  • As a new fluoranthene derivative, a synthesis of benzo[k]fluoranthene was suggested, so new blue emitting materials, 7,12-diphenylbenzo[k] fluoranthene [DPBF] and 7,8,10- triphenylfluoranthene [TPF] were synthesized. $EL_{max}$ wavelength of the device using DPBF as an emitting layer was 436 and 454nm in the deepblue region, which are similar values with PL. The device that used DPBF as an emitting layer showed high efficiency of 2.11cd/A and the excellent color coordinate value of (0.161, 0.131) in deep-blue region.

  • To obtain the blue emission of powder electroluminescent device, the emission properties of ZnS:Cu were estimated by the variation of applied frequency and the addition of dye to ZnS:Cu phosphor. The variation of applied frequency was from 400 to 4kHz and the addition ratio of dye was from 0 to 5 weight percent respectively. The increment of applied frequency made that emission peaks were shifted from 500.5nm and 460nm at 400Hz to 490nm and 450nm at 4kHz. CIE coordinate system was shifted from x=0.1647, y=0.3711 at 400Hz to x=0.1543, y=0.1856 at 4kHz. On the basis of applied voltage 100V, 400Hz, the increment of addition ratio of dye also made that emission peak was shifted from 505nm(0wt%) to 490nm(5wt%) and the CIE coordinate system was shifted from x=0.1647, y=0.3711(0wt%) to x=0.1334, y=0.2363 (5wt%). The brightness was increased from 60 cd/$m^2$(400Hz) to 174 cd/$m^2$(4kHz) with increment of frequency. When the addition ratio of dye was above 1wt%, the brightness was decreased below 42% of initial brightness and changed from 60 cd/$m^2$(0wt%) to 20.84 cd/$m^2$(5wt%).

  • The $Mg._5Zn._5SiN_2:Tb$ and $Mg._5Zn._5SiN_2:Eu$ materials were synthesized and studied to develop new phosphors for thin-film electroluminescent device application. Photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence characteristics of the synthesized phosphors were similar to general emission spectra of Eu, Tb ion, respectively. The CIE color coordinates, threshold voltage and luminance of the $Mg._8Zn._2SiN_2:Eu$ thin-film electroluminescent device fabricated by electron-beam deposition system were x=0.47, y=0.46, 47V, and 23.5 cd/$cm^2$ at 80V, respectively. The capacitance-voltage and charge-voltage characteristics of the thin film electroluminescent devices were also measured.

  • White-light-emitting ZnS:Mn, Cu, Cl phosphors with spherical shape and the size of $20\;{\mu}m$ are successfully synthesized. They have the double phases of cubic and hexagonal structures. They are applied to electroluminescent (EL) devices by silk screen method with the following structure: $electrode/BaTiO_3$ insulator layer ($50{\sim}60\;{\mu}m$)/ ZnS:Mn, Cu, Cl phosphor layer ($30{\sim}50\;{\mu}m$)/ITO glass. The EL devices are driven with the voltage of 100 V and the frequency of 400 Hz. The EL devices show the three emission peaks. The blue and green emission bands are originated from $CICu^{2+}$ transition and $ClCu^+$ transition, respectively. The yellow emission band results from $^4T^6A$ transition of $Mn^{2+}$ ion. As an increase of Cu concentrations, the blue and green emission intensities decrease whereas the yellow emission intensity increases; the quality becomes warm white. It is due to the energy transfer from the blue and green bands to the yellow band.

  • We fabricated electroluminescent(EL) devices which have a blended single emitting layer containing poly(N-vinylcarbazole)[PVK] and poly(3-dodecylthiophene)[P3DoDT]. The molar ratio between P3DoDT and PVK changed with 1:0, 2:1 and 1:1. To improve the external quantum efficiency of EL devices, we applied insulating layer, LiF layer, between polymer emitting layer and Al electrode. All of the devices emit orange-red light and its can be explained that the energy transfer occurs from PVK to P3DoDT. In the voltage-current and voltage-light power characteristics of devices applied LiF layer, current and light power drastically increased with increasing applied voltage. In the consequence of the result, the external quantum efficiency of the devices that have a molar ratio 1:1 with LiF layer was 35 times larger than that of the device without LiF layer at 6V.

  • A novel zinc complex, Zn(phen)q, was synthesized from 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (q) as organic ligands and its electroluminescent (EL) properties were characterized. The structure of Zn(phen)q was elucidated by FT-IR, UV-Vis and XPS. The complex Zn(phen)q showed thermal stability up to $300^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen flow, which was measured by TGA and DSC. The photoluminescence (PL) of the Zn(phen)q was measured from the THF solution and the solid film on quartz substrate. The PL emission of Zn(phen)q exhibited green light centered at about 505nm. The EL devices were fabricated by the vacuum deposition. The EL devices having the structure of ITO/a-NPD/Zn(phen)q/Li:Al were studied, where 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]biphenyl(a-NPD) used as a hole transport layer(HTL). a-NPD has high Tg of $96^{\circ}C$ and thus makes the device thermally stable. The EL emission of Zn(phen)q exhibited also green light centered at 532nm.

  • Powder electroluminescent device (PELD) structured conventionally dielectric and phosphor layer, between electrode and their layer fabricated by screen printing splaying or spin coating method. To promote performance of PELDs, we approached the experiments for different structure and thickness variation of PELD. Thickness variation($30{\mu}m{\sim}130{\mu}m$) was taken. To investigate electrical and optical properties of PELDs, EL spectrum, transferred charge density using Sawyer-Tower's circuit brightness was measured. Variation of structure in PELDs was as follows: WK-1 (ITO/BaTiO3/ZnS:Cu/Silver paste), WK-2 (ITO/BaTiO3/ZnS:Cu/BaTiO3/ZnS:Silver paste), WK-3 (ITO/BaTiO3/ZnS:Cu/BaTiO3/Silver paste), WK-4(ITO/BaTiO3+ZnS:Cu/Silver paste) As a result, structure of the highest brightness appeared WK-4 possessed 60 ${\mu}m$ thickness. The brightness was 2719 cd/$m^2$ at 100V, 400Hz.

  • In order to realize full color display, two approaches were used. The first method is the patterning of red, green, and blue emitters using a selective deposition. Another approach is based on a white-emitting diode, from which the three primary colors could be obtained by micro-patterned color filters. White-light-emitting organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are attracting much attention recently due to potential applications such as backlights in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) or other illumination purposes. In order for the white OLEDs to be used as backlights in LCDs, the light emission should be bright and have Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). For obtaining white emission from OLEDs, different colors should be mixed with proper balances even though there are a few different methods for mixing colors. In this study, we will report a white organic electroluminescent device based on an incomplete energy transfer. In which the blue and green emission come from the same layer via incomplete energy transfer.

  • The SrS:Cu, Ag thin film electroluminescient devices were fabricated on $AlTiO_3$/ITO/glass substrates by electron-beam evaporation. The emission spectrum of the device was about 460 nm with $\chi$=0.20, y=0.29 in the CIE color coordinator. It was found that the emission spectrum was saturated to pure blue color when Ag sensitizer was doped in SrS:CuCl phosphors. The luminance of the device was increased by increasing the sulfur pressure. The measured luminance was saturated with 430 cd/$m^2$at the applied voltage of 90 V and the maximum luminance was 580 cd/$m^2$at 110V. The polarization charge and conduction charge of the devices were found to be found to be about $3.5\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and $7.4\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively.

  • A water-soluble conducting polymer (CPP400 Paste) containing a derivative of polythiophene with several dopant was investigated as an anode material for organic electroluminescent devices. The device of ITO/CPP 400 Paste/TPD/$Alq_3$/Li:Al was fabricated, where CPP 400 Paste films were prepared by spin coating and TPD and $Alq_3$, films were prepared by vacuum evaporation. It was found that the turn-on voltage, current density, and luminance of the devices were dependent upon the thickness of CPP 400 Paste film in the Electroluminescent and current-voltage characteristics of the devices. This phenomena were explained by the energy level diagram of the device with the energy levels of the CPP400 Paste obtained by cyclic voltammetric method.
