This paper describes the measurement and analysis of ground impedance according to arrangement of auxiliary probe around ground grid using the fall-of-potential method and the testing techniques to minimize the measuring errors are proposed. The fall-of-potential method involves passing a current between a ground electrode and a current probe, and then measuring the voltage between a ground electrode and a potential probe. To minimize interelectrode influences due to mutual resistances, the current probe is a generally placed at a substantial distance from the ground electrode under test. In order to analyze the effects of ground impedance due to the arrangement of auxiliary probe and frequency, ground impedances were measured in case that the arrangements of auxiliary probe were straight line, perpendicular line, and horizontal line. The distance of current probe was located from 10[m] to 200[m] and the measuring frequency was ranged from 55[Hz] to 513[Hz]. As a consequence, the ground impedance increases with increasing the distance from the ground electrode to the point to be tested, but the ground impedance decreases with increasing the frequency.
This paper presents a frequency-dependent cell impedance analysis chip for use in cancer and normal cell discrimination. The previous cell impedance analysis chips for flowing cells cannot allow enough time for cell-to-electrode contact to monitor frequency-dependent impedance response. Another type of the previous cell impedance analysis chips for the cells clamped by membranes need complex sample control for making stable cell-to-electrode contact. We present a new impedance analysis chip using the microchamber array, on which a PDMS cover is placed to make stable cell-to-electrode contact for the individual cell trapped in each microchamber; thus achieving frequency-dependent single-cell impedance analysis without complex sample control. Compared to the normal cells, the magnitude of NHBE cells is $60.07{\sim}97.41k{\Omega}$ higher than A549 cells in the frequency range of 95.6 kHz~2MHz and the phase of NHBE is $3.96^{\circ}{\sim}20.8^{\circ}$ higher than A549 cells in the frequency range of 4.37 kHz~2MHz, respectively. It is demonstrated experimentally that the impedance analysis chip performs frequency-dependent cell impedance analysis by making stable cell-to-electrode contact with simple sample control; thereby applicable to the normal cell and cancer cell discrimination.
For the surge currents like lightning or ground fault currents containing high frequency components which cause the electromagnetic interferences for the electronic devices and communication equipment, the grounding impedances give the significantly composite characteristics which are dependent on the frequency of surge currents. In this paper, the analytical model and method for determining the optimal length of the newly developed coaxial type carbon ground electrode which has a little fluctuation in grounding impedance with frequency. The length of minimizing the fluctuation of grounding impedance by changing frequency from 100[Hz] to 1[MHz] was determined, and the validity of this proposed method was confirmed by comparing with the simulated and measured data.
This paper describes the development and assessment of conductive fabric sensor for evaluating knee movement using bio-impedance measurement method. The proposed strip-typed conductive fabric sensor is compared with a dot-typed Ag/AgCl electrode for evaluating validity under knee movement condition. Subjects are composed of ten males($26.6{\pm}2.591$) who have not had problems on their knee. The strip-typed conductive fabric sensor is analyzed by correlation and reliability between a dot-typed Ag/AgCl electrode and the strip-typed conductive fabric sensor. The difference of bio-impedance between a dot-typed Ag/AgCl electrode and the strip-typed conductive fabric sensor averages $7.067{\pm}13.987\;{\Omega}$ As the p-value is under 0.0001 in 99% of t-distribution, the strip-typed conductive fabric sensor is correlated with a dot-typed Ag/AgCl electrode by SPSS software. The strip-typed conductive fabric sensor has reliability when it is compared with a dot-typed Ag/AgCl electrode because most of bio-impedance values are in ${\pm}1.96$ standard deviation by Bland-Altman Analysis. As a result, the strip-typed conductive fabric sensor can be used for assessing knee movement through bio-impedance measurement method as a dot-typed Ag/AgCl electrode. Futhermore, the strip-typed conductive fabric sensor is available for wearable circumstances, applications and industries in the near future.
The current distribution passing through grounding electrode is required for calculating an impedance of grounding electrode using the electromagnetic field model. In this paper the numerical calculation for currents passing through a grounding electrode as a function of frequency was given. The proposed approach is based on the wire antenna model(AM) in the frequency domain. The Pocklington's equation driven from the wire antenna theory was numerically calculated by the Galerkin's method. The triangle function was applied to both the basis function and the weighting function. The current distribution of a horizontal ground electrode was simulated in MATLAB. Also these results were compared with the data obtained from the CDEGS HIFREQ calculation.
The anodic reaction of hydrogen/oxygen gas mixture at platinum or palladium electrode interfacing with a solid polymer electrolyte was investigated using AC impedance method. The impedance spectrum of the electrode reactions of the mixture depends on the gas composition, electrode roughness, the mode of electrochemical operation and the cell potential. For electrolysis mode of operation, the spectrum taken for the reaction on a rough platinum electrode for the gas mixture revealed clearly that the local anodic reduction of oxygen gas takes place concurrently with the anodic oxidation of hydrogen gas.
In this paper, we introduce an electrocardiogram (ECG) system designed to solve problems caused by wetgels and motion artifacts in measuring active movement. The system is called a dry-contact ECG and was designed by considering impedance matching between skin and electrode as well as the frictional electricity between electrode and clothes. In order to create the system, we measured impedance on the skin-electrode interface, and the result was applied to the electronic circuit scheme. Moreover, we added an electrode on the back of the measurement electrode to make a flow path to ground the electrical noise. The final ECG circuit and novel electrode were used to detect real human cardiac signals from a subject who was tested while standing still and walking. The signals obtained from the two activities were nicely shaped, without any motion artifact noise. We took electrode size into account in this study because the impedance depended on the area of the electrode. An electrode of 50 mm diameter showed the best curve for the ECG signal without any electrical noise.
The conventional urodynamic monitoring is fulfilled by artificially filling a bladder with saline. Generally. it is difficult to evaluate the physiological functions of the storage and voiding of a bladder. With this aim, we constructed an ambulatory urodynamic monitoring (AUM) system and proposed a novel method estimating abdominal pressure by measuring bio-impedance variations. Our system was clinically evaluated for 10 patients. It turned out to be that as the intensity of the abdomen contraction increased, the amplitude of bio-impedance signal and the RMS value of EMG increased more as compared to those who observed during the rest mode. Also, we determined the optimum electrode pair for estimating the abdominal pressure using bio-impedance method and consequently compared with the conventional methods. Because impedance changes differ from a weight, a height, contractile force, volume of muscle and blood other or whatever of individuals, it was quantified in terms of impedance change, correlation coefficient and SNR Our results showed the optimum electrode pair (1,9) which could detect impedance changes due to the increase of the intensity in the abdominal pressure. The correlation coefficient and quadratic function between the RMS values of EMG and the impedance changes were 0.87 and $y=0.0014x^2+0.0620x+0.6958$, respectively. Thus, our system demonstrated that the abdominal pressure could be measured noninvasively and conveniently by simply estimating bio-impedance values. We propose that this optimum electrode configuration would be useful for the future studies involving the handy measurements of abdominal pressure with our suggested ambulatory urodynamics monitoring system.
Improvement of the selectivity of nonenzymatic glucose based on mesoporous platinum ($H_1$-ePt) by using A.C. impedance is reported. The idea of the present work is based on the novel effect of the mesoporous electrode that the apparent exchange current due to glucose oxidation remarkably grows although the reaction kinetics on the surface is still sluggish. It is expected that the enlarged apparent exchange current on the mesoporous electrode can raise the sensitivity of admittance in A.C. impedance to glucose concentration. At a low frequency, A.C. impedance could become more powerful. The admittance at 0.01 Hz is even more sensitive to glucose than to ascorbic acid while amperometry exhibits the inverse order of sensitivity. This is the unique behavior that is neither observed by A.C. impedance on flat platinum electrode nor obtained by amperometry. The study shows how the combination of A.C. impedance and nano-structured surface can be applied to the detection of sluggish reaction such as electrochemical oxidation of glucose.
