In popular tourist destinations such as Jeju and Gangwon, electric rental cars are increasingly adopted. However, sudden battery drain due to weather conditions can pose safety issues. To address this, we developed a battery consumption analysis model that considers resistive energy factors such as acceleration, rolling resistance, and aerodynamic drag. Focusing on the effects of ambient temperature and wind speed, the model's performance was evaluated during an empirical validation period from November to December 2023. Comparing predicted and actual state of charge (SoC) across different routes identified ambient temperature, wind speed, and driving time as major sources of error. The mean absolute error (MAE) increased with lower temperatures due to reduced battery efficiency. Higher wind speeds on routes 1 and 6 resulted in larger errors, indicating the model's limitation in considering only tailwinds for aerodynamic drag calculations. Additionally, longer driving times led to higher actual SoC than predicted, suggesting the need to account for varying driver habits influenced by road conditions. Our model, providing more accurate SoC predictions to prevent battery depletion incidents, shows high potential for application in navigation apps for electric vehicle users in tourist areas. Future research should endeavor to the model by including wind direction, HVAC system usage, and braking frequency to improve prediction accuracy further.

This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charge mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charge mode employs the stair-case shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is specified to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 78A. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.
Along with global environmental issues, the size of the electric vehicle market has recently skyrocketed. Various efforts have been made to extend mileage, one of the biggest problems of the electric vehicles, and development of batteries with high energy densities has led to exponential growth in mileage and performance. However, proper thermal management is essential because these high-performance batteries are affected by continuous heat generation and can cause fires due to thermal runaway phenomena. Therefore, thermal management of the battery is studied through the optimal design of the guide vanes, while utilizing the existing battery casing to ensure the safety of the electric vehicles. A battery from T-company, one of a manufacturer of the electric vehicles, was used for the research, and the commercial CFD software, ANSYS CFX V20.2, was used for analysis. The guide vanes were derived through optimal design based on a genetic algorithm with flow analysis. The optimized guide vanes show improved heat removal performance.
Recently, the global automobile industry is aiming for a transition from internal combustion locomotives to zero-emission vehicles. Electric vehicles powered by battery energy can operate at peak performance and improve fuel economy by applying multiple motors or multi-speed transmissions. In order to design a two-speed transmission, it is necessary to evaluate and analyze the application system and performance of electric vehicles. In this study, control performance optimization of a twostage battery electric vehicle equipped with an AMT-based automatic transmission was performed and performance according to control pattern changes was analyzed. In order to improve the operating efficiency of the motor, the shift control that sets the optimal operating point according to the vehicle speed and required torque was derived from the motor efficiency map. The performance of battery energy consumption and transmission loss energy according to the hysteresis interval was analyzed and optimized. The hysteresis interval applied to the optimal shift map acted as a factor in reducing the frequency and loss of shifts. It has been shown that keeping the hysteresis interval at about 4 km/h can reduce energy consumption while reducing the number of shifts.

Many small vessels such as fishing boats operate in the world's oceans; accordingly, interest in these small vessels' exhaust-gas problem is increasing. Research on the application of electric-propulsion technology has been steadily conducted; however, the subject is limited to research ships or leisure boats, while research on application efficiency remains insufficient. This study attempts to apply lithium-battery electric-propulsion technology to small ships. A gross tonnage of 9.77, a representative fishing boat, is to be redesigned as a fully electrified ship. Without changing the main cabin's dimensions and fuel tanks, the ship's propulsion system is redesigned based on a lithium-battery electric-propulsion system. In addition, the redesigned system is compared with the original sample ship's diesel-propulsion system for application-effect analysis. The results indicate that under controlled sailing conditions, the weight and volume of the electric-propulsion system are 9.5 and 10.5 times those of the diesel-propulsion system, respectively. These values indicate that the system cannot meet fishing boats' high endurance requirements. Therefore, under the existing technical conditions, applying the full lithium-battery electric-propulsion system to solve the problem of high emissions from fishing boats shows limited feasibility.
In this paper, a novel approach for optimized installation and operations of battery energy storage system (BESS) and electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) modules for the renewable energy based intermittent generation is presented for them to be connected with an electric power grid. In order to make use of not merely the high energy density of battery but also the high power density of EDLC modules, it is very useful to devise the hybrid system which combines BESS and EDLC modules. The proposed method adopts the linear programming to calculate the optimized capacity as well as the quadratic programming to transmit the optimal operational signals to BESS and EDLC modules. The efficiency of this methodology will be demonstrated in the experimental study with the real data of wind speed in Texas.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle(PHEV) is a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) with more added battery capacity that can be recharged from the electric power grid. Plug-in battery electric vehicle(PBEV) is a pure electric vehicle that uses only electric motor using electricity from battery that recharged from the power grid. PHEV and PBEV requires recharging of batteries in the vehicles from electric power grid. Recently, PHEVs and PBEV are being developed around the world. It is important to understand how these electric vehicles affect power demands and carbon dioxide emissions. From vehicle customer viewpoint, running energy cost will be imporatnt factor to consider. This paper analyzes the potential impacts of PHEVs and PBEVs on electric power demand, and associated CO2 emissions in 2020 with an projection that the vehicles will be penetrated with 10% market share. Energy costs for the vehicles are also calculated and compared with the conventional combustion vehicle.
The large scaled lead-acid battery is widely used for efficient operation of the photovoltaic system in many islands. However, lithium-ion battery is now being introduced to mitigate the fluctuation of wind power and to replace lead-acid battery. Therefore, hybrid ESS (Energy Storage system) that combines lithium-ion battery with lead-acid battery is being required because lithium-ion battery is costly in present stage. Under this circumstance, this paper presents the optimal algorithm to create composition rate of hybrid ESS by considering fixed and variable costs in order to maximize advantage of each battery. With minimization of total cost including fixed and variable costs, the optimal composition rate can be calculated based on the various scenarios such as load variation, life cycle and cost trend. From simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithms are an effective tool to produce a optimal composition rate.

Global automobile manufacturers are developing electric vehicles (EVs) to eliminate the pollutant emissions from internal combustion vehicles and to minimize fossil fuel consumptions for the future generations. However, EVs have a disadvantage of shorter traveling distance than that of conventional vehicles. To answer this shortfall, more batteries are installed in the EV to satisfy the consumer expectation for the driving range. However, as the energy capacity of the battery mounted in the EV increases, the amount of heat generated by each cell also increases. Naturally, a better battery thermal management system (BTMS) is required to control the temperature of the cells efficiently because the appropriate thermal environment of the cells greatly affects the power output from the battery pack. Typically, the BTMS is divided into an active and a passive system depending on the energy usage of the thermal management system. Heat exchange materials usually include gas and liquid, semiconductor devices and phase change material (PCM). In this study, an application of PCM for a BTMS was investigated to maintain an optimal battery operating temperature range by utilizing characteristics of a PCM, which can accumulate large amounts of latent heat. The system was modeled using Dymola from Dassault Systems, a multi-physics simulation tool. In order to compare the relative performance, the BTMS with the PCM and without the PCM were modeled and the same battery charge/discharge scenarios were simulated. Number of analysis were conducted to compare the battery cooling performance between the model with the aluminum case and PCM and the model with the aluminum case only.
