  • Diverse approaches for reducing the total energy consumption of machine tools have been introduced and developed, to cope with rapid increase of total energy costs in world-wide manufacturing industries. To realize the improvement of the energy efficiency, systematic and integrated strategies must be considered, including energy-saving design, optimized control operation and concrete evaluation of the energy efficiency. This paper proposes key enabling technologies required to improve the energy efficiency of 5-axis multi-functional machining tools, considering both of system design and operation in the real production environments. Related standardized procedures of the energy efficiency evaluation is also represented.

  • This paper presents a knowledge-based computer aided process planning system that automatically selects machine tools, machining operations and cutting tools and determines sequences of the machining operations for prismatic parts in die manufacturing. In the proposed system, parts are described by manufacturing features and grouped into part families based on the functions. Each part is repressented by a part frame which consists of basic data and manufacturing features. Knowledge for manufacturing is acquired from the domain expert and represented by frames. A decision model for selection of machine tools, machining operations and cutting tools and for determining sequences of the machining operations are developed by employing the Mealy machine in finite automata with output. The decision procedure and the order of priority which inputs manufacturing features into the Mealy machine are represented by rule for each part family. Backward chaining is used for the proposed system. The proposed system is implemented by using TURBO-PROLOG on the IBM PC/AT. A case study for the slide core is presented to show the function of the proposed system.

  • In machining large screws such as those of extruders, it takes long time to machine them on conventional machines which usually use single-tipped fixed tools. And it is also difficult to use an existing CAD/CAM coftware when trying to get over the problems of conventional machines and making use of CNC machines. In this paper, generation of machining program using rotational tools for large screws defined by longitudinal-section profile is descrebed. Use of rotational tools in machining plays an important role in saving machining time. In the sort of extruder screws, it is easy to define a screw shape by longitudinal-section profile, and by which improvement of dimensional accuracy can be expected. The CAM software developed in this paper is based on user's and designer's friendliness.

  • The spindle unit is core parts in high precision machine tools. Diverse static, dynamic and thermal charateristics of spindle unit are needed for special purpose of machine tools. Compromise between those charateristics will be done in concept design phase. High static stiffness at spindle nose may be very important performance for heavy cutting work. High dynamic stiffness is also useful to high precision and high speed machine tools. Improvement of thermal charateristics in spindle lead to high reliability of positioning accuracy. For high speed spindle structure, the design parameter such as, bearing span, diameter, bearing type and arrangement, preload, cooling and lubrication method should be in harmony.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of vibration induced by the powered hand tools used in the automobile assembly lines, and estimate the prevalence of vibration syndrome. The acceleration levels of four major powered hand tools were measured using the ISO 5349 method along with the time of exposure to the vibration of the hand tools. Four-hour-energy-equivalent frequency-weighted accelerations ranged from $1.27m/s^2$ to $2.58m/s^2$, After exposure to vibration for 12.6 years, about 10% of the workers using impact ranches were expected to develop Raynaud's disease. For the workers using grinders, 16.6% of the workers were expected to develop Raynaud's disease. The results would be of help in developing the guidelines of local vibration control.

  • In the work, a new computerized incremental forming method having high flexibility has been developed. In the mothod, the ordinary tools are replaced by various small tools, and only the small local region of a sheet blank is incrementally by movement of these tools. Since a small tool moves over the arbitrary surface ofthe dies using a NC machine, it is possible to produce three-dimensional and non-symmetric parts directly from CAD data. Arbitrarily shaped dies are made by LOM(Laminated Object Manufacturing), which is one of the Rapid Prototyping Methods. A forming machine is designed and developed by introducing a computer to control the movement of the tools.
