  • Catalytic oxidation characteristics of benzene as a VOC was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor using $Cu/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The parametric tests were conducted at the reaction temperature range of $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, benzene concentration of 400~650 ppm, gas flow rate of 50~100 cc/min, and space velocity range of $7,500{\sim}22,500hr^{-1}$. The property analyses by using the BET, SEM, TGA and the conversion of catalytic oxidation of benzene were examined. The experimental results showed that the conversion was increased with decreasing benzene concentration, gas flow rate and space velocity. Benzene oxidation reaction over $Cu/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst could be expressed as the first order homogeneous reaction of which the activation energy was 17.2 kcal/mol and frequency factor was $1.33{\times}10^6sec^{-1}$.

  • Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is an effective and cost efficient method of removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and petroleum hydrocarbons from unsaturated soils. However, soil vapor extraction becomes ineffective in soils with low gas permeability, for example soils with air permeabilities less than 1 Darcy. Incorporating PVDs in an SVE system can extend the effectiveness of SVE to lower permeability soils by shortening the air flow-paths and ultimately expediting contaminant removal. The objective of the research described herein was to effectively incorporate PVDs into a SVE remediation system. The test results show that the gas permeability was evaluated for four different equivalent diameters, increasing the equivalent diameter results in a decrease in the calculated gas permeability. It was found that the porosity for the dry condition was greater than that of the wet condition and will allow flow rate for the same vacuum flow, offering a low resistance to the air flow.

  • For the first time in the city of Riyadh, the formation of $O_3$ and its relationship with NO and $NO_2$ ($NO_x$) was investigated. Throughout the summer $O_3$, NO, and $NO_2$ were collected from three locations: residential, industrial, and rural areas. During the sampling period $O_3$ concentrations exceeded 1-hour local standards a few times yet remained consistent with the standards most of the time. The $O_3$ concentrations were observed highest in the rural location and lowest in the industrial area. The diurnal variation of NO followed a double peak: one in the morning and the other in the evening, representing the traffic pattern. Early morning NO peaks were observed in the rural location, which were attributed to the movement of NO from other locations. The $O_3$ concentrations depicted typical pattern, increasing after sunrise and reaching its maximum during midday. The highest $O_3$ concentrations were observed in the rural location followed by the residential and industrial. $NO_2$ photolysis rates were 3-4 times higher compared to other similar investigations, potentially due to intense solar radiation. A strong negative correlation was observed between $NO_x$ and $O_3$ values in the industrial location indicating photochemical activities around the industrial area were higher, likely due to additional $NO_x$ emissions from industries. Regression analysis of $NO_x$ and OX ($O_3+NO_2$) indicated that in residential and industrial locations at nighttime there were large $NO_x$ independent regional contributions which is attributed to VOCs. The Weekend Effect was observed in the city potentially due to the production of the OH radical and subsequent reactions with VOCs implying that the area is VOC-sensitive.

  • Occupational nanomaterial exposure is an important issue in the manufacture of such products. People are also exposed to various nanoparticles in their living environments. In this study, we investigated nanoparticle formation during the reaction of ozone and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from a commercial air freshener, one of many widely used consumer products, in a $1-m^3$ reaction chamber. The air freshener contained various VOCs, particularly terpenes. A petri dish containing 0.5 mL of the air freshener specimen was placed in the bottom of the chamber, and ozone was continuously injected into the center of the chamber at a flow rate of 4 L/min with an ozone concentration of either 50, 100 or 200 ppb. Each test was conducted over a period of about 4 h. The higher ozone concentrations produced larger secondary nanoparticles at a faster rate. The amount of ozone reacted was highly correlated with the amount of aerosol formation. Ratios of reacted ozone concentration and of formed particle mass concentration for the three injected ozone concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 ppb were similar to one other; 4.6 : 1.9 : 1.0 and 4.7 : 2.2 : 1.0 for ozone and aerosol mass, respectively.

  • Fish bone-based calcium products are currently receiving much attention among high value-added industries involving calcium. Industrial processing of fish products yields unused fish parts including bones, which could be used as marine health foods to enhance the economic and environmental benefits of fish production. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop the high value-added fisheries products fortified with fish bones supplementing calcium. We here explored the physical and chemical softening methods of the fish bones to enhance texture of the fish products with a high degree of calcium absorption rates. The eluted calcium from the fish bone was quantified with the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The characteristics of the softened fish bones were determined by the laser diffraction particle size analysis, texture profile analysis, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. As the result, the optimized softening method of fish bone was established when Theragra chalcogramma bone was treated twice with the pressurized high temperature (110-120℃ and 1.0-1.5 kg/cm2). The produced softened fish bone turned out to be suitable for the food additives with low particle sizes, low hardness values, and negligible VOCs responsible for the unpleasant flavors.

  • This research examines the removal efficiency of benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) by flowing VOCs, which are generated at a petrochemical complex in the Ulsan area, in a sliding arc plasma (SAP) reactor. The SAP reactor process is composed of 5 steps and the analysis was conducted using a BTX detector and TVOC measuring instrument. The removal efficiency of BTX was better at high concentration than at low concentration and the emitted TVOC concentration increased in later steps of the reactor. In addition, the removal efficiency improved, as the flow velocity increased. The maximum permissible concentration of TVOCs in the first step was about 481 ppm and showed over 94.83% efficiency when it was operated in the 2nd step at concentrations beyond 481 ppm. Therefore, there are many factors for improving the removal efficiency of SAP reactors at low concentration and measures should be prepared according to the application method for the various types of industrial reactors.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to evaluate the level of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among workers handling rust preventive oils. Methods : A total of 30 bulk samples and 54 personal air samples were collected using diffusive samplers at 22 workplaces handling rust preventive oils in Daegu and Gyongsangbuk-do Province from March to October 2013. We also investigated detailed information on the related work conditions, such as kinds of products, handling methods, local exhaustive ventilation systems, and the status of the wearing personal protective equipment. All bulk samples and air samples were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify components to which workers potentially were exposed. Quantitative airborne concentrations of VOCs were confirmed using gas chromatography with flame ionized detectors. Results : In terms of qualitative analyses for the 30 bulk samples, we found carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive toxic(CMR) substances such as butane(carcinogenic Group 1A, mutagenic Group 1B), butoxy ethanol(carcinogenic Group 2), cumene (carcinogenic Group 2), ethyl benzene(carcinogenic Group 2), methyl isobutyl ketone(carcinogenic Group 2) and toluene (reproductive toxic, Group 2). As a result of full-shift based personal air samples, eight substances such as n-hexane, n-heptane, octane, nonane, decane, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene were detected. Among them, n-hexane and n-heptane were detected in all of 54 air samples with $13.13mg/m^3$ and $8.61mg/m^3$ of maximum concentration, respectively. The level of airborne concentration from all of samples were bellow the occupational exposure limit in Korea. Conclusions : Based on the results of this study, workers handling rust preventive oils could be exposed to CMR substances contained in rust preventive oils and n-hexane and n-heptane were found as the most frequent sources of VOC exposure.

  • Computational simulations of adsorption columns were carried out to investigate the removal characteristics of VOCs from a laundry shop. n-Decane was selected as the representative component among the VOCs emitted, and the activity of the adsorbents, such as activated carbon, was evaluated using commercial CFD code. The mathematical framework was composed of continuity and Navier-stokes equations, and the simulation was performed using the Matlab program. The adsorption isotherms of LDF, Freundlich, and Langmuir were evaluated, and the adsorption amount of the adsorption isotherms with the adsorption parameter was compared. The simulation was carried out using a particle porosity, dispersion coefficient, particle density, bed diameter, and bed length of 0.79, 42.4 ㎠/min, 485 g/L, 2.0 cm, and 2.5 cm, respectively. The effect of the gas velocity, dispersion coefficient, and voidage on the adsorption amount was compared in the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The simulation was carried out in the velocity range of 50 to 200 cm/min, dispersion coefficient range of 100 to 400 ㎠/min, and particle porosity range of 0.66 to 0.79. The simulation results of activated carbon with benzene coincided with the Langmuir isotherm. Three types of adsorption isotherm were compared under similar conditions, and the simulation results showed the efficient adsorption condition for hydrocarbons.

  • This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gasphase biofilters, and to propose a stoichiometric analysis approach to characterize biological reaction through carbon mass balance. The VOCs studied were toluene, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as a single substrate for each biofilter. The critical loading rate was determined to be $46.9\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $25.8\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $96.3\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, and $66.5\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$ for toluene, styrene, MEK, and MIBK, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the critical loading rate was well correlated the octanol-water partition coefficient. In the analysis of carbon mass balance, carbon recovery to $CO_2$ became relatively lower as substrate loadings increased, but higher for carbon recovery to biomass. Stoichiometric analysis revealed that biomass yield increased as substrate loadings increased, and its coefficient (g biomass/g substrate) varied from 0.31 to 0.57 for toluene, 0.29 to 0.57 for styrene, 0.08 to 0.56 for MEK, and 0.14 to 0.53 for MIBK.
