The fluorine doping along with heavy metal oxides remarkably raised the $^3$H$_4$ lifetime and the quantum efficiency in Tm$^{3+}$-doped silicate glasses. 29 mol% of fluorine substitution for oxygen in 70SiO$_2$-15Pbo-12ZnO-3KO$_{1}$2/ glass raised $^3$H$_4$ lifetime to 193 $mutextrm{s}$. Refractive indices were raised by heavy metal oxide substitution, but hardly changed by fluorine substitution. The fluorine doping changed the local structure around Tm$^{3+}$ions, then low energy vibrations related to fluorine are considered to largely reduce the multi-phonon relaxation rates in the oxyfluoride silicate glasses. The $^3$H$_4$ lifetimes and absorption and emission spectra of Tm$^{3+}$doped silicate and oxyfluoride silicate glasses are reported, and Judd-Ofelt calculation results are discussed in this paper.
We present a calculation model for an improved quantitative theoretical analysis of electronic and optical properties of strained-piezoelectric[111] InGaAs/GaAs superlattices (SLs). The model includes a full band-coupling between the four important energy bands: conduction, heavy, light, and spin split-off valence bands. The interactions between these and higher lying bands are treated by the k ${\cdot}$ p perturbation method. The model takes into account the differences in the band and strain parameters of constituent materials of the heterostructures by transforming it into an SL potential in the larger band-gap material region. It self-consistently solves an $8{\times}8$ effective-mass $Schr{\ddot{o}}dinger$ equation and the Hartree and exchange-correlation potential equations through the variational procedure proposed recently by the present first author and applied to calculate optical matrix elements and spontaneous emission rates. The model can be used to further elucidate the recent theoretical results and experimental observations of interesting properties of this type of quantum well and SL structures, including screening of piezoelectric field and its resultant optical nonlinearities for use in optoelectronic devices.

A single CdZnTe detector is tested for suitability in a prototype CT/ SPECT system designed to acquire both emission and transmission data. The detector has the size of 1${\times}$l-cm$^2$ with 4${\times}$4 1.5${\times}$l.5mm$^2$ pixellated anodes. Since the detector is smaller than imaged object, we translated it in an arc centered at the x-ray tube to image larger objects. Pulse counting electronics with very short shaping time (50 ns) are used to satisfy high photon rates in x-ray imaging, and response linearity up to 3${\times}$10$\^$5/ counts per second per detector element is achieved. The energy resolution of 122-keV gamma-ray is measured to be 14%. We have characterized the system performance by scanning a radiographic resolution phantom .and the Hoffman brain phantom. The spatial resolution of CT and SPECT are about 1 mm and 7 mm, respectively.
The purpose of this study is to investigate planning of urban energy supply systems configuration and operating conditions for the district heating and cooling system using combined heat and power system. Generally the district heating and cooling system has been known to one of the effective way for energy saving, cost reduction and demand side management of energy. Economical analyses were carried out and operating characteristics for some systems were examined in terms of GER factor which represents to the ratio of gas and electricity costs. Rates of the energy consumption and the $CO_2$ emission were compared from the system configuration of the energy supply system with new district cooling system with the conventional one.
The isothermal flow structure and mixing characteristics of a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for micro-gas turbine were numerically investigated. Location of pilot nozzle, angle and direction of swirl vane were varied as main parameters with constant fuel flow rates for each nozzle. As a result, the variation in location of pilot nozzle resulted in significant change in turbulent flow field near burner exit, in particular, center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) as well as turbulent intensity, and thus flame stability and emission characteristics might be significantly changed. The swirl angle of $45^{\circ}$ provided similar recirculating flow patterns in a wide range of equivalence ratio (0.5~1.0). Compared to the co-swirl flow, the counter-swirl flow leaded to the reduction in CTRZ and fuel-air mixing near the burner exit and a weak interaction between the pilot partially premixed flame and the lean premixed flame. With the comparison of experimental results, it was confirmed that the case of co-swirl flow and swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ would provided an optimized combustor performance in terms of flame stability and pollutant emissions.
The effect of the di-tertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) additive on the heat release rate and emissions of a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine fueled with high Research Octane Number (RON) fuels were investigated. The experiments were performed using 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% (by volume) DTBP-RON90 blends. The RON90 Fuel was obtained by blending 90% iso-octane with 10% n-heptane. The experimental results show that the operation range was remarkably expanded to lower temperature and lower engine load with the DTBP additive in RON90 fuel. The first ignition phase of HCCI combustion was observed at 850 K and ended at 950 K while the hot ignition occurred at 1125 K for all fuels at different engine working conditions. The chemical reaction scale time decreases with the DTBP addition. As a result, the ignition timing advances, the combustion duration shortens, and heat release rates were increased at overall engine loads. Meanwhile, the unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) and CO emissions decrease sharply with the DTBP addition while the NOx emissions maintain at a lower level.

A novel hybrid system composed of a biotrickling filter and an activated sludge reactor was investigated under the conditions of four different SRTs (sludge retention times). The performance of the hybrid reactor was found to be directly comparable among the four different sludge ages. Discernible differences in the removal performance were observed among four different SRTs of 2, 4, 6, and 8 days. High removal efficiency was achieved by continuous circulation of activated sludge over the immobilized mixture culture, which allowed on pH control, addition of nutrients, and removal of paint VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The results also showed that the removal efficiency for a given pollutant depends on the activity of microorganisms based on the SRT. As the SRT increased gradually from 2 to 8 days, the average removal performance decreased. The highest removal rate was achieved at the SRT of 2 days at which the highest OUR (oxygen uptake rate), $6.1mg-O_2/liter-min$ was measured. Biological activity in the recycle microbes decreased to a much lower level, $3.6mg-O_2/liter-min$ at a SRT of 8 days. It is thus believed that young microorganisms were more active and more efficient for the VOCs removal of low concentrations and high flow rates. The apparent correlation of $R^2=0.996$ between the average removal efficiency and the average OUR at each SRTs suggests that VOCs degradation by young cells significantly affected the overall removal efficiency for the tested SRTs.

Extreme recovery of the thermal energy from the combustion of flue gas may bring about early gas condensation resulting in the increased formation of nitric acid vapor. The behavior of the nitric acid formed inside the stack and in the atmosphere was investigated through a computer-aided simulation in this study. Low temperatures led to high conversion rates of the nitrogen oxide to nitric acid, according to the Arrhenius relationship. Larger acid plumes could be formed with the cooled flue gas at $40^{\circ}C$ than the present exiting gas at $115^{\circ}C$. The acid vapor plume of 0.1 ppm extended to 25 m wide and 200 m high. The wind, which had a seasonal local average of 3 m/s, expanded the influencing area to 170 m along the ground level. Its tail stretched 50 m longer at $40^{\circ}C$ than at $115^{\circ}C$. The emission concentration of the acid vapor in the summer season was a little lower than in the winter. However, a warm atmosphere facilitated the Brownian motion of the discharged flue gas, finally leading to more vigorous dispersion.
Direct shear tests were on ducted in a laboratory setting in order to investigate the shear strength and deformation behavior of rock joints. Also, the characteristics of acoustic emissions (AE) during shearing of rock joints were studied. The artificial rock joints were created by splitting the intact blocks of Hwangdeung granites and Iksan marbles. Joint roughness profiles were measured by a profile gage and then digitized by Image analyzer. Roughness profile indices(Rp) of the joints were calculated with these digitized data. Peak shear strength, residual shear strength, shear stiffness and maximum acoustic emission(AE) rate were investigated with joint roughness. The peak shear strenght, the residual shear strength and the shear stiffness were increased as roughness popfile index or normal stress increased in the shear tests of granites. In the tests of marble samples, the shear deformation characteristics were not directly affected by joint roughness. As the result of two directional shear tests, the shear characteristics were varied with shear direction. AE count rates were measured during the shear deformation and the AE signals in several stages of the deformation were analyzed in a frequency domain. The AE rate peaks coincided with the stress drops during the shear deformation of joint. The dominant frequencies of the AE signals were in the vicinity of 100 kHz fo rgranite sample and 900 kHz for marble samples. The distribution of amplitude was dispersed with increasing normal stress.
This research was conducted to understand the magnitude and nature of the stormwater emissions with the goal of quantifying stormwater pollutant concentrations and mass emission rates of pollutants. Eight highway sites in Southern California area were monitored for three years with collecting of grab and flow-weighted composite samples, rainfall and runoff flow. Generally the EMCs cannot be determined by simple statistical averaging of measured pollutant concentrations because of random characteristics of runoff quality and quantity. Therefore, this manuscripts will show a new EMC determination method. The EMC ranges of 95% confidence intervals are 102.78-216.37mg/L for TSS, 104.53-251.79mg/L for COD, 5.42-10.58mg/L for oil & grease and 2.42-10.18mg/L for TKN. The ranges of washed-off mass loading are determined to $0.06g/m^2-17.27g/m^2$ for TSS and $0.1-3.23g/m^2$for COD.
