavior and environmental phenomenon, and ethical education is to change the mind of human beings from zero-sum to positive-sum about the relations between human beings and natural environments. But, there are many problems of knowledge education and value education in environmental education. For example scientific knowledge without ethical value is dangerous to environment protection, and ethical value without scientific knowledge is vague. Therefore, we must recognize that the relationship of ethical value and scientific knowledge is not substitutional but complementary. The teaching-learning methods which can integrate knowledge and value in environmental education are rational decision making model. For this model, we can construct teaching contents with inquiry materials. To earn the benefits of specialization among several subjects in environmental education, social studies can focus on social science knowledge and decision making, science education can focus on pure natural science knowledge and scientific investigation, moral education can focus on problems of ethical value system, home economics can focus on practical action and environmental education(Environments in middle school, Ecology and Environments in high school) can integrate social-national science knowledge and ethical value in broad perspective about human beings and ecosystem. That is the method to protect from law of diminishing marginal utility of learning in environmental education.
