  • The growth and characterization of $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As/In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ narrow-gap inverted high electron mobility transistor structures, developed as a candidate material for spin-injection devices, are presented in this study. We have grown samples possessing surface $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ channels of different thicknesses (30 nm and 60 nm) both with and without a thin 3 nm $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ cap layer by using molecular beam epitaxy. We then investigated the in-plane transport properties as well as the Rashba spin-orbit coupling constant of the two-dimensional electron gas confined at the heterojunction interface.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) have been extensively studied because of their promising low-cost alternatives to conventional semiconductor based solar cells. DSSCs consist of molecular dye at the interface between a liquid electrolyte and a mesoporous wide-bandgap semiconductor oxide. Most efforts for high conversion efficiencies have focused on dye and liquid electrolytes. However, interface engineering between dye and electrode is also important to reduce recombination and improve efficiency. In this work, for interface engineering, we deposited semiconducting ferroelectric $BiFeO_3$ with bandgap of 2.8 eV on $TiO_2$ nanoparticles and nanotubes. Photovoltaic properties of DSSCs were characterized as a function of thickness of $BiFeO_3$. We showed that ferroelectric $BiFeO_3$-coated $TiO_2$ electrodes enable to increase overall efficiency of DSSCs, which was associated with efficient electron transport due to internal electric field originating from electric polarization. It was suggested that engineering the dye-$TiO_2$ interface using ferroelectric materials as inorganic modifiers can be key parameter for enhanced photovoltaic performance of the cell.

  • We have studied the effect of host materials on the electrophosphorescence properties by comparing three different host materials such as tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (III) $(Alq_3)$, bis(8-hydroxyquinoline)-zinc (II) $(Znq_2)$, and 4,4'-N,N' dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP) doped with a red-emissive phosphorescent dye, 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-21H,23H-porphyrin platinum (II) (PtOEP). The EL spectra show a strong red emission (peak at 650 nm) from the triplet excited state of PtOEP and a very weak emission from an electron transport layer of $Alq_3$ and a hole transport layer of N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD). We find that the triplet exciton lifetime and the quantum efficiency decrease in the order of CBP, $Alq_3$, and $Znq_2$ host materials. The results are interpreted as a poor exciton confinement in $Alq_3$, and $Znq_2$ host compared with in CBP. Therefore, it is very important for the triplet-exciton confinement in the emissive layer for obtaining a high efficiency.

  • This study examined the effect of Sn co-doping on the transport and magnetic properties of Cr-doped $In_2O_3$ thin films grown on (100) silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The experimental results showed that Sn co-doping enhances the magnetization and appearance of the anomalous Hall effect, and increases the carrier (electron) concentration. These results suggest that the conduction carrier plays an important role in enhancing the ferromagnetism of a laser-deposited Cr-doped $In_2O_3$ film, which may have applications in transparent oxide semiconductor spin electronics devices.

  • We have studied electrical properties and luminous efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs) with different buffer layer and cathodes in a temperature range of 10 K and 300 K. Four different device structures were made. The OLEDs are based on the molecular compounds, N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD) as a hole transport, tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum(III) (Alq$_3$) as an electron transport and omissive layer, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) :poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS ) as a buffer layer. And LiAl was used as a cathode. Among the devices, the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TPD/Alq$_3$/LiAl structure has a low energy-barrier height for charge injection and show a good luminous efficiency. We have got a highly efficient and low-voltage operating device using the conductive PEDOT:PSS and low work-function LiAl. From current-voltage characteristics with temperature variation, conduction mechanisms are explained SCLC (space charge limited current) and tunneling one. We have also studied energy barrier height and luminous efficiency at various temperature.

  • The purpose of this work is to develop, integrate, and implement an optical characterization method to evaluate physical properties in coated conductors and investigate the local distribution of the causes of degraded performance. The method that we selected at this moment is Raman scattering spectroscopy, which is accompanied with measurements of local supercurrent transport, phase composition, microstructure, and epitaxy quality for coated conductors that range in size up to multi-meter-length tapes and that embrace the entire tape embodiment (substrate through cap layer). The establishment of Raman spectroscopy as an on-line process monitoring tool is our eventual goal of research, but it requires very robust and cost-effective equipments. We analyzed $YBa_2Cu_3O_7(YBCO)$ thin films grown at various substrate temperatures by using Raman spectroscopy. YBCO films were grown by a high-rate electron-beam co-evaporation method. Raman spectra of YBCO films with lower-transport properties exhibit additional phonon modes at ${\sim}300cm^{-1}$, ${\sim}600cm^{-1}$ and ${\sim}630cm^{-1}$, which are related to second-phases such as $Ba_2Cu_3O_{5.9}$ and $BaCuO_2$. We propose a new method to characterize Raman spectra of coated conductors for an in-line quality control.
