Cutaneous electrogastrography is the measurement of electrical activity of the stomach on the abdominal surface. The validity of cutaneous electrogastrography is dependent upon the quality of the recording technique. The locations of electrodes are an important issue. We examined the influences of the inter-electrode distance of bipolar leads on electrogastrography measurements. The sensitivity distributions of EGG leads were calculated based on a 2D body fat model and evaluated according to the region of interest sensitivity ratio (ROISR). We simulated the ROISR of the inter-electrode distance in relation to various body fat thicknesses. The distance between the electrodes was proportional to the distance between the ROI and the surface of the abdomen. The results imply that inter-electrode distance can be applied in electrogastrography according to human body fat thickness.
Purpose: Electrogastrography is a method of measuring action potentials of the stomach. The purpose of this study was to investigate early postoperative changes in the electrogastrography and determine the correlation between electrogastrography and quality of life of patients with stomach cancer who underwent distal gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: This study analyzed 20 patients with stomach cancer who underwent electrogastrography and quality of life was measured 1, 12, and 24 weeks after the operation. Quality of life-C30 version 3.0 and quality of life-STO22, were used. Results: Fasting and postprandial mean dominant frequency at 1 week after the operation was 2.7 and 2.7 cycles per minute, and 2.8 and 2.7 cycles per minute at 12 weeks, 2.6 and 2.8 cycles per minute at 24 weeks. Fasting and postprandial mean dominant power at 1 week was 36.5 and 36.4 dB, 36.3 and 40.1 dB at 12 weeks and 40.9 and 42.3 dB at 24 weeks. The percentage of tachygastria was increased whereas the percentage of bradygradia was decreased during the postoperative periods (P<0.05). Global health, physical, emotional and social functioning scales were improved, but role and cognitive functioning were not changed. Pain, insomnia, diarrhea and financial difficulties were significantly improved according to the postoperative periods (P<0.05). The correlation between the STO22 and electrogastrography parameters was not significant (P>0.05). Conclusions: These may suggest that electrogastrography is a simple and noninvasive method and may be applicated for evaluating motility and autonomic functions of the remnant stomach.
Background: The consequences of disordered breathing patterns are not only distressing to the patient but also expensive to our health care systems if they are not diagnosed and treated. So we performed this study to investigate clinical significants trough gigong, yoga and hyperventilation in oriental medicine and westen medicine Objective: To review the relationship of electrogastrography with autonomic nervous system and to study its clinical application. Method: We investigate the research results through internet search engine, Pubmed. Conclusion: Electrogastrography is a reliable, non-invasive method for recording gastric myoelectrical activity and is used for objectification of diagnosis related to gastric peristalsis. Gastric myoelectrical activity seem to involve autonomic nervous system, especially parasympathetic nervous system. The study should be continuing about relationship between electrogastrography and autonomic nervous system.
Background & Object : Postprandial epigastric fullness is one of common symptoms in functional dyspepsia, but its pathophysiological mechanism has still been unknown. In this study, its association between postprandial epigastric fullness and pyloric valve disturbance was studied through analysis of bowel sounds and electrogastrography. Methods : Bowel sounds and electrogastrography were recorded together for fasting 15 min and postprandial 40 min. Parameters of bowel soundincluding motility index, sound to sound interval, standard deviation of sound to sound interval, sounds per minute, % of bowel sound, sound length, intensity, dominant frequency of sounds, and postprandial / fasting ratio of dominant frequency of sounds were analyzed with a specialized program. By electrogastrography, regularity of slow waves and power ratio were obtained. Results : Significances of bowel sounds appeared in motility index (p=0.046), dominant frequency of fasting (p=0.048), postprandial (p=0.003), and the ratio of postprandial/fasting (p=0.000); those of EGG parameters were shown in postprandial regularity of slow waves (p=0.006) and power ratio (p=0.011). Conclusion : Pyloric valve disturbance was a cause of postprandial epigastric fullness in patients with functional dyspepsia. Analysis of bowel sound might be useful in diagnosing its existence.
Objective : To review the method, parameters, system of electrogastrography and to study its oriental medical application. Method : We investigate the research results through internet search engines such as Pubmed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure. Conclusion : Electrogastrography is believed to be of great use to the verification of treatment effect of herbal medicine that is used in internal medicine and neuropsychiatry, along with the objectification and quantification of diagnosis of oriental medicine related to gastric peristalsis and balance of autonomic nervous system. I would therefore like to conclude that there should be continued study and active application of electrogastrography in the wide variety of oriental medicine.
Objectives : Functional dyspepsia is a type of disease characterized by bothersome postprandial fullness, early satiation, epigastric pain and burning without structural gastrointestinal disease. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of functional dyspepsia patients and evaluate changes in symptoms, quality of life, and electrogastrography parameters before and after oriental medical interventions. Methods : We recruited forty-six functional dyspepsia patients who visited gastroenterology clinic in the oriental medicine hospital of Kyung Hee University between November 2009 and February 2011. Patients were assessed for their frequency of dyspepsia (based on short form-Leeds Dyspepsia Questionnaire: SF-LDQ), quality of life (based on functional dyspepsia-related quality of life questionnaire: FD-QoL), gastric motility (based on electrogastrography: EGG) on the first visit. Then, the effect of oriental medical interventions was evaluated using EGG on the second visit. Results : The majority of patients had symptoms of nausea and indigestion. The largest decrease in EGG parameters was found in the indigestion group. The frequency of regurgitation and postprandial EGG power % bradygastria showed a significant correlation. Also, significant correlations were found between some items of FD-QoL and some EGG parameters. Compared to the EGG parameters before oriental medical interventions, some parameters after treatment had positive results, implying the improvement of gastric motility disorder. We also found improvement of EGG parameters in both digestant medicinal group and digestant combined with qi-tonifying medicinal group. Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that clinical application of EGG can be an objective diagnostic tool in functional dyspepsia patients visiting oriental medical hospital.
Background & Aims : The aim of this study was to investigate the change of dominant power with observation of gastric myoelectrical activity and its parameter linkage in electrogastrography. Methods : Electrogastrography was performed on a total of 123 subjects (113 patients with functional dyspepsia, 10 healthy controls) for 30 min in fasting state and 50 min in postprandial state. Average myoelectrical activity per frequency and accumulated electrical activity of 5 min duration in each bradygastria, normogastria, and tachygastria were measured at the moment of frequency switchover of slow wave. Assumed parameter linkages were also investigated among dominant frequency, % of normal regularity, and dominant power (or power ratio). Results : Average myoelectrical activity per frequency was highest in bradygastria (mean 1.10-1.47 Volt/s), next highest in normogastria (mean 0.50-0.82 Volt/s), and lowest in tachygastria (mean 0.44-0.47 Volt/s). Average accumulated myoelectrical activity was highest in normogastria (mean 114.90-126.29 Volt/ss), next highest in tachygastria (mean 71.02-90.00 Volt/ss), and lowest in bradygastria (mean 12.93-51.94 Volt/ss). Significance of parameter linkages were noted in dominant frequency (p< 0.01) and in % of normal regularity (p< 0.01), but not in dominant power in case of frequency shift from bradygastria to normogastria (p=0.376). Conclusion : Dominant power is not a parameter that reflects the gastric myoelectrical activity related with only gastric contraction. Bradygastric dominant power does not follow the inter-parameter linkage of electrogastrography for gastric motility assessment.
Background & Object : The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of electrogastrography on differential diagnosis of deficiency or excess Condition in patients with functional dyspepsia Methods : Selected symptoms for diagnosis of deficiency and excess in functional dyspepsia have been reviewed in some literatures, notably within Oriental medicine, Donguibogam and Gogeumdoseojipseong-uibujeolrok. This is what was investigated in this study. 93 patients (male 32, female 61) were divided into three groups; Non-pain group, Pre-treatment pain group (chief complain was abdominal pain at the first medical examination), and Mid-treatment pain group(they had no pain at the time of first medical examination, but showed abdominal pain within two weeks). 10 healthy people participated as normal controls. Gastric motility were recorded and analyzed using electrogastrography during fasting and postprandial period. In assessment, effectiveness was divided into validity, sensitivity and specificity. Results : Epigastric pain reflected the tendency for excess condition in comprehensive diagnosis, which was linked with postprandial arrhythmia in electrogastrography(p=0.001). Postprandial arrhythmia detected abdominal pain with a validity of 78.6%, a sensitivity of 79.2%, and a specificity of 78%(p<0.001). Conclusions : Results 1Tom Postprandial arrhythmia in electrogastrography support that the index of excess condition in the comprehensive diagnosis of symptoms is useful for patients with functional dyspepsia.
Background & Object : The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of electrogastrography in the diagnosis field of traditional medicine through a study of the relationship between gastric motility and health condition based on oriental medicine diagnostic theory in functional dyspepsia. Method : 86 patients (male 27, female 59) with functional dyspepsia and 10 healthy control subjects (male 5, female 5) were involved in the investigation. The disease information of functional dyspepsia (based on Rome criteria II) was used for dyspeptic index and scores were obtained from the comprehensive diagnosis of Qui, Xue, Shui was applied as index for health condition, those were all investigated by questionnaire. Gastric motility were recorded and analyzed using electrogastrography in fasting and postprandial period. Results : The total score of comprehensive diagnosis of Qui Xue Shui was influenced by the number of functional dyspepsia symptoms (p=0.026). In terms of electrogastrographical parameters, both postpranial normal slow waves regularity(p=0.003) and power ratio (p=0.001) in the patients had the statistical significance and they showed an incremental inverse correlation with the number of symptoms. Dominant frequency and fasting normal slow waves regularity ratio had no statistical significance. Conclusion : Results suggest that electrogastrography is useful in evaluating the health condition of patient by comprehensive diagnosis of Qui Xue Sui.
Electrogastrography(EGG), the cutaneous recording of the myoelectrical activity of the stomach using surface electrodes, is attractive due to its non-invasiveness. We propose feasible methods to detect tile gastric contraction by vector analysis of the surface EGG signals obtained from three paired electrodes. The amplitude and direction of the calculated EGG vector were analyzed and compared with the gastric contraction signals such as the strain gauge signal from the gastric serosa in dog. From the vector analysis of the EGG signal, we found a typical change of the amplitude and direction of the EGG vector, which can indicate occurrences of the gastric contraction.
