  • This study presents nonlinear vibration of a cantilever beam subjected to electromagnetic forces. The dynamic responses of the beam show various nonlinear phenomena with the variation of the system parameters, such as the jump phenomenon, multiple solutions, and the movement of the natural frequency. In this study the nonlinear stiffness due to electromagnetic forces which depends on air gap size is measured experimentally, and the system is modeled by a single degree of freedom nonlinear dynamic system and solutions are solved numerically. The numerical results show good agreements with the experimental results, which demonstrate the nonlinearity of electromagnetic force. Finally the occurrences of the jump phenomenon and the first, second and fourth harmonic components are confirmed in using the method of multiple scales.

  • The structural control of Al-Si alloy, which was not studied among various electromagnetic processing of materials, was considered applying the alternating current and direct current magnetic flux density. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of electromagnetic vibration on the macro and microstructure of Al-Si alloy in order to develop a new process of structural control in Al-Si alloy. When the electromagnetic vibration is conducted for changing the shape of primary aluminum, at low frequency(>60Hz), the shape of dendrite is changed speroidal shape. When the electromagnetic vibration is conducted for changing the shape of eutectic silicon, the fact that a morphological change of the eutectic silicon from coarse platelet flakes to fine fiber shape is observed and the improvement of the mechanical properties is achieved with EMV (Electro Magnetic Vibration) process at high frequency(>500Hz).

  • This paper presents one of the methods for design to reduce the noise and vibration of 200kW motor for electric propulsion ship. One of the important factors affecting vibration of the motor is the resonance. The natural frequency and natural mode of the 200kW motor is analyzed by using FEM tool and impact test equipment to avoid the resonance. Also, compare FEM result with impact test result to make a reliable FE model of 200kW motor. In order to find out the effect of the noise and vibration of the motor by electromagnetic excitation force, conduct electromagnetic-structure coupled analysis. These characteristics are much useful to design 200kW motor for electric propulsion ship.

  • This paper presents a systematic optimization process for designing an electromagnetic vibration energy harvester using FEA(finite element analysis) to improve computational accuracy and efficiency. A static FEA is used in the optimization process where trend analysis in a short period of time is rather important than precise computation, while a dynamic FEA is used in the verification step for the final result where precise computation is more important. An electromechanical transduction factor can be calculated efficiently by using an approach to use the radial component of magnetic flux density directly instead of an approach to compute the flux density gradient. The proposed optimization process was verified through a case study where simulation and experiment results were compared.

  • This paper focuses on the modeling and analysis a novel two-axis rotary normal-stress electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density similar to a solenoid, but its torque output is nearly a linear function of both its driving current and rotation angle, showing that the actuator is ideal for FSM. In addition, the actuator is designed with a new cross topology armature and no additional axial force is generated when the actuator works. With flux leakage being involved in the actuator modeling properly, an accurate analytical model of the actuator, which shows the actuator's linear characteristics, is obtained via the commonly used equivalent magnetic circuit method. Finally, numerical simulation is presented to validate the analytical actuator model. It is shown that the analytical results are in a good agreement with the simulation results.

  • Since the change of the radial electromagnetic force is a main cause of noise and vibration of the SRM, this paper proposes a method to reduce the change of the electromagnetic force of an SRM. The technique is based on the control of the current shape associated with each phase using switches of the converter to drive an SRM. And we analyze the relation between the derivative of the radial electromagnetic force and the phase currents. A simulation is given to demonstrate our results.

  • This paper investigates the performance of an electromagnetic type active control engine mount (ACM) recently developed in the laboratory. The ACM employs the basic structure of the conventional hydraulic engine mount of which upper chamber is connected to a dual magnet electromagnetic actuator. The actuator, that essentially replaces the existing decoupler of the conventional passive hydraulic engine mount, actively controls the upper chamber pressure. Using the linearized ACM model incorporated with the actuator dynamics, we suggest an optimal design of ACM, maximizing the actuator efficiency as well as the vibration isolation efficiency.

  • In this paper free vibration analysis of symmetric and cross-ply elastic laminated shells based on FSDT was performed through discretization of equations of motion and boundary condition. Structural model of laminated composite cylindrical shells subjected to a combination of magnetic and thermal fields is developed via Hamilton's variational principle. These coupled equations of motion are based on the electromagnetic equations(Faraday, Ampere, Ohm, and Lorenz equations) and thermal equations which are involved in constitutive equations. Variations of dynamic characteristics of composite shells with applied magnetic field, temperature gradient, and stacking sequence are investigated and pertinent conclusions are derived.
