In this paper, we propose a real-time system for counting people. The proposed system uses an impulse radio ultra-wideband(IR-UWB) radar to estimate the number of people in a given location. The proposed system uses learning-based classification methods to count people more accurately. In other words, a feature vector database is constructed by exploiting the pattern of reflected signals, which depends on the number of people. Subsequently, a classifier is trained using this database. When a newly received signal data is acquired, the system automatically counts people using the pre-trained classifier. We validated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by presenting the results of real-time estimation of the number of people changing from 0 to 10 in an indoor environment.
Some of DC actuators used in home automation, office automation, medical equipment and automotive systems require a position sensor. In low power applications, the introduction of such a transducer remarkably increases the whole system cost, which justifies the development of sensorless position estimation techniques. The well-known AC motor drive sensorless techniques exploiting the fundamental component of the back electromotive force cannot be used on DC motor drives. In addition, the sophisticated approaches based on current or voltage signal injection cannot be used. Therefore, an effective and inexpensive sensorless position estimation technique suitable for DC motors is presented in this paper. This technique exploits the periodic pulses of the armature current caused by commutation. It is based on a simple pulse counting algorithm, suitable for coping with the rather large variability of the pulse frequency and it leads to the realization of a sensorless position control system for low cost, medium performance systems, like those in the field of automotive applications.
A monchromator controller has been built to drive directly by a personal computer. This controller gives better conveniency and accuracy on spectroscopic experiment when a monochromator has deficient driver. This controller consists with simple electronic circuit and control program. The original spectroscopic precision is retained by using stepper motor. The rate changing method is adopted for short slew time. And the scanning is synchronized with spectrum recording device. Because the controller includes electronic counting ciruit, other program can be executed on personal computer during monochromator scanning.

People estimation is important to provide IoT services. Most people counting technologies use camera or sensor data. However, the conventional technologies have the disadvantages of invasion of privacy and the need to install extra infrastructure. This paper proposes a method for estimating the number of people using a Wi-Fi AP. We use channel state information of Wi-Fi and analyze that using deep learning technology. It can be achieved by pre-installed Wi-Fi infrastructure that reduce cost for people estimation and privacy infringement. The proposed algorithm uses a k-binding data for pre-processing process and a 1D-CNN learning model. Two APs were installed to analyze the estimation results of six people. The result of the accurate number estimation was 64.8%, but the result of classifying the number of people into classes showed a high result of 84.5%. This algorithm is expected to be applicable to estimate the density of people in a small space.
The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of waist size on the reliability and validity of pedometers to count steps in children and youth. The participants for this study were 20 children and youth, composed of 14 Hispanic and 6 Caucasian children. Ten children and youth had waist circumferences greater than the $85^{th}$ percentile (Body Mass Index (BMI)=$28.91\pm3.07$), and 10 children and youth had waist circumferences smaller than the $50^{th}$ percentile (BMI=$18.05\pm1.55$). To examine pedometer reliability, each child completed 3 ascent and descent trials up a set of 15 stairs while wearing a Yamax SW-701 pedometer. The main effect of trials was not statistically significant for the stair ascent trials F (2, 36)=2.575 or for the descent trials F (2, 36)=0.235. The trial by group interaction was also not statistically significant. To examine the influence of waist circumference on the validity of the pedometer in counting walking steps at a self-selected walking pace, the children and youth in the two groups completed a 400-m course. The main effect on the groups was statistically significant, F (1, 18)=7.489. The main effect of counting techniques was not statistically significant, F (1, 18)=2.983 (hand-counted vs. pedometer counted). Overall, the trial and trial by group interaction comparisons for the 400-m walk were not statistically significant, suggesting that the pedometer was equally valid as a tool for assessing walking steps in high waist circumference (HWC) and low waist circumference (LWC) in children and youth.

It requires a lot of costs and manpower to manage an election. The electronic voting scheme can make the election system economic and trustful. The widespread use of smart phones causes mobile voting to be a major issue. The smart phone can be used as a mobile voting platform since it can carry out many services in addition to basic telephone service. To make mobile voting practical and trustful, we analyzed two subjects of study. Firstly, the way to make a biometric based mobile ID, which has legal binding forces. In mobile voting, user identification is accomplished on line since the voter should be able to vote wherever they go. The digital ID conducts a similar role to the need for a resident card. The user's identity is bound to the resident card legally. To bind the user's identity to the smart phone, we use USIM. Biometric recognition is also needed to authenticate the user, since the user cannot prove him or her on line face-to-face. The proposed mobile ID can be reissued by means of introducing a random secret value. Secondly, the mobile voting scheme is proposed where candidates can accept election results without doubt. The goal of an election is to select a leader among two or more candidates. Existing electronic voting schemes mainly focus on the study of ballot verification accomplished by voters. These approaches are not safe against collusion attacks where candidates and the election administration center are able to collude to fabricate election results. Therefore, a new type of voting and counting method is needed where candidates can directly take part in voting and counting stages. The biometric based multi-signature scheme is used to make the undeniable multi-signed ballot. The ballot cannot be verified without the help of all candidates. If candidates accept election results without a doubt, the fairness of the election is satisfied.

Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) and deep learning techniques have affected video surveillance systems in various ways. The surveillance features that perform detection, tracking, and classification of specific objects in Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) video are becoming more intelligent. This paper presents real-time algorithm that can run in a PC environment using only a low power CPU. Traditional tracking algorithms combine background modeling using the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), Hungarian algorithm, and a Kalman filter; they have relatively low complexity but high detection errors. To supplement this, deep learning technology was used, which can be trained from a large amounts of data. In particular, an SRGB(Sequential RGB)-3 Layer CNN was used on tracked objects to emphasize the features of moving people. Performance evaluation comparing the proposed algorithm with existing ones using HOG and SVM showed move-in and move-out error rate reductions by 7.6 % and 9.0 %, respectively.

This paper proposes a vehicle detector with an anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensor and addresses experimental results to show the detector's performance. The detector consists of an AMR sensor and mechanical and electronic apparatuses. The AMR sensor, composed of four magnetoresistors, senses disturbance of the earth's magnetic field caused by a vehicle moving over the sensor and then produces an output indicative of the moving vehicle. This paper verifies performance of the detector on the basis of experimental results obtained from the field tests carried under the two traffic conditions on local highways in Korea. First, I show the vehicle counting performance on a low speed congested highway by comparing the vehicle counts measured by the detector with the exact counts. Second, both vehicle counts and average speeds calculated from the measured point-occupancy on another continuously free running highway are compared with the reference values obtained from a loop detector which has two independent loop coils, where I have used several performance indices including mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) to show the performance consistency between the two types of detectors.
Marine chlorella (Nannochloropsis oculata) is cultivated at the fish farming association of experimental fishery laboratory. In the culture of the chlorella, it is necessary to count the number of chlorella in order to understand the condition of increase. For that purpose, we develop automatic chlorella counter using the image processing and the neural network. Its effectiveness is confirmed through the experiment.
