The DOTIFS is a new multi-object Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) planned to be designed and built by the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, India, (IUCAA) for cassegrain side port of the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) being constructed by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nainital. (ARIES) It is a multi-integral field unit (IFU) spectrograph which has 370-740nm wavelength coverage with spectral resolution R~1200-2400. Sixteen IFUs with microlens arrays and fibers can be deployed on 8 arcmin field. Each IFU has $8.7^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}7.4^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ field of view with 144 spaxel elements. 2304 fibers coming from IFUs are dispersed by eight identical spectrographs with all refractive and all spherical optics. In this work, we show optical design of the DOTIFS spectrograph. Expected performance and result of tolerance and thermal analysis are also shown. The optics is comprised of f=520mm collimator, broadband filter, dispersion element and f=195mm camera. Pupil size is determined as 130mm from spectral resolution and budget requirements. To maintain good transmission down to 370nm, calcium fluoride elements and high transmission optical glasses have been used. Volume Phase Holographic grating is selected as a dispersion element to maximize the grating efficiency and to minimize the size of the optics. Detailed optics design report had been documented. The design was finalized through optical design review and now ready for order optics.
Composite laminated structures supported on elastic foundations are being increasingly used in a great variety of engineering applications. Composites exhibit larger dispersion in their material properties compared to the conventional materials due to large number of parameters associated with their manufacturing and fabrication processes. And also the dispersion in elastic foundation stiffness parameter is inherent due to inaccurate modeling and determination of elastic foundation properties in practice. For a better modeling of the material properties and foundation, these are treated as random variables. This paper deals with effects of randomness in material properties and foundation stiffness parameters on the free vibration response of laminated composite plate resting on an elastic foundation. A $C^0$ finite element method has been used for arriving at an eigen value problem. Higher order shear deformation theory has been used to model the displacement field. A mean centered first order perturbation technique has been employed to handle randomness in system properties for obtaining the stochastic characteristic of frequency response. It is observed that small amount of variations in random material properties and foundation stiffness parameters significantly affect the free vibration response of the laminated composite plate. The results have been compared with those available in the literature and an independent Monte Carlo simulation.
This study analyzes contaminant movement under transient flow in a rubble mound revetment offshore waste landfill barrier system that prevents contaminant runoff. The barrier system consists of bottom layer and side barrier. For the bottom layer system, impermeable clay layer is used. For the side barrier system, the HDPE barrier sheet (primary element) plays the main role, and the intermediate protection layer (supplementary element) is responsible for the barrier. Seepage, advection, dispersion numerical analysis was carried out using SEEP / W and CTRAN / W programs. As a result, under abnormal conditions considering the fluctuation in tidal range, the volume and direction of the flow velocity vector of the pore water change with time and the dispersion concentration of the contaminant changes. When comparing the case of 2 m tidal range and 8 m tidal range, the larger the tide value, the higher the concentration of contaminant under abnormal conditions. It was found that the rate of change of the concentration of the contaminant changed depending on the change in the tidal range, and as a result, the outflow of the pollutant was smaller than that in the steady flow state.

In coastal region, eutrophication, Do deficit and red tide are frequently occurred by influx of fresh water. When the fresh water containing pollutants is discharged into the sea, the surrounding water is contaminated by dispersion of freshwater flowing into coastal waters. The prediction and analysis about the dispersion process of the discharged fresh water should be conducted. A modeling system using GUI was developed to simulate hydrodynamic flow and fresh water dispersion in coastal waters and to analyze the results efficiently. The modeling module of the system includes a tide model using a finite element method and a fresh water dispersion model using a particle-tracking method. This system was applied to predict the tidal currents and fresh water dispersion in Mokpo coastal zone. To verify accuracy of the hydrodynamic model, the simulation results were compared with observed sea level and time variations of tidal currents showing a good agreement. The fresh water dispersion was verified with observed salinity distribution. The dispersion model also was verified with analytic solutions with advection-diffusion problems in 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional simple domain. The system is operated on GUI environment, to ease the model handling such as inputting data and displaying results. Therefore, anyone can use the system conveniently and observe easily and accurately the simulation results by using graphic functions included in the system. This system can be used widely to decrease the environmental disaster induced by inflow of fresh water into coastal waters.
Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. Those waves are used to determine the ground stiffness profile using their dispersion characteristics. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than that of others. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis that uses the dispersion information of both Love and Rayleigh wave was proposed. Numerical analysis, theoretical model test, and field test were performed to verify the joint inversion analysis. Results from 2D, 3D finite element analysis were compared with those from the transfer matrix method in the numerical analysis. On the other hand, the difference of results from each inversion analysis was investigated in the theoretical model analysis. Finally, practical applicability of the joint inversion analysis was verified by performing field test. As a result, it is confirmed that considering dispersion information of each wave simultaneously prevents excessive divergence and improves accuracy.

Most of the previous models for analysis of shallow water flow assumed the uniform velocity distributions over the flow depth so that they produced incorrect velocity prediction at meandering part due to the ignorance of secondary current. In this study, the vertical velocity profiles in longitudinal and transverse direction were decomposed as the mean and variation components, which resulted in additional dispersion stresses terms in momentum equations. The proposed model were applied at the channels with $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$ bends, and shallow water flow in curved channel was analyzed using dispersion stresses. The dispersion stresses acted as a sink or source in the momentum equations, which caused the transverse convection of momentum to shift from the inner bank to the outer bank.
Water flow simulations for environmental problems often require local detailed analyses for better understanding and accurate prediction of the fate of pollutant in water bodies. This study deals with the development and application of a two-dimensional flow an dispersion model to the coastal water area to find out possible changes due to the wide port development plan. As far as the spatial discretization is concerned, the finite element method is attractive because of its flexibility and ability to naturally treat complex coastal geometries. The model uses finite element theory and the Galerkin weighted-residual approach as its basis. Developed model is applied to the Busan New harbor Construction site. Results from the model were compared with the measured water level and flows in four stations. The flow pattern by the model shows to be similar to the observed data away from the construction site where the flow is not affected. From the simulation results, it is concluded that the model may be useful for numerous other studies for planning and management purposes, especially flow and pollution dispersion in the coastal water bodies where the flow is so complicated.
This paper describes a finite element model of the microstructure of dispersion type nuclear fuels, which can be used to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the fuels during irradiation. The model simulates a representative region of the fuel as a prism shaped unit cell made of brick elements. The elements within the unit cell are assigned material properties of either the fuel or the matrix depending on position, in such a way as to represent randomly distributed fuel particles with a size distribution similar to that of the as manufactured fuel. By applying an appropriate heat flux across the unit cell it is possible to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the unit cell as a function of the volume fraction of the fuel particles. The presence of a fuel/matrix interaction layer is simulated by the addition of a third set of material properties that are assigned to the finite elements that surround each fuel particle. In this way the effective thermal conductivity of the material may also be determined as a function of the volume fraction of the interaction layer. Work is on going to add fission gas bubbles in the fuel as a fourth phase to the model.
The present study deals with the numerical modelling for the one dimensional contaminant transport through saturated homogeneous and stratified porous media using meshfree method. A numerical algorithm based on element free Galerkin method is developed. A one dimensional form of the advectivediffusive transport equation for homogeneous and stratified soil is considered for the analysis using irregular nodes. A Fortran program is developed to obtain numerical solution and the results are validated with the available results in the literature. A detailed parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of certain key parameters. Effect of change of dispersion, velocity, porosity, distribution coefficient and thickness of layer is studied on the concentration of the contaminant.
Corrugated board is composed of cellulose fibers which are arranged with the same direction as the board manufactured. The direction is classified with machine direction (MD) and cross-machine direction (CD). Therefore, corrugated board is orthotropic material that has totally different strength properties at each direction and especially, at machine direction, the mechanical properties of fiberboard is superior. The compression strength of the corrugated fiberboard boxes is very important information to the manufacturers and the end users. This study was carried out to design the optimum pattern, size, and location of ventilating hole for ventilating container through the finite element analysis. The optimum pattern and location of ventilating and hand hole were vertical oblong, a short distance to the right and left from the center of panel, and center or a short distance to the top of both sides, respectively. We identified the effect on both stress dispersion and stress level from the analysis of redisigned hand hole.
