  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has received widespread attention in the field of civil engineering because of its superior durability and corrosion resistance. This article presents the damage mechanisms of a novelty composite called carbon nanofiber modified flax fiber polymer (CNF-modified FFRP). The ability of acoustic emission (AE) to detect damage evolution for different configurations of specimens under uniaxial tension was examined, and some useful AE characteristic parameters were obtained. Test results shows that the mechanical properties of modified composites are associated with the CNF content and the evenness of CNF dispersed in the epoxy matrix. Various damage mechanisms was established by means of scanning electron microscope images. The fuzzy c-means clustering were proposed to classify AE events into groups representing different generation mechanisms. The classifiers are constructed using the traditional AE features -- six parameters from each burst. Amplitude and peak-frequency were selected as the best cluster-definition features from these AE parameters. After comprehensive comparison, a correlation between these AE events classes and the damage mechanisms observed was proposed.

  • Combustion experiments were conducted at three different fuels ($CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$) to investigate the effects of combustor pressure (30 ~ -30 kPa) on combustion charateristics and reaction zone structure. Regardless of the fuels, emission index of CO (EICO) increased with decreasing combustor pressure, and EICO of $C_2H_4$ was mostly affected by changing combustor pressure at subatmospheric pressure. In order to observe reaction zone, $OH^*$, $CH^*$ and ${C_2}^*$ chemiluminescence intensity were measured. The sequence of the chemiluminescence intensity peak position was affected by chemical characteristics of fuels rather than changing combustor pressure. The emission zone thickness of $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$, defined by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $CH^*$ intensity profile, were increased with decreasing combustor pressure. however, the thickness of $C_2H_4$ exhibited the opposite tendency due to the characteristics of the fuel as the bond structure.

  • The effect of {{{{ {Ga }^{3+ } }} addition on the photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence of {{{{ {SrTiO}_{3 } }}:{{{{ { Pr}^{3+ } }} was stu-died by performing the excitation emission and decay time measurements. Addition of {{{{ {Ga }^{3+ } }} in {{{{ {SrTiO}_{3 } }}:{{{{ { Pr}^{3+ } }} resulted in a considerable enhancement of {{{{ { Pr}^{3+ } }} emission intensity. From the analysis of the experimental results the following mechanism is proposed. Excitation in the {{{{ {SrTiO}_{3 } }} host lattice leads to the formation of electrons in the conduction band and holes in the valence band. The electrons in the conduction band re-combine radiatively with the holes trapped at {{{{ { Ga}^{3+ } }} and the energy is transferred to {{{{ { Pr}^{3+ } }} ion which give its own characteristic red emission.

  • To achieve the clean and efficient utilization of low-rank coal, the combustion and pollutant emission characteristics of chars from low-temperature and fast pyrolysis in a horizontal tube furnace were investigated in a TG-MS analyzer. According to the results, the combustion characteristic of chars was poorer than its parent coals. The temperature range of gaseous product release had a good agreement with that of TGA weight loss. Gaseous products of samples with high content of volatile were released earlier. The NO and NO2 emissions of chars were lower than their parent coals. Coals of high rank (anthracite and sub-bituminous) released more NO and NO2 than low rank coals of lignite, so were chars from coals of different ranks. SO2 emissions of char samples were lower than parent coals and did not show obvious relationship with coal ranks.

  • An Experimental study was conducted on $CO_2$ recycle combustion heating system using pure oxygen instead of conventional air as an oxidant, which is thereby producing a flue gas of mostly $CO_2$ and water vapor($H_2O$) and resulting in higher $CO_2$ concentration. The advantages of the system are not only the ability to control high temperatures characteristic of oxygen combustion with recycling $CO_2$. but also the possibility to reduce NOx emission in the flue gas. A small scale industrial reheating furnace simulator and specially designed variable flame burner were used to characterize the $CO_2$ recycle oxy-fuel combustion, such as the variations of furnace pressure, temperature and composition in the flue gas during recycle. It was found that $CO_2$ concentration in the flue gas was about 80% without $CO_2$ recycle, but increased to $90{\sim}95%$ with $CO_2$ recycle. The furnace temperature and pressure was decreased due to recycle and the NOx emission was also reduced to maintain under 100ppm.

  • The important factor for the development of burner is the achievement of low emissions with maintaining combustibility. In case of maintaining high temperature flame and excess air to increase the combustibility, it is possible to achieve high combustion efficiency, due to the reduction of UHC(unborn hydrocarbon), carbon monoxide and soot. However, it is difficult to reduce the thermal NOx produced in the high temperature flame. To solve this problem, we developed externally oscillated oil burner which is possible for the high efficiency combustion and low NOx emission, simultaneously. The experiment of flame characteristics and NOx reduction were achieved according to the variation of frequency, amplitude and air velocity. Frequency, amplitude and air velocity are the most important parameter. The optimum operating conditions are frequency 1,900 Hz, amplitude 3 $V_{pp.}$ and air velocity 6.8 m/s. Reduction of NOx and CO are 47% and 22%, respectively.

  • This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the stability of combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine at various operating conditions. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a diesel engine, the fuel injection timing was varied one main injection and two pilot injections at various conditions. The experimental apparatus consisted of DI diesel engine with four cylinders, EC dynamometer, multi-stage injection control system, and exhaust emissions analyzer. The combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed for the main, pilot-main injection, pilot-pilot-main injection strategies. It is revealed that the combustion pressure was smoothly near the top dead center and the coefficient of variations is reduced due to the effect of pilot injection. Also, $NO_x$ emissions are dramatically decreased with pilot injection because the decrease of rate of heat release. However, the soot is increased at early pilot injection and main injection.

  • SPECT technology is used for the reconstructed image in the field of industry noncontact measurement system. One of the distortion problems in reconstructed image quality is a collimator characterictic. The image distortion is caused by a geometrical structure of the collimator. This paper indicated a correction method to remove the image distortion by the structure of the collimator, and compared with the existing correction method. The correction. method removed the image distortion to use deconvolution of projection data with the shift-variant blurring function in the frequency domain. In this pater, I simulated with the collimator angle and distance between the detector and the center of object. and verified with expeimental data. The validity and limitation of correction method is studied for actual industrial applications.

  • The results of high speed photography, acoustic emission detection and plasma UV radiation intensity measurement during CO2 laser welding of stainless steel 304 are presented. Video images with high spatial and temporal resolution allowed to observe the melt dynamics and keyhole evolution. The existence of a high speed melt flow which originated from the part of weld pool and flowed along the sides wall of keyhole was confirmed by the slag motion on the weld pool. the characteristic frequencies of flow instability and keyhole fluctuations at different welding speed were measured and compared with the results of Fourier analyses of temporal acoustic emission (AE) and light emission (LE) spectra. The experimental results were compared with the newly developed numerical model of keyhole dynamics. (The model is based on the assumption that the propagation of front part of keyhole into material is due to the melt ejection driven by laser induced surface evaporation.) The calculations predict that a high speed melt flow is induced at the front part of keyhole when the sample travel speed exceeds several 10mm/s. The numerical analysis also shows the hump formation on the front keyhole wall surface. Experimentally observed melt behavior and transformation of the AE and LE spectra with variation of welding speed are qualitatively in good agreement with the model predictions.
