Distance relay plays an important role in the protection of transmission lines. The application of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices, such as the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), could affect the performance of the distance relay because of compensation effect. This paper analyzes the application of distance relay on the protection of a transmission line containing STATCOM. New setting principles for different protection zones are proposed based on this analysis. A typical 500 kV transmission system employing STATCOM is modeled using Matlab/Simulink. The impact of STATCOM on distance protection scheme is studied for different fault types, fault locations, and system configurations. Based on simulation results, the performance of distance relay is evaluated. The setting principle can be verified for the transmission line with STATCOM.

For power system protection, the distance relay settings are important. Apparent factor is a necessary parameter in distance relay settings. Apparent factors have to be calculated when setting the distance relays and doing the resetting in case of configuration change in power system. The problem is that the current method to calculate apparent factor requires tools and plenty of time to do fault analysis and this method is complex especially in case of configuration change. Therefore this paper proposes a fast algorithm to calculate apparent factor without the fault analysis. Test results prove that this algorithm is simple and accurate by simulation.

Digital technology has advanced significantly over the years both in terms of software tools and hardware availability. It is now applied extensively throughout many area of electrical engineering including protective relaying in power systems. Digital relays have numerous advantages over traditional analog relays, such as the ability to accomplish what is difficult or impossible using analog relays. Although non real-time simulators like PSCAD/EMTDC are employed to test the algorithms, such simulations are disadvantaged in that they cannot test the relay dynamically. Hence, real-time simulators like RTDS are used. However, the latter requires large space and is very expensive. This paper uses EMTP MODELS to simulate the power system and the distance relay. The distance relay algorithm is implemented and the distance relay is interfaced with a test power system. The distance relay's performance is then assessed interactively under various fault types, fault distances and fault inception angles. The test results show that we can simulate the distance relay effectively and we can examine the operation of the distance relay very closely including its drawbacks/limitations by using EMTP MODELS. Equally important, this approach facilitates any changes that need to be carried out in order to enhance the Distance Relay under test/examination.

Distance relay is widely used for the protection of long transmission line. Most of distance relay used to calculate line impedance by measuring voltage and current using DFT. So if there is a computation error due to the influence of phasor by DC offset component, due to excessive vibration by measuring line impedance, overreach or underreach can be occurs, and then abnormal and non-operation of distance relay can be issue. It is very important to implement the robust distance relaying that is not affected by DC offset component. This paper describes an enhanced distance relaying based on the DC offset elimination filter to minimize the effects of DC offset on a long transmission line. The proposed DC offset elimination filter has not need any prior information. The phase angle delay of the proposed DC offset filter did not occurred and the gain error was not found. The enhanced distance relay uses fault current as well as residual current. The behavior of the proposed distance relaying using off-line simulation has been verified using data about several fault conditions generated by the ATP simulation software.

In this paper, we propose a robust speech recognition system under noisy environments. Since the presence of noise severely degrades the performance of speech recognition system, it is important to design the robust speech recognition method against noise. The proposed method adopts a new distance measure technique based on stochastic probability instead of conventional method using minimum error. For evaluating the performance of the proposed method, we compared it with conventional distance measure for the 10-isolated Korean digits with car noise. Here, the proposed method showed better recognition rate than conventional distance measure for the various car noisy environments.

This paper proposes a new method to improve performance of AdaBoost by using a distance weight function to increase the accuracy of its machine learning processes. The proposed distance weight algorithm improves classification in areas where the original binary classifier is weak. This paper derives the new algorithm's optimal solution, and it demonstrates how classifier accuracy can be improved using the proposed Distance Sensitive AdaBoost in a simulation experiment of pedestrian detection.
This paper defines the concept of “protectability” for the performance evaluation of distance relay considering its sensitivity and selectivity. The paper starts from the probabilistic modeling of the errors, and based on this model, a detailed explanation of protectability calculation for each zone of the distance relay is presented. An effect of the Weighting Rate and the Measurement Deviation on the protectability evaluation is also given. By considering this effect, the optimization of relay setting can be realized. The proposed method is applied to a typical model system to show its effectiveness
Stearic acid LB films was deposited by LB technique. The deposition status of LB films were verified by UV absorbance which was increased in proportion to the number of layers. And, I-V characteristics were measured to investigate the response properties between LB films and organic gases using the distance of electrodes. The current was increased with the applied voltage but decreased as increasing the distance of electrodes. The conductivity of stearic acid LB films using the distance of electrodes was $10^{-8}$[S/cm], which corresponds to that of the semiconductor.
This paper presents an estimation of relative distance and angle from a mobile robot to an object. From the number of pulses required to make the mobile robot move to the feature point, we find the relative distance and angle between the mobile robot and the object. The proposed method shows a practical way of measuring the relative distance and angle between the mobile robot and an object without setting up real world coordinate system.
This paper presents a new distance relay modeling techniques which avoids unnecessary computational procedure. A general-purpose simulation language, called MODELS, has been added to the software ATP(Alternative Transients Program) providing a new option to perform numerical and logical manipulations of variables of an electrical system. This language has been designed to replace the previous option TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems) which permits to simulate a control system in conjunction with a large power network. One purpose of this study is to build a structure for modeling of digital distance relays within EMTP MODELS. Contrary to the traditional methods, the new method using MODELS reduce the number of simulation steps in modeling the distance relay.
