Rapid Detection of Salmonella enteritidis in Pork Samples with Impedimetric Biosensor: Effect of Electrode Spacing on Sensitivity

  • Frequent outbreaks of foodborne illness have been increasing the awareness of food safety. Conventional methods for pathogen detection and identification are labor-intensive and take days to complete. Some immunological, rapid assays are developed, but these assays still require prolonged enrichment steps. Recently developed biosensors have shown potential for the rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. In this study, an impedimetric biosensor was developed for rapid detection of Salmonella entritidis in food sample. To develop the biosensor, an interdigitated microelectrode (IME) was fabricated by using a semiconductor fabrication process. Anti-Salmonella antibodies were immobilized based on neutravidin-biotin binding on the surface of the IME to form an active sensing layer. To evaluate the effect of electrode gap on sensitivity of the sensor, 3 types of sensors with different electrode gap sizes (2, 5, and $10{\mu}m$) were fabricated and tested. The impedimetric biosensor could detect $10^3\;CFU/mL$ of Salmonella in pork meat extract with an incubation time of 5 min. This method may provide a simple, rapid, and sensitive method to detect foodborne pathogens.

  • AC spark discharge voltage of SF6/C02and SF6/N2 containing various mixed rate in volume percent (1, 5 and 10%) of SF6 in non-uniform fields are investigated. The needle to plane electrode gap spacing was 5 and 10 mm, and the gas pressure was varied within the range of 0.1${\sim}$0.7 MPa. We have observed a N-characteristic typical for the electronegative gases even in gas mixtures of 1% SF6 with CO2 and N2 as buffer gases. Especially, the materials of the needle electrode affect the insulation properties of the gas mixtures drastically. On the contrary to the case of needle electrodes made by mild steel or high carbon steel, the N-characteristics are hardly perceived in the case of stainless steel needle in this experiment.

FE model of electrical resistivity survey for mixed ground prediction ahead of a TBM tunnel face

  • Accurate prediction of mixed ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face is of vital importance for safe excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Previous studies have primarily focused on electrical resistivity surveys from the ground surface for geotechnical investigation. In this study, an FE (finite element) numerical model was developed to simulate electrical resistivity surveys for the prediction of risky mixed ground conditions in front of a tunnel face. The proposed FE model is validated by comparing with the apparent electrical resistivity values obtained from the analytical solution corresponding to a vertical fault on the ground surface (i.e., a simplified model). A series of parametric studies was performed with the FE model to analyze the effect of geological and sensor geometric conditions on the electrical resistivity survey. The parametric study revealed that the interface slope between two different ground formations affects the electrical resistivity measurements during TBM excavation. In addition, a large difference in electrical resistivity between two different ground formations represented the dramatic effect of the mixed ground conditions on the electrical resistivity values. The parametric studies of the electrode array showed that the proper selection of the electrode spacing and the location of the electrode array on the tunnel face of TBM is very important. Thus, it is concluded that the developed FE numerical model can successfully predict the presence of a mixed ground zone, which enables optimal management of potential risks.

취약대가 존재하는 제방의 누수 탐지를 위한 전기비저항 탐사의 적용성 연구 (A Study on Application of Electrical Resistivity Survey to Detect the Leakage of Embankment with Weak Zone)

  • 댐 및 저수지 제방의 누수현상은 통관 주변에서 주로 일어나며 평상 시에는 제방에 큰 영향을 미치지 않지만, 호우나 장마철과 같이 저수지 수위가 상승하면 제방의 붕괴 위험을 가져온다. 따라서 이러한 수맥과 경로를 조사하는 것은 재해 예방과 제방 관리의 측면에서 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 수치적인 방법과 실험적인 방법을 사용하여 통관이 취약대로 작용하는 댐 및 제방에서의 누수현상을 분석하였다. 누수탐지에는 전기비저항 탐사를 사용하여 그 유용성을 검토하였다. 수치해석의 결과에서는 취약대의 크기와 위치에 따라 전극 간격의 설정이 중요함을 보여주었고, 모형제방의 누수실험에서는 전극간격을 0.3m로 쌍극자 배열을 사용하는 것이 가장 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 판단되었다. 누수현상의 분석을 통하여 댐 및 제방시설물의 누수탐지에 전기 비저항 탐사가 유용함을 확인하였다.

폐CNT를 혼입한 시멘트 복합체의 강도 및 열전달 특성에 대한 기초적 연구 (Fundamental Study on the Strength and Heat Transferring Charcteristic of Cement Composite with Waste CNT)

  • 동절기 콘크리트 포장체의 블랙아이스 발생위험을 낮추고 동결에 의한손상을 방지할 목적으로 콘크리트의 전도저항성을 활용하여 자기 히팅 콘크리트를 개발하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 분말형과 액상형 폐CNT와 전도촉진을 위해 폐음극재를 사용하여 강도변화와 온도 발열특성을 평가하고자 하였다. 액상형 폐CNT가 모르타르내에서 분산정도가 효과적이고, 강도저하가 작게 발생하는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 모르타르에 스틸매쉬, 구리포일과 구리선을 전극으로 적용하여 DC 24 V를 공급하였으며, 폐CNT, 폐음극재과 탄소섬유 혼입율에 따른 온도변화 특성을 평가하였다. 또한 선정된 최적배합으로부터 전극간격에 따른 온도 특성을 평가하여 AC 50 V 까지는 전극간격 100 mm 까지는 충분한 발열 특성을 갖는 것을 확인하였다.

환형 배치된 코로나 전극에 의한 이온풍 발생 특성 (The Characteristics of the Ionic Wind Generation with Corona Electrodes Installed in Form of the Ring)

  • The electric power can be converted into the mechanical power by a corona discharge system. This way has not stronger force than a electric motor. But it has been applied in various industrial fields because of many advantages, no moving parts, smaller noise, simpler structure, minimizing et al. In this paper, corona discharge system with multiple corona electrode installed in form of the ring, has been studied by focusing on the electrical and mechanical characteristics. Intensity of the corona discharge depends on applied electric field, and electric field is related to the applied voltage, discharge gap spacing(s), distance between each corona electrodes(d). As a result, in the case d/s=0.9, most intensive discharge occurred in this experiments. In the region of d/s<0.9, ionic wind velocity has saturation value in spite of decreasing corona current, because each ion velocities increase by the increasing electric field.

  • SAW filters of transversal type were fabricated on some piezoelectric substrate of the LN 128 $^{\circ}$ Y-X waters through the simulation in which the number of IDT and window function were changed for the required frequency, and the mask making. Their IDT spacing and width were 1.63$\mu\textrm{m}$, 1.239$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. Titanium thin films having different thicknesses were introduced between the Al electrode and the substrate for improving the power resistance strength due to its high temperature durability and good adhesion characteristics. All of specimens showed similar insertion loss results, which means the possibility of introducing the Ti layer though it is known to have a higher resistivity leading to a worse insertion loss result. Ti inserted specimens had a better power durability than that of pure Al electrode though their thickness had no effect on the performance.

  • In this paper, ozonizer of neon discharge tube type( Neolamp ) by using silent discharge has been designed and manufactured. The discharge and ozone generation characteristics of Neolamp have been studied with variation of turn-on number( N ) of Neolamp, quality( Q ) and shape of external electrode. The discharge voltage is proportional to gap spacing of spiral external electrode( G ) for constant applied volatge. The discharge current is inversely proportional to G for constant applied volatge. The ozone concentration is inversely proportional to Q and G. Also, ozone concentration and generation are proportional to N. The sterilization characteristics of Escherichia coil have been obtained more than 97[%] at $1.30[mg/{\ell}]$ of liquid ozone concentration.

  • A silent type ozone generator using water surface has been studied and improved its ozone generation characteristics by the controlling the height of Taylor cone by installing a mesh electrode, a dielectric bed of glass beads in the just under th surface of the water. The current-voltage characteristics and characteristics of ozone generation quantity of the test system were investigated and discharge current oscillograms of the each cases of the mesh electrode and the beds were observed and compared each other to analyze the discharge conditions. The Taylor cone height could be the cause of the discharge bridge to decrease the ozone generation on the discharge spacing. In this study, the hight of Taylor cone could be reduced greatly by installing the mesh and the glass beads bed just under the water surface. Therefore a higher ozone generation also could be obtained.

에어로졸 공정에 의한 Multiwall carbon nanotube/Graphene 복합체 제조 및 슈퍼커패시터 특성평가 (Synthesis of Multiwall Carbon Nanotube/Graphene Composite by Aerosol Process and Its Characterization for Supercapacitors)

  • A multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/graphene (GR) composite was synthesized for an enhanced supercapacitor. Aerosol spray pyrolysis (ASP) was employed to synthesize the MWCNT/GR composites using a colloidal mixture of MWCNT and graphene oxide (GO). The effect of the weight ratio of the MWCNT/GO on the particle properties including the morphology and layered structure were investigated. The morphology of MWCNT/GR composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball, and the average composite size was about $5{\mu}m$. MWCNT were uniformly dispersed in GR sheets and the MWCNT not only increase the basal spacing but also bridge the defects for electron transfer between GR sheets. Thus, it was increasing electrolyte/electrode contact area and facilitating transportation of electrolyte ion and electron in the electrode. Electrochemical data demonstrate that the MWCNT/GR (weight ratio=0.1) composite possesses a specific capacitance of 192 F/g at 0.1 A/g and good rate capability (88% capacity retention at 4 A/g) using two-electrode testing system.
