GDSA framework, a computational framework for complex modeling problems in radioactive waste management

  • This paper details a computational framework to produce automated, graphical workflows, and how this framework can be deployed to support complex modeling problems like those in nuclear engineering. Key benefits of the framework include: automating previously manual workflows; intuitive construction and communication of workflows through a graphical interface; and automated file transfer and handling for workflows deployed across heterogeneous computing resources. This paper demonstrates the framework's application to probabilistic post-closure performance assessment of systems for deep geologic disposal of nuclear waste. However, the framework is a general capability that can help users running a variety of computational studies.

  • The single image dehazing algorithm in existence can satisfy the demand only for improving either the effectiveness or efficiency. In order to solve the problem, a novel variational framework for single image dehazing based on restoration is proposed. Firstly, the initial atmospheric scattering model is transformed to meet the kimmel's Retinex variational model. Then, the green light component of image is considered as an input of the variational framework, which is generated by the sensitivity of green wavelength. Finally, the atmospheric transmission map is achieved by multi-resolution pyramid reduction to improve the visual effect of the results. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can remove haze effectively with less memory consumption.

  • In recent days, global shipbuilding companies have been increasing their productivity or expanding their shipyards for a large amount of orders. Though, few researches about the shipyard layout designs have been studied. This research presents a simulation-based shipyard layout design framework to resolve the problems of the shipyard layout design. The shipyard layout design framework was developed on the basis of systems engineering method. The disciplined system engineering technique was guided by ISO/IEC 15288 during the planning phase of the shipyard layout design framework development. This framework suggests that how efficient and effective shipyard layout design could be got, that can satisfy the stakeholder of the layout. Furthermore, it is recommended that how the proposed shipyard layout should be verified and validated by digital simulation model. It is expected that the framework will contribute to not only the improvement of the existing shipyard but also the construction of the new shipyard.

  • This paper presents the development of an optimization framework for road slope design. Recognizing the limitations of current manual stability analysis methods, which are time-consuming, are error-prone, and suffer from data mismatches, this study proposes a systematic approach to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure the safety of infrastructure projects. The framework addresses the subjectivity inherent in engineers' decision-making process by formalizing decision variables, constraints, and objective functions to minimize costs while ensuring safety and environmental considerations. The necessity of this framework is embodied by the review of existing literature, which reveals a trend toward specialization within sub-disciplines of road design; however, a gap remains in addressing the complexities of road slope design through an integrated optimization approach. A genetic algorithm (GA) is employed as a fundamental optimization tool due to its well-established mechanisms of selection, crossover, and mutation, which are suitable for evolving road slope designs toward optimal solutions. An automated batch analysis process supports the GA, demonstrating the potential of the proposed framework. Although the framework focuses on the design optimization of single cross-section road slopes, the implications extend to broader applications in civil engineering practices. Future research directions include refining the GA, expanding the decision variables, and empirically validating the framework in real-world scenarios. Ultimately, this research lays the groundwork for more comprehensive optimization models that could consider multiple cross-sections and contribute to safer and more cost-effective road slope designs.

  • Engineering system problems consist of multi-objective optimisation and the performance analysis is generally time consuming. To optimise the system concerning its performance, many researchers perform the optimisation using an approximation model. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is usually used to predict the system performance in many research fields, but it shows prediction errors for highly nonlinear problems. To create an appropriate metamodel for marine systems, Lee (2015) compares the prediction accuracy of the approximation model, and multi-objective optimal design framework is proposed based on a confirmed approximation model. The proposed framework is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of approximation model, and optimisation. The major objective of this paper is to confirm the applicability/usability of the proposed optimal design framework and evaluate the prediction accuracy based on sensitivity analysis. We have evaluated the proposed framework applicability in derrick structure optimisation considering its structural performance.

  • This paper aims to develop the framework for evaluating the technology maturity by utilizing TRA(Technology Readiness Assessment) approach. In this context, we will provide the directions through analyzing the domestic acquisition process and re lated regulations, and clarify the scenarios to apply the proposed framework to the defense R&D programs. The paper will conclude with the case study for the evolution of the proposed framework.

  • It is the sensitivity and confidentiality of nuclear power plant decommissioning cost that prevent detailed cost information to be released to the public, which causes some limitation to analyze and reuse the costs. This limitation to access cost information means that the lessons learned from preceding cost estimating may not systematically feed back into following cost estimates. As an alternative, decommissioning cost estimation framework is indispensable to reflecting available experience and knowledge for decommission costs. This study provides the cost estimation framework including data flow and structuralization based on engineering and bottom up approach to enhance decommissioning cost estimation.

  • T-splines are recently proposed mathematical tools for geometric modeling, which are generalizations of B-splines. Local refinement can be performed effectively using T-splines while it is not the case when B-splines or NURBS are used. Using T-splines, patches with unmatched boundaries can be combined easily without special techniques. In the present study, an analysis framework using T-splines is proposed. In this framework, T-splines are used both for description of geometries and for approximation of solution spaces. This analysis framework can be a basis of a CAD/CAE integrated approach. In this approach, CAD models are directly imported as the analysis models without additional finite element modeling. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the current analysis framework.

  • Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an established technology and has the potential, in a variety of applications, to significantly reduce cost and improve performance. As RFID-enabled applications will fulfill similar tasks across a range of processes adapted to use the data gained from RFID tags, they can be considered as software products derived from a common infrastructure and assets that capture specific ions in the domain. This paper discusses a framework that supports the development of RFID-enabled applications based on a business process family model (BPFM), explicitly representing both commonalities and variabilities. To develop this framework, common activities are identified from RFID-enabled applications and the variabilities in the common activities are analyzed in detail using variation point concepts. Through this framework, RFID data is preprocessed, and thus, RFID-enabled applications can be developed without having to process RFID data. Sharing a common model and reusing assets to deploy recurrent services may be considered an advantage in terms of economic significance and the overall product quality afforded.

A Hybrid Service Orchestration Framework based on BPEL4WS

  • As the value of B2B integration gets more importance and the business process becomes more complex, BPEL4WS standard has been focused for the solution of the problems which is based on web service technology. Many vendors implement the standard in their systems to integrate B2B and web service based inner-Enterprise Application(EA)s. But there is no way to use the standard to integrate non-web service based EAs, because the standard is designed only for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) over web services. This paper proposes Hybrid Service Orchestration Framework to participate web services and also non-web service based EAs in the business process as a partner using BPEL4WS standard. The framework introduces Hybrid Service Architecture to represent non-web service based EAs as a service, so BPEL4WS could be used to integrate web services and non-web service based EAs. And the framework also introduces Hybrid Service Toolkit to support software level facilities. The paper also introduces Hybrid Orchestration System that is based on Hybrid Service Orchestration Framework.
