A liquid rocket engine experiences various static loads in flight, such as high pressures due to propellents, thrust and thermal loads due to cryogenic liquid oxygen and combustion gas with extreme vibration. During the engine development stage, structural analyses and investigation on the strain measured from ground firing tests are necessary for determining the structural reliability of the engine. In this study, the strain characteristics, obtained from the ground firing tests of a 75 tonf-class engine, were analyzed.

As a evaluation method of combustion stability in a liquid rocket engine thrust chamber, external disturbance devices are used. In the paper, the study on pulse-gun ignition tests for a combustion stability rating test of a thrust chamber was performed. Charging volume of pulse-guns was determined by confirming the intensities of the pressure waves from the ignition tests in the cold-flow conditions. While using same injector head, combustion instabilities were not encountered during 14 hot-firing tests without pulse-guns but combustion instabilities were triggered by pulse-gun ignition during 2 hot-firing tests. The results showed that the pulse-gun ignition test could be the evaluation method and could reduce the hot-firing test number for the stability rating of a thrust chamber.

The main purpose of launch vehicle is to insert satellite into a target orbit safely and correctly. To accomplish the main purpose of launch vehicle, the inserting velocity, inserting angle, and final mass of launch vehicle should be within the allowable range. In general, such requirements are satisfied with applying TCS(Thrust Control System) and TDS(Tank Depletion System), which manage thrust and mixture ratio by controlling propellant flow rate with thrust and mixture ratio control valves. In this study, the control characteristics of thrust and mixture ratio control valve were examined by PID control logic for stable operation of liquid-Propellant rocket engine at on-dosing point. The analysis on the control characteristics of control valves was done with AMESim code and the results from control valve test facility at KARI.
Clearance movements of engine piston are very related to the piston impact to the engine block as well as many tribological problems. Some of the major parameters that influence these kinds of performances are piston profiles, piston offsets and clearance magnitudes. In our study, computational investigation is performed about the piston movements in the clearance between piston and cylinder liner by changing the skirt profiles and piston offsets. Our results show that curved profile and more offset magnitude to thrust side have better performance that has low side impact during the engine cycle.

This paper suggests the development scheme for a supersonic turbo jet engine in order to increase the performance and to reduce the weight based on the characteristics of components as well as the current technology trends.
Unstable torsional vibration on the marine ship's propulsion shafting system with diesel engine occurred due to a slippage of multi-friction clutch which was installed between increasing gear and shaft generator. In this paper, the mechanism of this vibration was verified via torsional, whirling, axial and structural vibration measurements of shafting system and noise measurement of gear box. And it was also identified by the theoretical analysis method.
Although the harsh space environment imposes many severe challenges to space pioneers, space exploration is a realistic and profitable goal for long-term humanity survival. One of the viable and promising options to overcome the harsh environment of space is nuclear propulsion. Particularly, the Nuclear Thermal Rocket (NTR) is a leading candidate for nearterm human missions to Mars and beyond due to its relatively high thrust and efficiency. Traditional NTR designs use typically high power reactors with fast or epithermal neutron spectrums to simplify core design and to maximize thrust. In parallel there are a series of new NTR designs with lower thrust and higher efficiency, designed to enhance mission versatility and safety through the use of redundant engines (when used in a clustered engine arrangement) for future commercialization. This paper proposes a new NTR design of the second design philosophy, Korea Advanced NUclear Thermal Engine Rocket (KANUTER), for future space applications. The KANUTER consists of an Extremely High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (EHTGR) utilizing hydrogen propellant, a propulsion system, and an optional electricity generation system to provide propulsion as well as electricity generation. The innovatively small engine has the characteristics of high efficiency, being compact and lightweight, and bimodal capability. The notable characteristics result from the moderated EHTGR design, uniquely utilizing the integrated fuel element with an ultra heat-resistant carbide fuel, an efficient metal hydride moderator, protectively cooling channels and an individual pressure tube in an all-in-one package. The EHTGR can be bimodally operated in a propulsion mode of $100MW_{th}$ and an electricity generation mode of $100MW_{th}$, equipped with a dynamic energy conversion system. To investigate the design features of the new reactor and to estimate referential engine performance, a preliminary design study in terms of neutronics and thermohydraulics was carried out. The result indicates that the innovative design has great potential for high propellant efficiency and thrust-to-weight of engine ratio, compared with the existing NTR designs. However, the build-up of fission products in fuel has a significant impact on the bimodal operation of the moderated reactor such as xenon-induced dead time. This issue can be overcome by building in excess reactivity and control margin for the reactor design.

A steady-state/transient performance simulation model was newly developed for the propulsion system of the CRW (Canard Rotor Wing) type UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) during flight mode transition. The CRW type UAV has a new concept RPV (Remotely Piloted Vehicle) which can fly at two flight modes such as the take-off/landing and low speed forward flight mode using the rotary wing driven by engine bypass exhaust gas and the high speed forward flight mode using the stopped wing and main engine thrust. The propulsion system of the CRW type UAV consists of the main engine system and the duct system. The flight vehicle may generally select a proper type and specific engine with acceptable thrust level to meet the flight mission in the propulsion system design phase. In this study, a turbojet engine with one spool was selected by decision of the vehicle system designer, and the duct system is composed of main duct, rotor duct, master valve, rotor tip-jet nozzles, and variable area main nozzle. In order to establish the safe flight mode transition region of the propulsion system, steady-state and transient performance simulation should be needed. Using this simulation model, the optimal fuel flow schedules were obtained to keep the proper surge margin and the turbine inlet temperature limitation through steady-state and transient performance estimation. Furthermore, these analysis results will be used to the control optimization of the propulsion system, later. In the transient performance model, ICV (Inter-Component Volume) model was used. The performance analysis using the developed models was performed at various flight conditions and fuel flow schedules, and these results could set the safe flight mode transition region to satisfy the turbine inlet temperature overshoot limitation as well as the compressor surge margin. Because the engine performance simulation results without the duct system were well agreed with the engine manufacturer's data and the analysis results using a commercial program, it was confirmed that the validity of the proposed performance model was verified. However, the propulsion system performance model including the duct system will be compared with experimental measuring data, later.

Scramjet engine is one of the core parts of hypersonic vehicle of next generation and being investigated by many countries. Korea Aerospace Research Institute performed a ground test of the model scramjet engine S1 in 2007. And, S2 model which is improved from S1 model in engine startability and thrust was tested with HIEST (High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel) at Kakuda Space Center of JAXA. Design condition of S2 model was Mach 6.7, however, it was tested at Mach 7.7 as an off-design condition test. As a test result, flow separation was found at the inside of the intake, but the engine showed stable combustion pressure distribution. Furthermore, compared to other test models, S2 model showed a good performance value in thrust and specific impulse.

Selecting liquid methane as fuel is a prevailing trend for recent rocket engine developments around the world, triggered by its affordability, reusability, storability for deep space exploration, and prospect for in-situ resource utilization. Given years of time required for acquiring a new rocket engine, a national-level R&D program to develop a methane engine is highly desirable at the earliest opportunity in order to catch up with this worldwide trend towards reusing launch vehicles for competitiveness and mission flexibility. In light of the monumental cost associated with development, fabrication, and testing of a booster stage engine, it is strategically a prudent choice to start with a low-thrust engine and build up space application cases.
