  • The characteristics of PAHs accumulated on pine needles which were used as passive samplers of atmospheric POPs were studied. Atmospheric PAHs were accumulated on pine needles. The absorbed rate of PAHs was higher in gaseous state than in particulate and is not constant. The accumulation rate did not change too much among different classes of pine trees. Therefore young pine needles is better as a passive sampler of atmospheric PAHs for short monitoring period.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of meteorological environment variation before and after construction of Nak-dong river estuary barrage. We used meteorological data(air temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, visibility, wind) at Gimhae airport meteorological station. The construction of river estuary barrage can change climate at the neighboring districts and influence human's health and vegetable. The construction of Nakdong river estuary barrage brought rise of temperature, decrease of relative humidity and increase of poor visibility frequency.

  • There is an adsorption method using activated carbon as a typical method for removing elemental mercury. Physical characteristics of activated carbon such as specific surface area and volume of pore (micro and meso) have positive effect for mercury adsorption. Activated carbon is carbon-based material with a high specific surface area. This activated carbon can be manufactured through carbonization and activation process. In this process, physical characteristics of specific surface area and pore distribution are changed by controlling operating parameters like temperature, time and reagent of activation. In this study, we evaluated characteristics of activated carbons manufactured from pinewood and coal with the operating parameters. We evaluated mercury adsorption capacities of the activated carbons having excellent physical characteristics and compared those to the commercial activated carbon.

  • When we looked at the seasonal food dregs of the eastern side of gangwondo, gangneung city's summer and winter food dregs showed 25.9 and 25.8% respectively due to the presence of beach areas and ski resorts. Sokcho city showed 28.12% in summer and yangyang gun's summer food dregs showed 40.2%. Yangyang gun's august food dregs showed 2.7 times larger than annual average amount. Outlook density showed regional characteristics. Data showed that food dregs' amount rate has been reduced gradually from 2005 because of the prohibition of direct filling up. As a result of compositions analysis, the eastern side of gangwondo's water fraction of living dregs were lower than that of chuncheon city where is located at the gangwondo's inland area. chuncheon city's data showed residential areas 53.5%, community areas 56.8% and commercial areas 55.6%. These discrepancies caused by the characteristics of dregs discharge type and climate. The caloric value of dregs has been increased incrementally after the ban of food dregs' direct filling up. Therefore, heating value of the dregs exceeds the existing furnace design spec and it can cause high caloric value problems, so we need additional research to solve these problems.

  • This study aimed to investigate the engineering and environmental characteristics of phosphogypsum-cement-soil mixtures composed of phosphogypsum, soil, and a small amount of cement was analysed on the basis of the unconfined compression test, the tensile strength test, the freezing and thawing test, the wetting and drying test, SEM and EDS analysis, XRD analysis and Leaching test. The specimens were manufactured with soil, cement and phosphogypsum. The cement contents was 10 %, and the phosphogypsum contents was 10, 20, 30, and 40 % by the weight of total dry soil. Each specimen was manufactured after curing at constant temperature and humidity room for 3, 7 and 28 days, after which the engineering characteristics of phosphogypsum-cement-soil mixtures were investigated using the unconfined compression test, the tensile strength test, the freezing and thawing test, the wetting and drying test. The basic data were presented for the application of phosphogypsum-cement-soil mixtures as construction materials. To investigate the environmental characteristics, leaching test was performed and the leaching test results were far below than of regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Therefore the results show that phosphogypsum is environmentally safe and can be used as construction materials in environmental aspect.

  • Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of Yellow-hearted pine and Red pine were investigated. Wood color, annual ring width and latewood percentage were observed by the naked eye. Anatomical properties as the structure of three sections and cell dimensions were examined by an optical microscopy. As a result, the color of bark in Yellow-hearted pine was Reddish-grey, and Red pine showed brown or gray. The color of heartwood and sapwood in Yellow-hearted pine was deep-yellow to brown and creamy-white. And the color of heartwood and sapwood in Red pine was light-brown and light-yellow. The annual ring width of Yellow-hearted pine was narrower than that of Red pine, and the latewood percentage of Yellow-hearted pine was a little higher than that of Red pine. There was no significant difference in the anatomical characteristics between Yellow-hearted pine and Red pine.

  • This study derives the characteristics of physical environmental designs and formats which can serve as guidelines in spatial design for the social regeneration of residential areas. For this purpose, this study redefined factors of social regeneration in living areas and their design strategies through a theoretical review. This study also selected practical examples and investigated the characteristics of environmental design in terms of shapes, finishing, and devices used stated in the strategies for social regeneration in the given examples through field investigation. As a result, designs for communities should Maximize characteristics of daily use and formated types reused as well as use complicated and small facilities. Second, access types should make it easy to induce artificial movement, themes using finishing materials should be given, and perception media should be used to encourage physical activity. Third, psychological stability can be achieved by improving the colors used in the finishing materials, and should ensuring safe environmental facilities by design. Finally, for metaphoric contact to the properties of nature, using themes of nature in the finishing materials and in diverse devices.
