  • South Korea is changing into a multi-cultural society, due to an increase in international marriage, foreign workers and transcultural immigration. In addition, the number of North Korean defectors entering South Korea has increased and now, there are approximately 25000. Therefore, this review have focused on a research that pertains to adaptation and mental health concerns of their children. Children who have immigrated themselves or whose parents have immigrated, might experience language barriers, difficulties in school adjustment, identity confusion and mental health problems. However, their academic performance and developmental status are known to be variable and be affected by socioeconomic status and their parents' educational level. Studies that evaluated the psychological problems of North Korean adolescent refugees' indicated the need for interests in both emotional and behavioral problems. The risk factors of North Korean adolescent refugees' mental health are suggested to be past traumatic experiences, long duration of defection and short period of adaptation. When mental health professionals provide assessment and treatment, they should consider the pre- and post-migration experiences & cultural background that affect the illness behaviors and attitudes toward mental illnesses. Lastly, the majority of children with multi-cultural background are still under an adolescent period and we should follow up with long-term perspectives.

  • Purpose. A natural disaster negatively affects children's emotional and behavioral adjustment. The purpose of this paper was to examine the prevalence, symptoms, and correlates of PTSD after the occurrence of Typhoon Rusa. Method. 261 elementary school children living in Kimcheon, which was a devastated rural area in South Korea by Typhoon Rusa, were selected. Data were collected 4 months after the disaster using the PTSD Reaction Index categories recommended by Frederick, severity of PTSD. Results. 12.3% of the children had either moderate or severe PTSD symptoms; 22.7% reported mild symptoms; and the remaining 65% had sub-clinical symptoms of PTSD. The most frequent symptom was recurrenct fear(67.0%). 13% to 17.2% of children exhibited difficulty in concentration, sleep disturbance, and guilt feeling. The regression model of severity of PTSD was composed of the level of exposure to traumatic experiences, grade in school, gender, negative coping style, and social support, and explained 34.3% for PTSD symptoms. Exposure to traumatic experiences was the strongest factor of all predictors. Conclusion. Emotional support from friends and coping style were correlated with PTSD severity. School-based interventions that emphasizes coping with disaster related problems and problem-solving may prove to be useful, and may aid in building close and supportive ties with teachers, classmates, and friends.

Previous studies did show if the effect of fashion therapy could be maintained continuously; therefore, we intend to examine the existence of the long-term effects of fashion therapy in an empirical manner and provide implications for social and public interest. This study used a qualitative approach to investigate the effects of fashion therapy with the following results. Low self-esteem, negative emotions, and rigid thinking symptoms appeared by numerous stress factors, and various changes were made through fashion therapy. Emotional changes such as positive emotions and feeling of achievement, and psychological changes including self-concept formation, change of sight and self-esteem improvement appeared. Sociological and behavioral changes were also identified. We found the maintained and long term effects of fashion therapy; therefore, study provides academic implications to reconsider the social value of fashion.

  • Since 1990, South Korean children living in relative poverty have increased whereas those living in absolute poverty have decreased until 2002 and then the decrease remained somewhat stagnant. A substantial body of research proposed a strong relations between child poverty and low quality well-being of the child. Poor children, in comparison to those of more affluent families, are more likely to have health, behavioral, social, and emotional problems. They are also more likely to grow up in families that provide less cognitive stimulations which, in turn, can negatively affect their cognitive and academic attainments. The present paper highlights the trends and the consequences of child poverty and suggests policy approaches based on the premise of decreasing poverty of low-income children and their families.
