Chimeric CD4 proteins were assembled. They contained the entire CD4 ectodomain that is linked to different membrane anchors. Membrane anchors consisted of either glucosyl phosphatidyl inositol (gpi), the transmembrane and cytoplasmic regions of HIV-1 Env protein, or the vesicular stomatitis virus G glycoprotein, respectively. The HIV-1 co-receptor CXCR4 and CD4 were independently inserted into viral envelopes. We compared the insertion of six different CD4/CXCR4 constructs into HIV-1 envelopes, as well as their functionality in targeting and specific infection of cells that constitutively express the HIV-1 Env protein. All of the six different HIV-1 (CD4/CXCR4) pseudotypes were able to transduce Env (+) cells at similar efficiency. In addition, stable transduction of the Env (+) recipient cells demonstrated that all chimeric proteins were functional as receptors for Env when inserted into HIV-1 envelopes. In fact, these results demonstrate for the first time a stable transduction by a targeted HIV-1 pseudotype virus.
The Kepler space mission provides quantitative and qualitative photometric time series of oscillating stars. It is possible to examine statistical study with seismic properties of solar-like stars. Global seismic properties - large frequency separation (${\Delta}{\nu}$), frequency of maximum power (${\nu}_{max}$) and amplitude of Gaussian envelope (A) widely have been used to determine empirical scaling relations for inferring the stellar physical quantities - mass, age and temperature. We aim to confirm whether width of Gaussian envelope on power excess (${\delta}{\nu}_{env}$) can be used with parameter of scaling relation before redgiant phase using Kepler data. Therefore we analyze the characteristics of ${\delta}{\nu}_{env}$ of 129 solar-like stars from main-sequence to subgiant. We have demonstrated that ${\delta}{\nu}_{env}$ has highly correlations with global parameters - ${\Delta}{\nu}$ and ${\nu}max$. We have also found the break of ${\delta}{\nu}_{env}-{\Delta}{\nu}$ and ${\nu}_{max}$ relations.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of aquatic walking exercise on gait and balance parameters of elderly women. Method: 15 elderly people were recruited for this study (age: 73.20±5.19 yrs, height: 153.87±3.36 cm, mass: 60.33±5.73 kg). All variables were measured using Gaitview AFA-50. The variables were the heel contact time ratio, gait angle, and M/P change ratio for gait patterns and ENV, REC, RMS, Total Length, TLC, Sway velocity, and Length/ENV for balance abilities. A paired t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were carried out to verify the differences in the test scores after participating in the water walking program. The significance level for all statistical analyses was set to α=.05. Results: As for the changes in their walking function after the exercise, heel contact time ratio (p<.01) showed a statistical significance, while gait angle and M/P change ratio did not reveal statistically significant differences. In the test of balance ability on both feet and with eyes opened, statistical significance was found in ENV, REC, RMS, TLC (p<.01), and sway velocity (p<.05), while the test with eyes closed showed statistical significance in length/ENV as well as ENV, REC, RMS, sway velocity (p<.01) TLC, and total length (p<.05). As for the single-leg stance balance ability, ENV and REC revealed statistically significant differences. Conclusion: These results show that water walking is effective for improving the function of the ankle flexor muscles, providing stability to the ankle joint during walking and helping efficient walk. In addition, it is also expected to help prevent falls due to loss of balance by improving the stability of lower extremity muscles and trunk.

A defective HIV-1 helper virus DNA, pHyPC, was assembled by deleting the RNA packaging signal, env, nef and the 3'LTR sequences. HIV-1 like virus particles that carry the HIV-1 receptor, CD4 were generated by co expression of pHyPC and plasmid DNAs encoding different chimeric CD4 proteins. The CD4 particles, sharing the CD4 ectodomain, precisely fused to different membrane anchors. CD4(+) particles specifically bound to HIV-1 Env expressing cells, but any signs of infection into these cells were not detected. Binding was only partially blocked by either polyclonal anti-CD4 antibodies or by high concentrations of soluble CD4. Surprisingly, CD4(+) particles also adsorbed to HeLa, CHO, NIH3T3 and COS-7 cells in the absence of HIV-1 Env expression. Adsorption was comparable in strength and speed to the highly specific CD4-Env interaction. CD4(-) particles exhibited only background levels of binding. Cell binding was CD4. dependent, but it was independent of the cell type from which the CD4(+) particles originated. Interestingly, CD4-dependent/Env-independent binding was only found when CD4 was present on virus particles. This suggests that the micro-environment of CD4 on virus particles uniquely expose this new cell binding activity. Its high affinity could explain in part why infection of Env(+) cells by CD4(+) particles was not detected. Further experiments will be required to evaluate whether this strong membrane interaction could represent one step in the multiple-step viral entry process.

The $St{\ddot{o}}ckigt$ sizing test of the most-commonly used sizing tests is easily influenced by the individual testers' bias in recognizing red coloration. Therefore the test had to be modified to improve its reliability and reproducibility by automated recognition of a coloration procedure during testing. In order to achieve this, all measured variables occurring during the $St{\ddot{o}}ckigt$ test was first be analyzed and then reflected in the new automatic system. Secondly, the most important principle applied was to transform the RGB values of the droplet image to hue (H), saturation (S) and value (V) respectively. This is because RGB cannot be used as a color standard, owing to RGB's peculiarity of being seriously affected by the observer's point of view. Therefore, the droplet color had to be separated into three distinct factors, namely the HSV values, in order to allow linear analysis of the droplet color. When the average values of the vectors calculated during color variation from yellow to brown were plotted against time, it was possible to determine the vector value of hue, the most sensitive factor among HSV, at the specific time by differentiation of a function when it exceeds the critical point. Then, the specific time consumed up to the critical point was regarded as the $St{\ddot{o}}ckigt$ sizing degree. The conventional method took more time to recognize an ending point of coloration than the automatic method, and in addition the error ranges of the conventional sizing degrees on the specific addition points of AKD were wider than those of the automatic method.

Reliability of the novel automatic system capable of measuring both St$\ddot{o}$ckigt sizing degree and contact angle at a time was evaluated through the calculation of its repeatability and reproducibility based on TAPPI Standard Method T 1200. As the basis weight of paper specimen increased, the repeatability and reproducibility of the automatic system became more improved than those from Hercules sizing test and contact angle test designated on TAPPI Standard Method T 530 and T 558. The more improved repeatability and reproducibility implies that a single tester can obtain the similar results under similar test conditions in spite of repetitive testing using the automatic system, and likewise that multiple testers can respectively reproduce similar data without big variation from the same paper specimen using the automatic system. In conclusion, this study is greatly meaningful in having developed the world's first automatic system to measure both St$\ddot{o}$ckigt sizing degree and contact angle simultaneously with excellent repeatability and reproducibility.

Environment-friendly shock-absorbing materials were made of wastepaper such as old corrugated containers (OCC) and old newspapers (ONP) with a vacuum forming method. The plate-like cushioning materials made of OCC and ONP respectively by vacuum forming showed superior shock-absorbing properties with lower elastic moduli compared to expanded polystyrene (EPS) and pulp mold. Even though the plate-like materials had many free voids in their fiber structure, their apparent densities (${\approx}0.1g/cm^{3}$) were a little higher than that of EPS (${\approx}0.03g/cm^{3}$) and much lower than that of pulp mold (${\approx}0.3g/cm^{3}$). However, the elastic moduli of the cushioning materials made of wastepaper were much lower than that of EPS or pulp mold. This finding implies that the cushioning materials made of OCC fibers containing more lignin than ONP show better shock-absorbing properties than ONP Moreover, the cushioning materials made of OCC and ONP respectively showed greater porosity than pulp mold. The addition of cationic starch to the cushioning materials contributed to an increase in the elastic modulus to the same level as that of EPS. Furthermore, the deterioration in fiber quality by repeated use of wastepaper played a great role in improving shock-absorbing ability.
