A Study on the Rates of Return to Education (우리나라의 교육투자 수익률 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of the study was to estimate and analyze the rates of return to educational investment. The study was designed to estimate the social and private rates of return to educational investment by school level and sex in order to measure education's economic value with a viewpoint of human capital theory. The produced result of this study are as follows. The social rates of return to education turned out to be male high school 7.94%, male junior college 3.74%, male university 8.50% female high school 4.30%, female junior college 10.11%, female university 6.92%. The private rates of return to education turned out to be male high school 8.41%, male junior college 3.39%, male university 8.38%, female high school 7.90%, female junior college 10.34%, female university 7.33%, In order to measure economic value of educational investment, rates of return to education were compared with those to physical capital investment. Social rates of return to education turned out to be profitable for female junior college, while for private rates of return to education turned out to be profitable in all school levels except for male junior college.

A Pedagogical Model Reflecting on Competency Analysis of of the Female Engineering Students in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (제 4차 산업혁명시대의 공과대 여학생 역량분석을 반영한 교수법 모델)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an educational model based on the capacity analysis of college students. In order to measure the learning ability of female science and engineering students, we used various tools to derive core competencies. The competency element of human resources implementation, the element of learning achievement area in the undergraduate education actual condition survey, and the analysis of the learning achievement elements of the engineering certification program were analyzed and the development of teaching method was searched to find ways to increase the competence of female students. In addition, we developed a model that can apply the development of pedagogy in the curriculum to the liberal arts, majors, and comparative courses, and presented the internship in field experience area, the improvement of on the spot learning, and teaching method and guidance to enhance the female students' competence. Also, as a case study of the proposed teaching method, new curriculum of 'Understanding of Big Data' which is the basis of the fourth industrial revolution technology in the second semester of 2016 was developed and applied to the education model. The results of this study are very positive, and we can expect the effectiveness of the new education model to enhance the learning ability and capacity of female students.

Exploring the Relationships between Major Satisfaction and Psychological Well-being of Female Engineering Students (공과대학 여학생의 전공만족과 심리적 안녕감과의 관계 탐색)

  • This research aims to examine the relationship between major satisfaction and psychological well-being of female engineering students. To achieve this goal, first, differences in major satisfaction and psychological well-being among engineering students were examined. Second, differences in major satisfaction and psychological well-being among female undergraduate students were investigated. In addition, the effects of psychological well-being, as perceived by undergraduate students by gender and major, on major satisfaction were explored. A total of three hundred and forty-nine (349) undergraduate students from two universities in Korea responded to survey based on a two-variables scale. The findings were that, firstly, male engineering students scored higher in two variables including their most sub-factors, and that gender differences in relation satisfaction as well as positive relationship with others, autonomy, and environmental mastery were statistically significant. Secondly, female engineering students scored higher in major satisfaction and several sub-factors of two variables, and that major differences in major satisfaction (total), social perception satisfaction, and autonomy - a sub-factor of psychological well-being - were statistically significant. Thirdly, a positive correlation among major satisfaction and psychological well-being was identified. Finally, psychological well-being could explain about 19% of major satisfaction. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with attention on education for promotion of major satisfaction.

Entrepreneurship Perception and Needs Analysis of Entrepreneurship Education for Female Engineering Students Using an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA 기법을 활용한 공학계열 여대생의 기업가정신 인식 및 교육 요구도 분석)

  • As the need for entrepreneurship to create new values and innovate in the rapidly changing social environment is emerging, education for entrepreneurial is emerging in university education. The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of entrepreneurship education and to derive the priority of education based on actual indicators of importance-performance. For this study, we surveyed 227 female college students in E Woman's University by using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method for entrepreneurship factors. The result showed that the means of importance of all factors and sub-factors of entrepreneurship were higher than the means of performance of them, and the difference was statistically significant except for the determination. In addition, the results of the IPA matrix analysis showed that the factors that needed urgent improvement in self-confidence, future-orientation, active/innovative activities, and proactivity. Based on the results of this study, the implications of the development of entrepreneurship curriculum for college students in engineering field were discussed. This study is meaningful that it provided practical basic information of curriculum design leading to the manifestation of entrepreneurship of women in engineering field by analyzing entrepreneurship of female engineering students and deriving priority factors of educational treatment.

A Systematic Review of Female Engineering Students Related Studies (공과대학 여학생 관련 연구 동향 분석: 국내 연구를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to analyze the research trends of female engineering students focused on domestic research and to suggest implications for future researches. For this purpose, 67 domestic researches (academic articles & graduate theses) which were published since 1996 were collected using the academic research information service and the National Assembly Library search service. All of these 67 researches have been reviewed and classified according to analytical criteria such as publication year, research method, journal's research field and research subjects. Our findings show that firstly, related research on female engineering students has been growing since 1996. Secondly, there were more researches of both academic journals and graduate theses, using quantitative method compared to those with the other research methods. Thirdly, the research themes could be classified as follows: gender-awareness, female engineering students'(hereafter, FES) psychological variables, customized education for FES, career related variables, FES's properties and counselling for them. Fourth, regarding the result of analysis on the research topic, 41.79% of the researches were related to FES's 'career' related factors as well as diverse correlates. Based on these findings, it is necessary to continue studying on FES using various research methods as well as adopting different research perspectives. Also, practical and educational treatments for FES are required with particular attention to their individual variables.

Satisfaction and Needs of Female Students in Engineering with Counseling Men Professors (공대 여학생의 남자교수 상담에 대한 만족도와 요구도)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction and needs of female students in Engineering with counseling male professor. Subjects of this study were 92 female students in Engineering from a university in K city. Results of survey showed that women students in Engineering were most satisfied with the usefulness of counseling and next with male professor's attitude as counselor. Counseling needs of female students in Engineering was highest on receiving concrete information on finding a job from counseling and next to it on understanding women students. Results of focus group interview and suggestions for the study in the future were presented respectively.

  • Recently, it has been emphasized that more girls should be able to contribute to society in the engineering field. However, there is little research for understanding the psychological characteristics of female engineering students. We first must understand their capabilities in order to take advantage of the strengths of female engineering college students. Based on this understanding, it is necessary to provide future educational interventions for them. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the gender differences in creativity in engineering education. Additionally, we wanted to know whether the differences were domain-specific or domain-general differences. For this, we targeted 351 engineering students in Busan and Daegu. An integrated creativity test and engineering creativity test were carried out. It was found that female engineering students had lower scores on both the integrated creativity and engineering creativity tests than male students. These results suggest that we should develop and apply appropriate strategies to enhance the creativity of female students in engineering education.

Examination of Gender-Related Attitudes of Engineering Professors as a Correlate for Career Barrier of Female Engineering Students (공대 여학생 진로장벽과 관련된 공대 교수의 성인지적 태도 탐색)

  • The present study was carried out to investigate gender-related attitudes of professors in engineering as a socio-environmental factor for career barriers of female engineering students. For this purpose, 220 professors, 169 in engineering and 51 in non-engineering, completed questionnaires that evaluated gender-related knowledge, behavior, and career expectations. Our results showed that both engineering and non-engineering professors showed a low level of knowledge of gender differences. Both groups selected soft skills such as leadership, initiative and self efficacy as lacking in female students, rather than their academic skills. Professors in engineering showed higher expectations of female students pursuing a career in engineering but lower expectations for working on core projects and taking leadership at the workplace than the professors in non-engineering. The level of gender-sensitivity related to teaching was lower for professors in engineering than those in non-engineering, although professors in engineering evaluated their gender sensitivity higher than the evaluation of their female students. In addition, professors in engineering opted less for developing programs for female student career development in engineering than professors in non-engineering, and they showed a low interest level in participating in such programs. This study showed that the efforts to make engineering professors aware of the characteristics of female students should precede the development of education programs.

  • Demands on customized educational programs for female students in college of engineering in university level make this study be launched and conducted. Literature reviews related to educational environments, psychological mechanism of female students and current status of conventional educational programs for them were provided. The related survey with 97 students in a university in Incheon was also conducted. Various statistical methods based on SPSS Window's 15.0 version were adopted and applied to analyze data which were collected through the survey. The result of data analysis addressed that female students appeared higher interests in gender recognition than male students do. This result was also proved by statistical analysis. Additional differential findings based on statistical analysis were gender roles and leaderships in classes, employment to the field of specialization and so on.
