  • The purpose of this paper is to find out the full extent of abilities of elementary students on area of operations and the effects on student's affective domain toward mathematics, after providing 3rd grade students with Skemp's play activities instead of providing activities suggested in the textbook of 7th curriculum. For this study, we will first analyse new elementary mathematics curriculum of 3rd grade and then explore mathematical factors for play activities related to operational sections. The play activities are revised from that of Skemp's for our classroom circumstances, but the ideas included from Skemp's such as thinking aloud were not changed. The experimental group while consists of 39 students were taught Skemp's play activities instead of usual textbook activities for 30 hours for the second term. In all other area, both the experimental group and the comparative group were taught the same contents. Statistical data is as follows 1) In addition and subtraction, the experimental group had 5.6% higher score than the comparative's, but the difference of mean of the both groups is not significant within 5% level. 2) In multiplication and division, the experimental group had 7.8% higher score than the comparative's and also the difference of mean of the beth within 5% level is significant. 3) When measured the effects in affective domain, the interests, attitude, and values for mathematics had about 10% higher score after the experiment than before the experiment. So we conclude that Skemp's activities are more effective than the activities suggested in the textbook on the area of operations, especially in multiplication and division.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine what aspects of mathematical activities in elementary school mathematics textbooks pre-service school teachers pay attention to in the process of didactic transposition. To do this, the third grade students of the College of Education were asked to analyze the activities of the elementary mathematics textbooks and then select a lesson activities as needed to modify or supplement the activities. As a result of the study, in the process of revising textbook activities for mathematics lessons, pre-service teachers pay attention to whether the textbook activities provide concrete activities, whether they induce student motivation, and whether there is overlap between classes activities. For the didactic transposition of textbook activities for mathematics lessons, pre-service teachers were able to comprehensively utilize relevant curriculum documents such as national curriculum and teachers' manual for checking the goals and achievement standards and lesson objectives.

  • In this paper, based on the results of analysis on types and strategies of estimation in measurement in the textbooks according to 2009 revised elementary mathematics curriculum, the following four implications are suggested for curriculum development and textbook development for a later date. First, it is necessary to reconcile curriculum and textbooks in contents for estimation in measurement. In 2009 revised elementary mathematics curriculum, only estimation in length, estimation in capacity, estimation in weight, estimation in angular measure are presented. However, estimation in time and estimation in area are presented in textbooks. Second, it is necessary to introduce various strategies for estimation in measurement. In teacher's manual, three strategies like using referent, chunking, unitizing are illustrated. But in textbooks, such strategies are not illustrated properly. Third, the meaning of the 'estimate' need to be clarified. In textbooks, 'estimate' are used also in other contexts. Fourth, it is necessary to clarify whether or not to deal with estimation in time, estimation in area, and estimation in volume in the school curriculum. In 2009 revised elementary mathematics curriculum, estimation in time, estimation in area, and estimation in volume are not mentioned explicitly.

  • Elementary textbook ${\ll}Mathematics\;4-2{\gg}$ first published in 2014 according to the 2009 elementary mathematics curriculum has been dealing with concave polygons which were not treated in elementary textbooks according to the previous curriculum. However, n the present paper, to show that there is a need to reconsider the handling of the concave polygons, after discussions about the polygon, problems in handling the concave polygons were discussed in next two viewpoints: Does 2009 elementary mathematics curriculum allow handling of the concave polygons? are there any logical leaps in handling of the concave polygon? And the following reasons to reconsider the handling of the concave polygons are presented as conclusions. First, there was no process of publicizing the handling of the concave polygon. Second, the evidences that will justify the handling of the concave polygon can not be found in 2009 elementary mathematics curriculum. Third, there are logical leaps in the handling of the concave polygons. Fourth, there is no consistency in handling the concave polygons.

  • In this study, elementary mathematics textbooks from grade 1 to grade 6 of Korea and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture are compared. This study is limited to number area. In this study, textbooks of Korea are developed according to the 2007 curriculum and published between 2009 and 2011 and textbooks of Yanbian are published between 2009 and 2010. Seven implications for developing Korean textbooks can be drew from Yanbian textbooks as conclusions. First, it is necessary to consider using counters to teach place values. Second, it is necessary to consider reading inequalities in style of one to one correspondence between signs and words. Third, it is necessary to consider mentioning explicitly that it is possible to express the concrete whole which has a continuous quantity as natural number 1. Fourth, it is necessary to consider introducing term of fraction line that separates the numerator and denominator. Fifth, it is necessary to consider mentioning explicitly the properties of the fraction. Sixth, it is necessary to consider broadening examples to use decimals. Seventh, it is necessary to consider stating clearly that it is possible to make an additional place of decimals by adding a zero at the right end of the decimals.

  • In problem solving education, sentence problems are a tool for comprehensive evaluation of mathematical ability. The sentence problems refer to the problem expressed in sentence form rather than simply a numerical representation of mathematical problems. In order to solve sentence problems with a mixture of mathematical terms and general language, problem-solving ability including the ability to understand the meaning of sentences as well as the mathematical computation ability is required. Therefore, it is important to analyze syntactic elements from the linguistic aspects in sentence problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the complexity of sentence problems in the length of sentences and the grammatical complexity of the sentences in the depth of the sentences by analyzing the 51 sentence problems presented in the $4^{th}$ grade mathematics textbook(2015 revised curriculum). As a result, it was confirmed that it is necessary to examine the length and depth of the sentence more carefully in the teaching and learning of sentence problems. Especially in elementary mathematics, the sentence problems requires a linguistic understanding of the sentence, and therefore it is necessary to consider syntactic elements in the process of developing and teaching sentence problems in mathematics textbook.

  • In recent elementary school mathematics a word 'stipulation' newly appears. The word is used instead of definition. However, there seems to be some differences between definition and stipulation. So, in this paper we investigate those differences through the concept 'function of definition'. In school mathematics textbooks there are definitions which carry out special functions In mathematical contexts or situations. We can say that we understand those definitions, only if we also understand the functions of definitions in those contexts or situations. Functions of definition are classified as, stipulation-function, discrimination-function, analysis-function, demonstration-function, improvement-function. With these analyses we made a frame for investigating the characteristics of the definitions in recent elementary school mathematics textbooks. As a result of analysing functions of definition we found that generally speaking, stipulation-function is excessively emphasized and the other functions of definition are not explained adequately in school mathematics textbooks. So it is required that the textbook authors should be careful not to miss an opportunity for the functional understanding and the mathematics teachers should be aware of the functions of definitions. Finally, we comment that textbook author, teacher, and researcher should be careful in using the word 'stipulation' instead of definition, because, although there are various functions of definitions, students might ream only stipulation-function.

  • In the elementary school mathematics textbook that has been revised in 2013, the instructional sequence for teaching addition and subtraction, which had remained unchanged for three decades since 1982, was finally changed in 2013. Particularly, the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers without regrouping, such as 72+25=97 or 85-24=61, are taught earlier than the composing and decomposing of the number 10 using other numbers. This study examines the appropriacy and validity of these changes. However, the reason for these changes in the national curriculum or teacher's guide could not be determined. Further, several references emphasize the addition of two single-digit numbers, such as 7+8=15, and the subtraction of a single-digit number from a number between 11 and 19, such as 16-9=7, as basic facts. In other countries' textbooks, the teaching of addition and subtraction up to the number 20 is prioritized before teaching the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers without regrouping. The results of this study indicate that these changes in the instructional sequence in the textbook that was revised in 2013 need to be reconsidered.
