  • This study investigated the effect of strain on hole mobility and hole effective mass in a p-channel rectangular nanowire with two-dimensional confinement. We obtained the valence energy band structure using the six-band k.p method and calculated the mobility and effective mass of the hole in the [100] direction taking the strain effect into account in the inversion region. The hole mobility of strained silicon was calculated using Kubo-Greenwood formalism. As a result, it showed good performance compared to relaxed silicon, but its magnitude was insignificant.

  • Metal Mono Chalcogenides(MMC)는 각각의 III족 metal 원자당한개의 chalchogen 원자를 갖고 있는(MX, M=Ga and In, X=S, Se, and Te)층상구조 화합물이다.

  • In this study, we investigate the electronic and atomic structure of graphene on O-terminated MgO(111) using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. To suggest a possible direction for future band gap engineering of graphene on MgO(111), adsorption of carbon atoms on graphene/MgO(111) is studied by considering the several adsorption sites. Details in adsorption properties of carbon atoms on graphene/MgO(111) are analyzed in terms of energy band structure.

  • Young pulsar wind nebulae, powered by energetic central pulsars, are often observed as bright extended sources in the X-ray band. They are believed to accelerate electrons and positrons to very high energy and can possibly explain the positron excess observed by Fermi and AMS. The electron distribution in these PWNe can be best studied by X-ray satellites because emission in the X-ray band is produced by direct synchrotron radiation of the electrons and positrons. We present NuSTAR studies of PWNe and discuss the implication. Future studies to help further our understanding of particle acceleration will be briefly discussed.

  • Thin film a-Si solar cells deposited by PECVD have many advantages compared to the traditional crystalline Si solar cells. They do not require expensive Si wafer, the process temperature is relatively low, possibility of scaling up for mass production, etc. In order to produce thin film solar cells, understanding the relationship between the material characteristics and deposition conditions is important. It has been reported by many groups that the band gap of the a-Si material and the deposition rate has an linear relationship, when RF power is used to control both. However, when the process pressure is changed in order to control the deposition rate and the band gap, a diversion from the well known linear relationship occurs. Here, we explain this diversion by the deposition condition crossing different plasma regions in the Paschen curve with a simple model. This model will become a guide to which condition a-Si thin films must be fabricated in order to get a high quality film.

  • The photoluminescence characteristics of the zinc gallate have been investigated as a function of the composition and the firing atmosphere. Two distinct emission bands were observed whose peaks are 360 nm and 430 nm respectively. These emission bands are considered to be from two different emission centers. For $ZnO/Ga_2O_3$=49.3/50.7 or higher, 430 nm band is predominant and for $ZnO/Ga_2O_3$=49.2/50.8 or lower, 360nm band becomes predominant, whereas 430 nm band is almost completely suppressed. The shift of emission peak is though to be due to the change of the cation distribution with the zinc content in the spinel zinc gallate. Also, the emission centers responsible for the 360nm band are considered to be more efficient energy absorbers than the ones for the 430 nm band. Highly efficient green emitting phosphor was obtained by activating Zn-deficient zinc gallate with manganeses.

  • A novel empirical mode decomposition strategy based on Fourier transform and band-pass filter techniques, contributing to efficient instantaneous vibration analyses, is developed in this study. Two key improvements are proposed. The first is associated with the adoption of a band-pass filter technique for intrinsic mode function sifting. The primary characteristic of decomposed components is that their bandwidths do not overlap in the frequency domain. The second improvement concerns an attempt to design narrowband constraints as the essential requirements for intrinsic mode function to make it physically meaningful. Because all decomposed components are generated with respect to their intrinsic narrow bandwidth and strict sifting from high to low frequencies successively, they are orthogonal to each other and are thus suitable for an instantaneous frequency analysis. The direct Hilbert spectrum is employed to illustrate the instantaneous time-frequency-energy distribution. Commendable agreement between the illustrations of the proposed direct Hilbert spectrum and the traditional Fourier spectrum was observed. This method provides robust identifications of vibration modes embedded in vibration processes, deemed to be an efficient means to obtain valuable instantaneous information.

  • The electron band structure of manganese-adsorbed graphene on an SiC(0001) substrate has been studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon introducing manganese atoms, the conduction band of graphene, that is observed in pristine graphene indicating intrinsic electron-doping by the substrate, completely disappears and the valence band maximum is observed at 0.4 eV below Fermi energy. At the same time, the slope of the valence band decreases by the presence of manganese atoms, approaching the electron band structure calculated using the local density approximation method. The former provides experimental evidence of the formation of nearly free-standing graphene on an SiC substrate, concomitant with a metal-to-insulator transition. The latter suggests that its electronic correlations are efficiently screened, suggesting that the dielectric property of the substrate is modified by manganese atoms and indicating that electronic correlations in grpahene can also be tuned by foreign atoms. These results pave the way for promising device application using graphene that is semiconducting and charge neutral.

  • TM data, which have better resolution in spatial and spectral than MSS data, were used for this study, and several Image Processing Techniques (IPT) were examined for finding the best IPT to fit to lineament extraction and mineralized zone mapping. The Ryeongnam area was selected as test area, because the area is one of major mineralized zones in Korea and its hydrothermal alteration zone is wider and deeper than other areas. The spatial filtering method is most optimum one for limeament extraction: that is, the directional spatial filtering is most efficient to detect N-S, E-W direction lineaments on the image, and the high boost filtering can be applied for mapping all direction lineaments. The ratio method was selected for detecting altered zone. It is possible to make several tens combinations in ratio with 7 bands of TM data, but considering spectral characteristics of each band of TM to the geological meterials and vegetation, the band 4/band 3(A), band 5/band 7(B), and B/A ratio methods were chosen among them. The 5/7 ratio image did not show clearly the altered area due to noise from vegetation cover, so the 4/3 ratio imae was used for trying to decrease the effect of vegetation. As a result the B/A ratio image showed quite nicely the altered zone of the test area. In conclusion, the spatial filtering is the best image processing techniques for lineament mapping, and the B/A ratio image in TM data is useful for the mineralized zone mapping.

  • The effect of inter-band transition on surface plasmon resonance in gold thin film was investigated. We induced localized inter-band transition in the film by using incident light on its surface from a green laser (532 nm) source, and the surface plasmon resonance for inter-band transition was investigated at different wavelengths. It was determined that the reflectivity of blue light (450 nm) was significantly reduced in the region where the green laser was incident. We demonstrated that this decrease is mainly due to the coupling between the blue light and the surface plasmon resonance of excited electrons in higher energy states, based on experimental results for the incident and polarization angle-dependent reflectivity of the blue light.
